On July 22, adolescents will briefly stop texting in order to celebrate their favorite movies, TV shows, musicians, sports stars, and more at the 14th annual Teen Choice Awards. Who are we kidding — they’ll be texting as they celebrate. The show’s nominee list was revealed today, and it’s filled with exactly what you’d expect: The Hunger Games, vampires, Justin Bieber, and more vampires.
The Hunger Games is going head-to-head with Twilight: The One With the Sex (a.k.a. Breaking Dawn Part I), as well as The Avengers, Mirror Mirror, and Wrath of the Titans in the Choice Movie: Sci-Fi/Fantasy category. Josh Hutcherson and Jennifer Lawrence racked up individual nominations as well, as did the Hunger Games book trilogy. Yes, there’s now a Choice Book award. Other nominees include the Twilight saga, the Divergent series, Nicholas Sparks’ The Lucky One, and…The Giver, which was first published in 1993, before most of today’s teenagers were born.
The Vampire Diaries dominates the TV categories. Ian Somerhalder, Paul Wesley, Nina Dobrev, and Kat Graham are all nominated for Choice TV Actor or Actress, Fantasy/Sci-Fi, and the show itself is competing against Fringe, Supernatural, Once Upon a Time, and fellow vampire soap True Blood for Choice TV Show: Fantasy/Sci-Fi.
But neither of these franchises can hold a candle to Justin Bieber, who snagged five nominations all on his own. He’s up for Choice Male Artist, Single by a Male Artist (for “Boyfriend”), Male Fashion Icon, Male Hottie, and Twit — which is Teen Choice-speak for “Twitter user.” Kids today and their slang, am I right? The Biebs has already taken home eight Teen Choice Awards since 2010 — and because the show gives surfboards to its winners, this means Bieber might soon have enough to open his own beachside shop.
Check out the rest of the nominees at the TCA’s official website. The show will air on Fox July 22 at 8pm ET; set an iPhone alarm so you won’t miss the telecast.
