Taylor Swift gets great bangs, begging the question, which stars actually pull them off?

We here at EW have some pretty strong opinions about bangs. In fact, infuriatingly bad bangs on an otherwise beautiful actress can ruin a perfectly good movie or television show for us. (My personal vote goes to Courteney Cox in Scream 3, whose short, choppy bangs made the horror flick just about unwatchable. Well that, and the movie is terrible.)

Still, we’re not opposed to the idea of bangs as a whole. In fact, we welcome it. (Please reserve all “That’s what she said”s for the comments section below, PopWatchers.) So imagine our delight when Taylor Swift opted to go back to having bangs (she pulled them off way back in 2009) and tweeted a photo of her new locks (see above) and cut straight to the point, “Got a haircut.” READ FULL STORY »

Britney Spears turns 30 today, a milestone birthday for a star who's had plenty of milestones

It’s a little hard to comprehend that Britney Spears is 30 years old today, isn’t it? Not just in the sense that, if Spears is getting older then that also means that the TRL-voting generation that grew up with her is as well, but the realization that she’s only 30 years old. That’s no slight at the pop superstar, who looks better than ever, nor is it disregarding that this is a milestone birthday for her. It’s just that at only 30, this is someone who’s already lived what seems like five lifetimes.

For better or worse, Spears became the unofficial poster girl for just how turbulent one’s 20s can be. By 25 alone, an age when most people are still steeped in college loans, starting a first job, or living an apartment with roughly six other city-dwelling hopefuls, she’d already been married (twice), had two kids with Kevin Federline, found Kabbalah, and remained one of the biggest musical acts in the world. You can say a lot about Spears, but to ever imply that her 20s were uneventful is absolutely not one of them.

In fact, here’s just some of the things Britney Spears went through in her 20s, in no particular order, from the highs to the lows and everything in between: READ FULL STORY »

'How I Met Your Mother's Josh Radnor on his new role as a musical star

It’s been a song-filled year for the guys of How I Met Your Mother. Music man Neil Patrick Harris starred in Stephen Sondheim’s Company. Jason Segel stretched his pipes in The Muppets. Now Josh Radnor is leading a one-night only benefit reading of the romantic musical comedy She Loves Me at Roundabout’s Stephen Sondheim Theatre on Dec. 5. His co-stars include Tony winner Jane Krakowski, Tony nominee Victor Garber, and a 15-member orchestra — not bad for a guy whose previous singing experience was basically crooning for laughs on TV. Since we already know that he’s a skilled romantic comedian from HIMYM, Radnor recently took some time from rehearsals to tell to EW what to expect from his Broadway-style belting.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Your How I Met Your Mother costars have been doing a lot of singing this year.
JOSH RADNOR: [Laughing] What is this? Are you trying to get me more nervous?

No! Do you feel pressure?
Um, yeah. READ FULL STORY »

'The X Factor' on the scene: Simon doesn't know what's happening, but he knows he doesn't like it

“Does it get louder than this?” asked the woman sitting a few seats down from me at The X Factor, after one of the CBS pages asked her if she wanted earplugs before the show. At that point, the pre-show dance mega-mix was pumping through the Xanadome at a volume usually reserved for jet engines or Mary Murphy, but I quickly answered for the page. “Yes. Oh yes. It does.”

I thought about the health of that woman’s eardrums while Drew was singing her save-me song while the Xanadome, as it had been instructed to all night, erupted in a deafening torrent of cheering and cat-calls. READ FULL STORY »

Mena Suvari really loves America

Filed under: TV and tagged: ,
FIRST-LOOK-SUVARI

I love America. July Fourth, freedom, apple pie, all those things. But (speaking of pie), I clearly don’t love America as much as Mena Suvari. As a friend of mine on Facebook astutely pointed out today, her guest appearance as the Black Dahlia on American Horror Story last night brings the grand total of “American” entries on her resume to six: American Pie, American BeautyAmerican Virgin, American Pie 2, American Horror Story, and American Reunion.

That is a lot of red, white, and blue. But oddly, that list isn’t enough to top her American Pie co-star Eugene Levy’s “American” hits (opting in to all the American Pie franchise movies bumped him up a few U.S. of A’s).

Then again, Levy has about 30 years on Suvari, so there’s time for her. Wet Hot American Summer sequel, anyone?

BabyCenter has released its annual lists of the Top 100 baby names of the year for girls and boys. Check them out here, and marvel at how unique the most popular names actually sound to someone who remembers when Jennifer was No. 1. Twilight moms appear to be losing their love of Isabella, which has now dropped to No. 3, below Sophia and Emma. (Isabella was No. 2 last year, and No. 1 in 2009.) But the good news, the more casual Bella is definitely on the rise: It was No. 67 in 2009, No. 49 in 2010, and No. 26 in 2011.

On the boys’ side, Jacob is at No. 5, while Edward is nowhere on the list. The wolf wins at something! Aiden remains the No. 1 boys’ name, for the seventh year in a row.

'Vampire Diaries' CWingo game: What should really be in the squares?

We love a good round of Bingo here at PopWatch — see: our ‘Five-0′ Bingo card – which is why we’re up for CWingo, the online Bingo game The CW launches tonight for fans of The Vampire Diaries to play while watching a repeat episode live. (Watch a demo. They’ll do it for new episodes in 2012, too.) But looking at the sample CWingo card pictured, we worry some vital squares may be missing. If you were asked to design this card for any given episode, what would be in the squares? A few suggestions to get you thinking:

• V-neck T-shirt

• Damon or Stefan says “Brother”

• Town event. I miss Gilmore Girls.

• Damon in shower

• Bad stake aim

Go!
