Shira Lazar of 'What's Trending': Can social media predict the Oscar winners?

SHIRA-LAZAR

For the past few years, social media has become the watercooler for online chatter surrounding any big televised event, and awards season is no exception. Every show has its own hashtag, winner trend, and surprise on-air moments that get shared and go viral more quickly then ever before. But can online chatter reveal who the winners may be?

The Meltwater Group, which measured online buzz last year, predicted two of three big Academy Award wins: The King’s Speech, which won Best Picture, had the most Twitter mentions, as did Best Actress Natalie Portman. James Franco, however, who seemed to win in terms of Web engagement, lost to Colin Firth for Best Actor.

This year,  social media channels lit up following nominations, causing the Oscar’s online buzz to peak.  According to Simply Measured, a company that provides social media analytic and measured the hashtag #oscar and #oscars, Best Picture nominee Hugo and first-time Best Leading Actor nominee Gary Oldman had some of the most social chatter, followed by Demian Bichir of the indie A Better Life and megastar Moneyball nominee Brad Pitt, who came in a surprising third.  A ton of celebs took to Twitter to congratulate the Bridesmaids family on their noms, including The Artist‘s Missi Pyle. Jenny McCarthy tweeted congratulations at her cousin Melissa McCarthy for her Bridesmaids Best Supporting Actress nom, as did the hit comedy’s director, Paul Feig.

Since then, with the SAG Awards and Producers Guild Awards pushing certain films and stars into the spotlight, we’re seeing The Help having the most mentions on Twitter, followed by Hugo and The Artist.
