Party Down fans are, well, partying down today after learning the news that they’d been hoping to hear since the show was canceled in June 2010: A movie is happening.
Sure, you might have heard this in some form before — or at least hints about it. But frankly, I don’t believe anything until Megan Mullally confirms it’s true. Luckily, that’s exactly what she did yesterday during the Television Critics Association press tour in Los Angeles.
Ken Marino told us in August that the movie was moving in the “right direction” but that nothing was “a go.” Looks like a few things have changed since then. This is where the work begins, people. The work of fantasizing about the amazing things that could transpire when you take a show like Party Down and expand the hijinks to roughly 100 minutes.
But where to begin?
Here’s how it goes down in my mind. We begin with Constance, still swimming in cash after the death of Howard, and she is seen literally swimming in cash. (It’s just a kiddie pool; she doesn’t want to be too showy.) While doing so, she gets a ring on her cell — it’s her old friend Ron calling. We cut to Ron, who’s standing in front of a crowded Soup ‘R Crackers: South Central. Oh my God, he did it (again)! He opened Soup ‘R Crackers, but this time with great success! As we pan out, we see the place is packed — there’s even a line. Good for him, we think. But wait… He’s in line. Just then, as he exchanges pleasantries with Constance, Kevin Hart and Fatso-Fasano walk past the line of people and get into their car, which is parked in the space labeled “Owners.” Ron cringes in silent rage, before cutting off Constance, who’s gone off on a tangent. “Look, Constance, I’m glad to hear you’re doing well. But I’m actually calling for a favor…”
Take it from there, PopWatchers. Or, start your own opener. Also, tell me what else you’re hoping to see from the movie. (No. 1 on my wish list? A cameo from Mullally’s better half, Nick Offerman!)
Ready, set, party…
