On the Scene at the GLAAD Media Awards: We were THIS close to seeing John Stamos and Cory Monteith kiss

Laughs, tears, high-kicks, and John Stamos: The Oscars should look to last night’s snappy GLAAD Media Awards in New York City to energize their own ceremony. A whole lot of high heels, patent leather, and sequins packed into the Marriott Marquis in Times Square to honor the people and projects that put forth “the most outstanding images of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community in the media” (see a full list of winners here).

Although┬áthe most tweeted moment of Saturday night’s ceremony was certainly Full House and Broadway star John Stamos bidding thousands of dollars to kiss Glee star Cory Monteith (more on that later), it’s hard to single out one moment as the most memorable. Twenty-year-old Zach Wahls, whose impassioned testimony about growing up with two moms went viral last year on YouTube, gave another rousing speech that was worthy of another 17 million views. Producer Harvey Weinstein and 17-year-old advocate Katy Butler took to the stage to talk about Bully, the documentary that has set off heated debate about MPAA ratings. “God must work in mysterious ways to have somebody like me distribute this movie,” Weinstein joked about his reputation in the movie industry. Tracey Gold addressed her former Growing Pains co-star Kirk Cameron’s recent remarks that homosexuality is “destructive,” saying “Kirk spoke his mind, but I want my voice of love and support to be louder.” And the most teary moment of the night came when ABC journalist Josh Elliott reminded everyone to “remember Jamey Rodemeyer,” the gay teen who committed suicide last September after years of bullying.

But yes, there were the smooches. Glee star Naya Rivera heated things up by auctioning off her “sweet lady kisses” and betting Monteith that her lips could bring in more cash for GLAAD. The competition was on, and just as it looked like Rivera had it in the bag, John Stamos bid thousands to kiss Monteith, eliciting delighted roars from the audience. But in the interest of raising as much money as possible, Stamos instead decided to auction off a kiss of his own. At $5,000 a piece, Rivera smooched a big fan, Monteith planted one on Smash star Megan Hilty — and Stamos gave a handsome man named Valentino his money’s worth. I still want to see that Stamos-Monteith kiss, but I have a feeling it won’t happen on Glee any time soon.

A high-kicking performance from the Rockettes capped off a night full of strange but fabulous sights, such as Jersey Shore star Vinny Guadagnino at the GLAAD cocktail party, or the lovely Dakota Fanning posing for a photo with two enormous drag queens, and washing hands next to Carson Kressley and Padma Lakshmi in the “gender neutral” bathrooms. Only at the GLAAD awards.
