One of Edvard Munch’s four copies of The Scream was auctioned off in New York City tonight, but I’m guessing you didn’t have the record $119.9 million The Associated Press reported it fetched — unless you won the mega millions a few weeks ago.
But that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the artist’s talents. In fact, you probably already have — as the image has left its mark on the pop culture landscape. The influence of Munch’s famous painting can be seen in everything from movies to television and even advertising.
The most obvious pop culture tie is to Scream‘s Ghostface killer. (Not to be confused with Wu-Tang Clan’s Ghostface Killah.) The Halloween mask used in the quadrilogy was specifically based on Munch’s work — and is almost as iconic now as the original.
On the opposite end of the movie spectrum is Home Alone and its poster, which borrowed heavily from Munch. Macauley Culkin’s own perpetual scream is practically a copy of the pose Munch painted. Did the artist’s model use too much aftershave himself? We’ll never know.
And in the sixth season of Doctor Who, the show’s creators modeled their aliens — ironically called The Silence — after The Scream, according to BBC news.
As if that weren’t enough, the painting’s landscape and subject were used in a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire commercial. We bet Munch would be so proud.
Even though $80 million is a little out of our price range, thanks to the ubiquitous nature of Munch’s painting, we’re all art connoisseurs.
