‘Angry Birds Space’ blasts off today. What do the reviews say?

Angry Birds Space, the highly anticipated (by me, at least) third sequel to the massively popular, excruciatingly addicting, relationship-ruining Angry Birds franchise, launches into orbit today on iOS, Android, PC, and Mac.

The fourth iteration of the Birds’ vengeful odyssey against a clan of douchebag pigs sends the feathered heroes through a black hole and into the final frontier: zero-gravity space. Check out the expositional trailer below:

EW has played the game, and we’re optimistic. The new game system, with all its gravitational madness, asteroid maneuvering, and inventive new bird abilities, is just as much of a good time as you’d expect, and certainly well worth the asking price (considering that gamers used to shell out $50 a pop for N64 cartridges back in the day, the 99-cent ticket price is nothing to balk at). At press time, the game has a 5-star average on the Mac App Store, and here’s what some other early reviewers from Internetland say:

CNET, Lance Whitney: “Like other editions of Angry Birds, the new game is definitely addictive. Caught up in playing it I had to keep reminding myself to write this story. And the nod to space physics adds a fun and ‘realistic’ angle.”

Android Authority, Sam Cater: “I’ve been playing Angry Birds Space for about an hour now, and I am thoroughly impressed. In fact I think this is the best version of Angry Birds that Rovio has ever released.”

Pocket Gamer, Harry Slater: “Angry Birds Space is a worthy addition to Rovio’s ever-expanding empire. It’s not revolutionary — its biggest ideas are borrowed from some of the first games ever made — but it manages to recapture the destructive thrill that made the original so essential, while neatly avoiding the trap of repetition.”

PopWatchers, what do you make of this new space adventure for the franchise? Do you plan to upgrade your Birds to the intergalactic edition?
