It’s March 14, also known as 3/14, also known as Pi Day. To some, it’s the most wonderful day of the year, when math geeks and science nerds alike can join together in mathematical harmony to celebrate the majestic wonders of this baffling number. While this writer can proudly admit that she has memorized 72 digits of pi (it was for a seventh-grade math project, sheesh), it’s far more entertaining to reach into the depths of our pop culture-ingrained minds and discover ways this elusive, irrational number has riddled itself into our entertainment-based society. A few highlights below.
Marry the smoldering, illustrious look of Robert Pattinson in a candlelit restaurant with reciting the square root of pi, and I just about fall out of my chair.
2. The Simpsons
What’s the fastest way to get a group of babbling scientists’ attention? Shout “Pi is exactly three!” How dare you!
3. Life of Pi
Yann Martel’s award-winning novel didn’t have much to do with the number, but did suspiciously boast three parts and 100 chapters. With Tobey Maguire and Gérard Depardieu slated to star in director Ang Lee’s adaptation, might we expect more veiled references?
There are also pi pop-ups in Darren Aronofsky’s breakthrough indie Pi, Kate Bush’s song “Pi,” and Sandra Bullock tech thriller The Net, all of which my colleague Adam Markovitz has referenced before. There’s a big heaping of pi pop culture to get you started, PiWatchers, but other bites are you taking? Enlighten us in the comments below!
