Tom Brady of the New England Patriots has won three Super Bowls. He’s been named the NFL’s Most Valuable Player two times. He’s handsome. He’s 6’4″. He’s hosted Saturday Night Live. He can wear his hair any way he wants. Between his salary with the Pats and his endorsements, he earned about $30 million last year. Also, he’s married to super supermodel Gisele Bundchen. You might think a guy like this doesn’t need your prayers, but you would be wrong. Bundchen reportedly emailed her close friends and family, asking them to pray for Tom when they hit their knees at night. “My sweet friends and family,” the e-mail began, according to the New York Post. “This sunday will be a really important day in my husband’s life. He and his team worked so hard to get to this point and now they need us more than ever to send them positive energy so they can fulfill their dream of winning this super bowl … So I kindly ask all of you to join me on this positive chain and pray for him, so he can feel confident, healthy and strong. Envision him happy and fulfilled experiencing with his team a victory this sunday. Thank you for your love and support. Love, G ”
To be fair, Bundchen has more than her husband’s happiness at stake. Brady won two Super Bowls while dating actress Bridget Moynahan, but the trophy case has been sealed shut since Bundchen started dating the star quarterback in 2008. It would be totally irrational to conclude that Bundchen has been some sort of jinx — but football fans don’t tend to be rational. She had only recently started dating Brady in early 2007 when the Patriots’ squandered a 21-6 halftime lead to the Colts in the AFC title game. The next year, New England’s undefeated season was shattered by the New York Giants in the Super Bowl. (I’m just saying!) If the Patriots lose again, Bundchen might not be so popular among the face-painters in the parking lots of Gillette Stadium.
Full disclosure, I’m not going to pray for Tom or Gisele. I think they’re going to be okay, win or lose. Instead, I’m going to pray for Drew Henson, as I always do this time of year.
