'Real Housewives of Beverly Hills': When agony overtakes ecstasy

real-housewives-bh-kim

Yesterday was a rough day for the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. Swift on the heels of reports that cast member Kim Richards had checked herself in to rehab, Bravo aired a gut punch of an episode that showed yet another emotional breakdown from Taylor Armstrong, who admitted on last night’s Watch What Happens Live that her life was “unraveling.” It’s not the first time issues of abuse, be they substance or physical, have been addressed any number of reality shows from The Anna Nicole Show to Jersey Shore, but what is it about this season of Beverly Hills that is so much more uncomfortable than those other shows? Queen Elizabeth II is feeling the crunch of the British recession. According to ABC News, she and the crown will have to make do with only $50 million of the tax-payers’ money per year — approximately half the family’s take pre-economic downturn. In fact, the royals are renting out St. James palace to corporate bigwigs during next summer’s Olympics to raise funds, and there are even reports that the Queen would welcome some help in paying her high utility bills.

Fortunately, there are loyal subjects who are willing to contribute more than their share during these difficult times. Take Helen Mirren, for example, who won an Oscar for portraying Her Majesty in The Queen. The sexy 66-year-old actress is auctioning off the famous red bikini that reminded so many of the icon’s timeless bodaciousness to raise money for the needy. “It happens to be one of the best bikinis in the world because it fits!,” Mirren told a British morning show. “The minute I bought it I loved it because it’s so hard to find a bikini that fits if you’ve got bosoms like I have.”

Pause. Breathe. Recover.

“I would love it to raise money for an organisation that I support called Age UK,” she continued. “I love the idea of this little flimsy summer thing is going towards helping old people stay warm and comfortable and toasty in the wintertime.”

One queen forced to pinch pennies at Christmas time; the other, baring sharing her god-given gifts in generosity. O. Henry himself would weep!

In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to have a memory and attention span of a goldfish. (Goldfish?! I love those fishes ’cause they’re so delicious! Wait, focus, Kate. See what I mean?) So, every year, I look forward to various year-end lists (like EW’s own 2011 round-up… stay tuned!) that help me remember the big stories over the past 12 months that too quickly went out of sight and out of mind. It’s no surprise, then, that I’m enjoying Twitter’s list of top hot topics in 2011. Especially since it reveals quite a few surprises.

Among them? When it comes to TV-focused hot topics, Pretty Little Liars (No. 1) ranked higher than Two and a Half Men (No. 2), the CBS sitcom in the center of what might be the biggest entertainment story of 2011. READ FULL STORY »

Fake Kristen Stewart explains the true spirit of Christmas

Remember how after seeing Breaking Dawn — Part I for the fourth time during its opening weekend, you turned to your BFF and said that Bella’s baby is just like Jesus?

No? Well, doesn’t really matter. This video from Barely Political is still funny. Actress Laura McDonald is a convincing Kristen Stewart/Bella, with exaggerated imitations of the actress’s affectations. “One thing [eye flutter] I know about… [swallow] women who are pregnant is [hair touch] they’re like they rub their stomachs constantly,” says the fake K-Stew. “I know that because that’s how I played Bella. Like, you just rub your stomach and then you give this freaked-out look, like… [silent gasp].”

Watch this misinformational video about the true story of Christmas, with the three wise pilgrims, the angel-pimp, and the miracle of St. Nick. READ FULL STORY »

Lionsgate vice chairman Michael Burns talks 'Hunger Games', rumored Summit merger -- VIDEO

Filed under: Movies and tagged:

Lionsgate vice chairman Michael Burns may not have brought Jon Hamm along for his visit to CNBC’s Squawk Box (much to the dismay of a Squawk Box anchor), but he did bring up plenty about his movie studio, including their rumored merger with Summit, as well as the biggest project on their slate, The Hunger Games. (However, for good measure, Burns did bring along a coveted Mockingjay pin.) READ FULL STORY »

See Kristin Chenoweth defying gravity at the American Country Awards

Kristin Chenoweth arrived on the red carpet of last night’s 2011 American Country Awards to prove that, despite being a television and Broadway star, she was going to be the cohostess with the mostest. Talent, that is! Not that country fans needed much convincing, as the singer-actress made two things very apparent from the get-go: She’s a little bit country and a little bit rock & roll. See the photo of Chenoweth, in a stunning emerald chiffon dress, that seemed to have everyone asking the same question around the Internet today, “I thought Pushing Daisies got canceled?”

Chewbacca on the set of 'Glee.' There are things more disturbing than a lack of faith.

When you look at this picture — tweeted by Glee star Chris Colfer from the set of the show’s Christmas episode –  do you feel a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices were suddenly crying out in terror, only to be suddenly silenced? It’s kind of like seeing two beloved franchises hug each other so hard that they accidentally wind up smothering each other. Hey, it’s the holiday season, so we should keep an open mind. Speaking of, a special gift: Some actual footage from the last time Wookies celebrated the holiday season on television. Happy Life Day, everyone! READ FULL STORY »

Herman Cain will be missed by Jon Stewart -- VIDEO

As we predicted, no one is more sorry to see Herman Cain suspend his presidential campaign than Jon Stewart, who, as the host of The Daily Show, didn’t see Cain as a candidate, but as a steak. ”Who does that?” Stewart said, gleefully, after showing a clip of Herman rolling up in his bus after he was already introduced for his speech. “See that is the beauty of Herman Cain. You don’t know if they planned this, or if he was late. ‘Oh s—, they just said my name. Gas it!’” The clip below also includes a montage of the Daily Show writers’ reactions to losing their muse, and Stewart’s take on Cain bowing out by using the “greatest nine words ever spoken by an American politician”: “I believe these words came from the Pokémon movie.” He also suggests other quotes from the Pokémon movie that would have been more inspirational and fitting. Not to be missed.  READ FULL STORY »

Celebs fight a good fight with Trevor Live: Red-carpet photos from the star-studded event

Typically an assortment of so many A-list stars in one place can only mean one thing in Hollywood: an awards ceremony. (That, or Garry Marshall just made another ensemble comedy about a holiday nobody likes.) And while an award was given out at Trevor Live (to none other than Lady Gaga) over the weekend at the Hollywood Palladium, celebrities convened for a much greater cause: to raise money and awareness for The Trevor Project an organization that provides “crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning youth.” Just a few names in attendance: Amy Poehler, Neil Patrick Harris, Queen Latifah, Zachary Quinto, and Amber Heard.

EW was on the scene for the star-studded fund-raiser and caught up with a few of the celebrities on hand on the red carpet. Check out the photos, as well as what some stars, like Darren Criss, Kris Allen, and event guest-director Adam Shankman, had to say about the night: READ FULL STORY »
