Sylvester Stallone appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno last night to promote The Expendables 2, and while Stallone put on a brave face, it was clear he was still hurting over the death of his son, Sage, who passed away last month at age 36.

Leno dove right into the uncomfortable topic, asking Stallone if being on a press tour helped take his mind off the awful stuff that was going on in his personal life. “Yeah, when life hits you pretty hard you can go into a dark corner,” he said. “Or you can say, ‘Okay, fine, I’m going to find something to focus on,’ you have your children, your wife, you try and be supportive to other people too, because I know a lot of people go through [losing a child], and they don’t get the attention that I do. And I feel for them, because it’s one club that no one wants to be a member of, that’s for sure. But I think about his memory, he was a lovely boy and I’ll always treasure that.” Watch the clip below.

After that response, Leno moved onto lighter topics for the actor, and Stallone copped to a longtime rivalry with Expendables 2 co-star Arnold Schwarzenegger. He shared that back when the two were “in their prime” they were very competitive. And while the Expendables franchise marks the first time the two action titans worked together on screen, Stallone said that if Hollywood had their way, the two would have done a movie a long time ago where they solved murders. But “these murders were taking place in a girls’ club, so he and I dress up as women. [pause] That’d work,” Stallone said to audience laughs. “I don’t know if you’ve seen me in heels, but it’s not pretty.”
