NBC’s Dateline last night featured Jennifer Hudson in an emotional, tearful interview that touched on everything from her Dreamgirls Oscar triumph to the tragic murders of her mother, brother, and nephew in 2008.

She still declines to talk much about her darkest days (“I just feel like certain things should be off limits and people should respect that,” she told interviewer Lester Holt.) But Hudson, who is promoting her new memoir, I Got This, was remarkably frank about the body image issues that she says have plagued her since she got into showbiz as an American Idol contestant in 2004.

The singer and Weight Watchers spokeswoman says she was shocked to see a digitally slimmed-down version of herself on the cover of her 2008 self-titled album. “It’s like, where’s the rest of me? They Photoshopped me probably to the size I am now on that cover, when we all know I was nowhere near that. Why would you Photoshop that?” she told Holt. “To me, it did not send out a good message. And it did not represent me well. Did I not just prove that talent is enough if I made it this far? Being who I am, being the size that I am?”
