If you missed the cutest three hours on primetime last night, there’s a new top dog: Malachy the Pekingese, Best in Show at the 2012 Westminster Dog Show. The first night of the doggy showdown featured the Hound, Toy, Non-Sporting and Herding groups. Last night featured the Sporting, Working, and Terrier groups. Malachy competed in the Best in Show group last year but lost to Hickory the Scottish Deerhound. But the Pekingese rose to the occasion this year, making him the first Pekingese to take the title since 1990.
It’s not the 4-year-old Malachy’s first time in the spotlight. In fact, this is the 11-pound champ’s 115th best in show title. No wonder he seemed to bask in the cheers of his doting fans at Madison Square Garden. We were secretly hoping he’d whip his hair as he bobbled away with the title. Maybe next year.
Malachy beat out more than 2,000 dogs from 185 breeds who were entered overall this year, including Ian the Dalmatian, Emily the Irish Setter, Cinders the Wirehaired Dachshund, Fifi the Doberman, Capi the German Shepherd, and Chelsey the Kerry Blue.
So what did the happy-go-lucky Pekingese take home? A prized silver bowl. Yearlong bragging rights and breeding potential are just an added perks.
What did you think of show, PopWatchers? Were you hoping adorably furry Malachy would whip his hair in victory too? Were you rooting for one of his canine rivals?
