Kris Jenner really loved her friends in 1985

It appears that self-promotion is nothing new for our favorite Kardashian matriarch, Kris Jenner, as a video has surfaced that shows her cruising around L.A. in the 80s, singing about her friends for her 30th birthday to the tune of Randy Newman’s I Love LA. The video was posted to YouTube in August, but is gaining some traction in a slow news week. Check out the video after the jump and add some vintage Kardashian (and even O.J. Simpson!) to your holiday.

TNT's NBA montage: What a stocking stuffer!

Filed under: TV and tagged:

Unlike many of you, I didn’t catch the NBA’s return on Christmas Day yesterday. But I wish I had after perusing Facebook today. Many of my friends posted the stirring video montage (embedded after the jump) on TNT that opened the season after a five-month lockout. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen Carmelo Anthony, Tim Duncan, and Dirk Nowitzki on the court, but even longer since we’ve laid eyes on Charles Barkley, Bill Walton, and Larry Bird with the ball. Thanks to some nifty video tricks, TNT offered us footage of all these greats — and more from the past and present — playing alongside one another. Nice to see that whatever strife happens behind the scenes, on the court the NBA still offers plenty of stars and stories worth following. Whether or not you enjoy basketball, you have to admit: This is good TV.

Spot Inspection: What TV show are you self-marathoning?

If you’ve been on Twitter in the last week, odds are your feed had multiple people tweeting about the TV shows they were self-marathoning. With repeats filling the current TV schedule, vacation days to burn, and a need for a break from relatives, it seems an ideal time to catch up on shows you missed or revisit ones you loved. Because we forecast this trend to continue through Jan. 2, let’s just get go ahead and get it all out here, folks. Spot Inspection: What TV show are you marathoning?

I know I wasn’t the only one hitting Friday Night Lights last week. (Thank you, Netflix.) After seeing back-to-back Taylor Kitsch trailers for John Carter and Battleship in theaters, I decided I needed to properly mourn the cutting of Kitsch’s hair for the latter. I also needed to come to terms with the fact that the FNL character I most resembled in high school was not a leading lady but Julie’s friend Lois, the one who, after Julie recounts how Kitsch’s Tim Riggins shielded her during a tornado in season 2, asks, “Tim Riggins was, like, holding you? … What does he smell like?”*

Your turn.

Daniel Craig will not bond with 's—head' politicians

Don’t you find it annoying when celebrities become entrenched in the political scene? (We read your comments, so we know that answer is “yes.”) You’re not alone. James Bond himself is saying (Dr.) No to getting involved with politics. In an interview with Men’s Journal, Daniel Craig says he gets uncomfortable when political figures attempt to court him and other buzz-worthy celebrities. “Tony Blair started it much more than anybody’s ever done. ‘Go and have tea at 10 Downing Street’ … It becomes Mephisto.” (Craig is referring to a 1981 film about an actor who becomes involved with the Nazis in order to bag a role.) 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo': Lots of hype, but weak box office. What gives?

Girl-Dragon-Tattoo

I thought seeing The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo on Christmas Day, on the West side of Los Angeles (home to many holiday movie enthusiasts), would be similar to my previous holiday movie-going experiences. I thought it would be like the time I tried to see Avatar (sold out) or The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (sold out) and ended up in the theater for some unmemorable indie flick of the moment. But no: This year, I was able to get tickets to the much-anticipated David Fincher adaptation. And, as it turns out, there were plenty more available.

According to box office reports, the film came in fourth this weekend, behind MI:4, Sherlock Holmes and (ouch!) Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked – a movie that EW.com reviewer Adam Markovitz called “nothing more than a cynical stab at grabbing kids’ attention.” So with all the rave reviews and the buzz behind Tattoo, why didn’t more people see it this weekend? One of the finest compliments you can give any fourth film in a franchise is that it made you want to go back and watch the first three movies again. That’s what I was thinking as I left Brad Bird’s Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol (along with how lucky Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt was to forget to ditch his goggles while changing into his suit). Is M:I 4 officially the best of the franchise? We take it to a vote below.  READ FULL STORY »

PopWatch Confessional: What's the most ridiculous gift you received for Christmas this year?

Christmas-Story-bunny

Aside from the off-chance you received a gift as (intentionally) awful as the ones these poor kids did on account of one unseasonably cruel Jimmy Kimmel, there was bound to be at least one ridiculous present that wound up under your tree this year. (Unless, of course, you somehow know perfect gift-giver Leslie Knope.) READ FULL STORY »

Kid rock star Dan Zanes on his favorite Christmas music

Chances are if you’re a kid or have a kid or know a kid, you love Dan Zanes. And quite possibly,  if you’re reading this right now, you’re hanging out on Christmas Day trying to figure out what kind of holiday music to listen to that’s not on a lame loop at your local mall’s Crate and Barrel. Well, Dan Zanes can help. And considering he just released a new album of holiday music,  Christmas in Concord, the Grammy-winning musician knows what he’s talking about. “There’s a lot out there because it used to be part of the deal when you were a singer,” says Zanes. “I really like Christmas music. And a lot of them are really good songs, but they just don’t sound the same in July.” Here’s his advice on how to capitalize on your one day when you can justify morning-until-night Christmas songs:

1. “My favorite Christmas record is the Bob Dylan Christmas record [Christmas in the Heart]. I think it’s incredible. I think his singing is so good, the arrangements are so great. It’s a real celebration of Christmas and that’s part of why I decided to make Christmas music. I was inspired by the fresh sound.”

2. “Joan Osborne’s [Christmas Means Love] is really nice if you want a contemporary record. But I like it because she’s keeping tradition alive.”

3. “The Christmas music that came out of Memphis, in the ’60s when the R&B people did it, I love. Aretha Franklin did some really nice stuff.”

4. “You could check out the Louvin Brothers, who were precursors to the Everly Brothers.”

5. “It hasn’t happened yet, but the person I would really like to hear do a Christmas record would be Asa. I think she could do a really nice one.”

What do you say PopWatchers? Do you agree with Dan Zanes’ picks? What are your favorite songs to listen to today?

Demi Lovato gets Disney to remove eating disorder joke

Former Disney star Demi Lovato took on Disney by Twitter and…she won. According to a report, Lovato, who went to rehab last year for bulimia, was angered that a character on the Disney Channel’s Shake It Up said, “I could eat you up, well, if I ate.”

“I find it really funny how a company can lose one of their actress’ from the pressures of an EATING DISORDER and yet still make joke about that very disease. #nice,” the former Sonny with a Chancestar tweeted. She continued later with, “And is it just me or are the actress’ [on Disney Channel] getting THINNER AND THINNER…. I miss the days of RAVEN, and LIZZIE MCGUIRE,” and then ”Dear Disney Channel, EATING DISORDERS ARE NOT SOMETHING TO JOKE ABOUT.”

Clearly, the Disney Channel is following Lovato’s feed because they pulled the episode and tweeted back, ”@ddlovato – we hear you & are pulling both episodes as quickly as possible & reevaluating them.”

What do you all think? Is Demi Lovato kind of your new hero?

Mel Gibson officially divorced

The marriage between Mel Gibson (named in the court papers as Mel Colm-Cille Gerard Gibson) and his wife of 30 years, Robyn, officially ended today. Though the court papers state that the settlement is “a confidential stipulation for judgment,” it has been widely reported that Robyn is walking away with half of Gibson’s fortune, that could be as high as $850 million. Robyn has custody of the couple’s still-minor child, Thomas Rufus Gerard Gibson, 12.
