That was C.K.’s explanation on The Daily Show for the controversy that erupted when he tweeted to Daniel Tosh: “your show makes me laugh every time I watch it. And you have pretty eyes.”
Because of the timing, people read the message as a show of support for Tosh, who came under fire last week after allegedly making a joke about rape. Tosh has since issued an apology. According to C.K., he had no idea the controversy was going on, and he was simply stating that he enjoys the program Tosh.0. Watch the video below.
During his appearance on The Daily Show, C.K. says the problem is that feminists don’t know how to take a joke (which the audience booed him for), and comedians don’t know how to take criticism. Put them together, and you’ve got the Tosh controversy, which doesn’t appear to be going away anytime soon.
Backing up: Last week, comedian Daniel Tosh was performing at a comedy club and he allegedly made a joke that referenced rape. An audience member (by her account) yelled out that it wasn’t funny. Tosh then said, “Wouldn’t it be funny if that girl got raped by like, five guys right now? Like right now? What if a bunch of guys just raped her…” Tosh (after stating that some of her facts were wrong) tweeted an apology, setting off a media firestorm. As Louis C.K. points out, if there are two groups of people who like hyperbole, it’s comedians and bloggers.
C.K. tried to put the whole mess in a better light, saying he wanted people to use it as an opportunity to listen and grow. “It’s positive,” he said. “To me, all dialogue is positive… I think you should listen.”
In the past, C.K. has successfully made jokes about a whole host of horrible things, including a “rape joke” that didn’t result in a huge controversy. You can check out a clip, and note the big difference between his remark and Tosh’s: One made a joke about the absurdity of the situation even being OK, and one (based on one blogger’s account) “joked” about gang raping an individual woman.
