Old Spice remains most viral brand, but Volkswagen uses 'The Force' to rise to second

Visible Measures and Ad Age have released their annual list of the Top 10 most viral brands, and once again, Old Spice tops it. Credit is largely due to Fabio, star of the ”New Old Spice Guy Fabio” campaign. Let that sink in. Volkswagen, which didn’t even make the list last year, was No. 2 with a bullet, thanks to “The Force,” the memorable Super Bowl spot that featured 6-year-old Max Page as the aspiring Darth Vader. What’s great about that one: It’s guilt-free viewing, it’s entertaining even if you have no intention of buying a new car, and it never gets old. Watch it again below. It’s still perfection. It helped lead Volkswagen’s videos to roughly 85 million views online in all — about 10 million fewer than Old Spice.  READ FULL STORY »

Batman taken prisoner by Bane? That’s what happens in The Dark Knight Rises, according to a story in the Los Angeles Times, which sent a reporter to the movie’s set last summer to chat with Anne Hathaway. The scene reportedly takes place while Gotham is under siege (does that city ever get a break?), as Bane’s goons drag a hooded Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) in front of a crowd — only to be interrupted by a stiletto-ed Selina Kyle (a.k.a. Catwoman, played by Hathaway). That’s all the detail we get from the story, but it’s plenty to chew over: Will Bane (Tom Hardy) be another Joker-style terrorist, or will he have a more specific motive? Is Catwoman on his side or Batman’s? READ FULL STORY »

Last-minute donations: where the stars are giving this season

We know everyone gets tired of hearing celebs promote one cause or another, but come on, this time of year it’s for the kids! Education and charities that promote children’s causes are at the top of many stars’ wish lists this year. If you’re anything like me, you’ve waited until the last minute to write those tax-deductible checks, so here are some worthy foundations that just happen to have some do-gooder friends in high places, plus a few celebs who are donating their wares to some great organizations. Like I said, it’s for the kids!!

Pencils of Promise: Pencils of Promise’s mission is to build schools around the world. So far, the organization has completed over 30 new buildings in the developing world. To raise funds this season, they are holding an auction of artwork from celebrities including Hugh Jackman, Jaden Smith, and Mariah Carey.

Actress Sophia Bush has volunteered in Laos with the organization, and told EW, “I’m thrilled by the commitments each village makes before construction begins, as it creates pride in the school with community investment.” READ FULL STORY »

Mitt Romney: Big Bird will have advertisements. Elmo's not tickled.

This PopWatch post is brought to you by the letter s. As in, SACRILEGE! As if it wasn’t enough that Bella married Edward this 2011 — forcing Team the Count to sadly disband — Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has plans to alter our beloved Sesame Street. While campaigning in Iowa Wednesday, Romney floated the possibility that the series, which airs on government-subsidized PBS, would no longer receive funding from the government should he be elected. Instead, Sesame Street would have to collect support from advertising. “We’re not going to kill Big Bird,” Romney said. “Big Bird is going to have advertisements, all right?”

It would be a shame — part of the appeal of Sesame Street is that it seems lost in time. Sure, we might see contemporary celebrities making guest appearances on the series, but we’ve never been forced to watch Mr. Snuffleupagus drink from Coke glasses or Bert gift Ernie a Nissan Rogue. For over 40 years, Sesame Street has simply remained one of the best learning tools for children in any medium. Maybe I just hate change, but it would be nice to be able to keep one of America’s most beloved institutions beloved, without any advertising intrusions.

Plus, the NASCAR look doesn’t really suit Big Bird. Video of Romney after the jump. Elmo is definitely not tickled, folks. READ FULL STORY »

This Week's Cover: Why we're so fascinated by Lisbeth Salander in 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo'

1188-ew-cover

She’s pierced, tattooed, socially awkward, and seethingly angry — and yet somehow we can’t seem to get her out of our minds.

