Google unveiled a new tablet during the keynote address of the Google I/O conference today. The tablet is called the Nexus 7, which sounds like an alien spaceship discovered drifting through a spooky nebula by the Enterprise. Coming just one week after Microsoft announced their own tablet, you might be having visions of a three-way war between Microsoft and Apple and Google for supremacy in the tablet market. But the Nexus 7 is quite a bit smaller than the iPad, weighing about half as much. Combine that with starting price of $199, and the Nexus 7 looks more like a missile salvo fired directly at Amazon’s Kindle Fire. (“They’re firing Nexus 7 rockets!” screams Admiral Bezos. “Quick, launch the Kindle Firebomb!”)

The Nexus 7 runs on the new Android 4.1 OS, called Jelly Bean. In one sense, the device is a showcase for Google Play, the company’s content service. If you buy a Nexus 7 soon, you’ll earn $25 in Google Play credit. (You’ll also get a free digital copy of Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Michael Bay’s classic tale of the dehumanizing effects of modern technology and supermodel butts.)

At the keynote, they showed off an intense zombie videogame called Dead Trigger, the second time in under a month that a major multinational corporation has showed off the processing power of their new technology with a game about shooting corpses in the face, which is exactly what the Sumerians were hoping for when they invented civilization.

Anyhow, check out this video, which explains everything about the Nexus 7 in the soft, sensual tones of a lover who wants to show you that there’s so much more to him than just his search engine, baby:

The Nexus 7 is available for pre-order now and will ship to America in mid-July.
