Look at them! They’re the kings of New York!

Disney’s latest Broadway musical Newsies, which was scheduled to close on August 19, has scored an open-ended run, the company announced today. The current cast is scheduled to stay with the production.

After a wildly successful three-week-only run at New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse in September 2011, Disney brought the stage adaptation of the flop 1992 movie of the same name — which tells the story of the newboys strike of 1899 when paperboys across New York City formed a union to demand fair compensation from publishers William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer —  to Broadway earlier this year, and it opened on March 15 for a limited engagement.

Before the show premiered, Disney extended Newsies‘ run from June to August based on the strength of ticket pre-sales, and now, after eight Tony nominations and sold-out audiences for almost every performance (the show has racked up $8 million in just nine weeks — about three times as much as the movie earned in theaters), Disney has decided not to put an end date on the show.

The announcement is a vindication for the cult classic film, which for 20 years was known as one of Disney’s biggest bombs (before John Carter, of course), and for Disney itself, who recently struggled with big-budget stage versions of The Little Mermaid (in 2008) and Tarzan (in 2006).

You know, Jack Kelly and his fellow papes always did say, “The world will know that we’ve been here!” Well, look around, boys. It appears that they officially do!