In this week’s issue of Entertainment Weekly, writer Mark Harris explores what makes the character of Lisbeth Salander one of the most interesting of our time. Of course, the edgy heroine from Stieg Larsson’s novels is already known around the world — tens of millions have read the Millenium Trilogy, and Noomi Rapace depicted the dark female in the Swedish film adaptations — but with the release of David Fincher’s new The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo adaptation last week, American audiences are meeting the strange, vengeful hacker once again — and in a very new way, thanks to 26-year-old actress Rooney Mara. Poll: If you could smooch a celeb on New Year's Eve, who would it be?

Tim-Tebow

Everyone’s thought about it. Plus, they make it look so easy in the movies. So if you had one chance to kiss one celeb when the clock strikes midnight on Saturday, who would you choose? According to a poll on Zillow.com, Tim Tebow or J. Lo make the best celebrity next-door neighbors. So we’re wondering if you’d go a step further and plant one on the QB or scoop the Idol judge up on New Year’s Eve, too.

I have to go with Ryan Gosling this time around. The chance to hear him say “Hey girl, have a great 2012″ would just be too good to pass up.

Pick your favorite below or add someone to the list in the comments. READ FULL STORY »

Princess Leia headphone covers: More socially acceptable than a gold bikini?

I know we’re a couple days late for gift-giving, but file this under ‘things I can’t live without and ZOMG how did this not exist when I was camping out for the New Hope rerelease in 1997?’: Princess Leia headphone covers.

That’s right – it appears that the obvious has only just now come to Etsy, that treasure trove of handicrafts. Tech blog Geekology discovered this piece of pop culture gold, and notes that you could alternatively (as generations have done before) “glue a pair of cinnamon rolls to your headphones,” but, um, that sounds sticky.

The force is definitely with creator Jacqui Longlegs who posted her various Leia looks on her blog.

Better stock up now — Comic-Con is only six months away, people.

Who was 2011's worst-dressed TV character?

Let’s face it: Not everyone on TV can be Victoria Grayson (Madeline Stowe), whose immaculate gown collection on Revenge makes her look like she’s stepped out of a magical silk sea that changes jewel tones at her every whim and envelops her in liquid wealth for every occasion — “breakfast,” for example. Nope, sometimes people on TV just look like crap. I’ve started a list of 2011′s Worst-Dressed TV People below. But it will likely seem as incomplete as Kurt’s ridiculous one-sleeved cowl-neck sweater on Glee, so please add your own suggestions in the comments! READ FULL STORY »

Jerry Sandusky might talk to Oprah: History says it'd be a really bad move (but probably good for viewers)

Oprah Winfrey’s couch was once the go-to place for headline-makers in their time of public scrutiny. She was fair — but tough. Blunt but not crass. And, most importantly, she could get people to tune in.

As Jerry Sandusky reportedly contemplates sitting down with the one-time Queen of Daytime Talk TV, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want this to happen — mostly because it’d be a powerfully bad move on his part. (Trainwrecks=must-watch?) There’s little doubt in my mind that Sandusky’s appearance would join the ranks of the most brutal Oprah interviews ever. (Yes, I’m looking at you, James Frey.)

Of course, not all so-called controversial interviews resulted in bloodshed. In fact, you might be able to say that a few people in the hot seat have come out on top after appearing on Oprah, a rare but important side effect of answering the harder questions with candidness.

Which film raced to the top of the list of 2011's most pirated films?

Fast-Five

We know Fast Five‘s audience clearly loves cars, but millions couldn’t bring themselves to actually get in their vehicles and drive to see the film in theaters. Instead, they relied on their computers to see the Vin Diesel-Dwayne Johnson hit, as it topped the list of the 10 most pirated films of 2011 with nearly 9.3 million downloads, according to TorrentFreak. And, yes, that means Fast Five finished in front of anticipated blockbusters like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2 (which grabbed the No. 10 slot) and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 1 (which did not even make the list).
