Just when you thought he was out, Stephen Colbert pulled him right back in. Former presidential candidate Herman Cain, who suspended his campaign last month following the “continued distractions” and “continued hurt” from the various sexual harassment allegations he faced, is back in it, thanks to Colbert.
During Monday night’s installment of The Colbert Report, the South Carolina native, who announced last week that he was transferring his Super PAC powers to Jon Stewart in order to possibly run in the Republican presidential primary in his home state, had some distressing news to the members of the Colbert nation. Because there are no write-ins on South Carolina ballots, the Colbert Report host, who is exploring the race two and a half months in, won’t be able to get any votes.
Of course, when opportunity p’zones knock, Colbert will answer the door and eat it. (Ben Wyatt would be so proud.) Colbert, who has already run a killer campaign against GOP front-runner Mitt Romney, urged that voters choose Cain in the South Carolina primaries. (While Cain is technically out of the race, he is still on the ballot.) He explained, “Because Cain and I are so similar, I think that if this Saturday Herman Cain were to get a significant number of votes, that would be a sign that voters are hungry for a Stephen Colbert campaign.” (Well, that and pizza.)
“Anyone who shares my values can show it by voting for Herman Cain,” Colbert told his fans in South Carolina and across the country, adding, “Independents, Democrats, college kids, viewers of my show, people who attended rally, my Twitter followers, my good friends on Reddit. Young people of the Internet, stand up and shout! Because you are legally eligible to go down to the polls and tell the world how much you love Herman Cain.” Watch his call to Raise Cain here:
What do you think of Stephen Colbert’s call to have South Carolina voters vote for Herman Cain as a means to really vote for him? Are his campaign strategies proving to be more effective than most candidates on the ballot? Share in the comments section below.
