Jason Reitman’s popular series of live performances of beloved screenplays is coming to New York City later this month. After staging The Breakfast Club, The Apartment, The Princess Bride, Shampoo, The Big Lebowski, and Reservoir Dogs with all-star casts, Reitman is planning to host a reading of The Apartment in Manhattan on April 27. According to the New York Times, Reitman will use a different cast than he did in the original Apartment reading — where Steve Carell played the Jack Lemmon part and Natalie Portman filled in for Shirley MacLaine — so feel free to start throwing out your best guesses about which NYC-centric actors will make the cut. (There’s gotta be a part for Chris Messina somewhere in there, right?)
The Apartment was written by Billy Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond, back in the days when screenplays featured dialogue and not just endless exposition about superpowers and space magic. I’m holding out hope that Reitman will eventually find his way to restaging another Wilder/Diamond joint: The fast-paced Cold War comedy One, Two, Three. Michael Fassbender could play Horst Buchholz!
