Jane Fonda on the GOP candidates: 'They all scare me, frankly.' -- VIDEO

No matter what your political affiliation, watching a debate can make you feel anywhere from relieved to hopeful to angered to excited to grumpy to sleepy. (Any of the Seven Dwarfs would apply, really.) But it seems Jane Fonda has two very distinct emotions when it comes to the unending GOP debates: Depressed and scared.

The actress/activist, talked with Piers Morgan on his CNN program Sunday night and discussed, among other things, the current Republican candidates. When asked which of the politicians impress her and which ones scare her, Fonda responded, ” They all scare me, frankly. I get depressed and scared when I look at the Republican debates.” (Here’s something that might depress and scare Fonda even more: Last night’s Iowa debate on ABC News was the most-watched one yet.)

While Fonda wouldn’t say whether or not front-runners Mitt Romney or New Gingrich scared her (Newt Romney, if you will) she did explain her apprehension with all of the candidates. “I’m worried about anybody getting elected to office who says we have to do away with or privatize Social Security, we have to reduce medical health insurance, we have to not raise taxes,” Fonda told Morgan, adding that Republicans implying “there’s no problem with the environment … this worries me.”

'Mass Effect 3,' 'BioShock Infinite,' 'Diablo III': Which upcoming game are you most excited for?

Filed under: Videogames and tagged: , ,

While the time-suck fantasy spectacular The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim may have pillaged the Game of the Year award at the 2011 VGAs, the ceremony itself seemed as steadfastly focused on the future of gaming as its most recent past. Sneak peeks at wildly anticipated titles like Mass Effect 3, BioShock Infinite, Diablo III, and a super-quick look at Command & Conquer: Generals 2 all had tongues wagging and thumbs twitching.

Amid all these sequels and threquels and (as my colleague Darren Franich would likely say) spin-off-pre-boot-quels, though, I was most tantalized by the first look at a brand spanking new title: The Last of Us. READ FULL STORY »

'Boardwalk Empire' season 2 finale react: 'Lost' in transition

Raise your hand if you didn’t see that coming! In the wake of last week’s mind-blowing, how-did-they-fit-all-that-in-one-hour?! episode, I suspect many us went into tonight’s season finale wondering what was left to say and do. Because, really, once you go Oedipal, really what else is there? Well, plenty apparently. To name a few key (and often overlapping) developments: The amassing of a stack of bodies that reached the ceiling, a scuttled trial, a wedding, and several acts of betrayal. Series creator and showrunner Terence Winter (who wrote the episode — and who discussed the shocking finale with our own James Hibberd) lit a fuse at the beginning of this episode — at the beginning of the season, really — that was quietly sizzling in the background, lulling us into a sense of calm (especially after last week, which, did I mention was insane?!) and then… BAM!  READ FULL STORY »

'Kourtney and Kim Take New York': Kim wants a baby and Scott wants a threesome

kim-kourtney

Last night’s episode of Kokomo and Kaiser Wilhelm Take Newt Gingrich began with Kris playing around with little Baby Mason. “Vroom vroom, you’re an airplane!” he said. At some point, Kris stopped playing with Baby Mason and started playing with Kim. (It’s an understandable mistake: To Kris Humphries, anyone under five feet tall pretty much looks the same.) He trapped Kim inside of a tiny cardboard house. He said, “Grr, I’m a tornado!” and was pushing the house back and forth. He laughed and laughed and laughed, and the whole time his lovely munchkin wife was screaming. By way of apology, he picked her up and put her into a crib and said, “Good night, my little baby.”

That horrifying sequence set the tone for the episode, which was mostly focused on babies. (And also Maid/Manservant Threesome Porno, but let’s get to that later.) See, Kim ran out of birth control pills, and then walked downstairs and announced, “I just finished my birth control pack, and I think it’s a sign that I shouldn’t take it anymore.” Kourtney asked her sister if she was really ready to be a mother. For Kourtney, being “ready” means that you can pretend to be a frog. “Ribbit ribbit,” yelled Kourtney, “Ribbit ribbit!” READ FULL STORY »

'Saturday Night Live' recap: Host Katy Perry was surprisingly restrained. Matt Damon, Val Kilmer, and Alec Baldwin? Not so much

The word on the street about last night’s Saturday Night Live was that the show would be all about Katy Perry’s breasts. True, by “the word on the street” I really mean “something Katy Perry said earlier in the week to get people to watch.” But a heavage-heavy show wouldn’t have been a surprising scenario. After all, the last time the pneumatic hit machine appeared on SNL she was treated as something to be squeezed into a too-tight Elmo t-shirt rather than someone who could necessarily be trusted to bring the funny.

This Week on Stage: Cillian Murphy, Dule Hill, and Alicia Keys in New York

STICK-FLY

The boards were busy this week. Big stars like Cillian Murphy (Inception) and Mekhi Phifer (ER) made their New York stage debuts. The Off Broadway musical adaptation of the Oscar-winning indie movie Once announced its move to Broadway just hours before its opening night performance. And we caught up with Cirque du Soleil’s dance-heavy Michael Jackson tribute show in Las Vegas. Read the highlights below:

Misterman: I give this one-man show, written by Irish playwright Enda Walsh and starring Cillian Murphy as a man ostracized from his Irish village, an A-, calling it “the perfect pairing of unorthodox playwright and fearless actor” and noting that “I’ve never seen an actor tear up as convincingly as Murphy.”

Once: Misterman scribe Walsh also penned the book to this Broadway-bound stage version of the Oscar-winning 2006 Irish film Once, which earns a B from correspondent Keith Staskiewicz, who criticizes its “cornball elements” but admits that “the production’s sheer energy makes up for much of the soppiness.” READ FULL STORY »

Stay up late to watch Katy Perry on Saturday Night Live? Did you celebrate New Year’s Eve early with 41 of your closest onscreen celebrity friends? That is all so eight hours ago. PopWatch is already looking ahead to the coming week of must-see water-cooler events, starting with tonight’s season finale of Boardwalk Empire and culminating with Saturday’s much-anticipated SNL homecoming of the season.

SUNDAY
Boardwalk Empire finale, 9 p.m., HBO
All the king’s horses and all the king’s men can’t put my psyche back together after last week’s episode, which only explained everything about Jimmy (Michael Pitt). (I always suspected something was off between him and his mom, but for the show to go all Grifters was still a shock.) Tonight, season 2 concludes with Jimmy seeking a rapprochement with Nucky, whose legal complications might hinge on his own lady’s heavy Irish conscience. READ FULL STORY »

Katy Perry hosts tonight's 'Saturday Night Live': Talk about it here!

Don’t worry Stefon, we’ll tell her. (Psssst Katy, he’s definitely not the one that got away.)

While Katy Perry has appeared on Saturday Night Live before (she was the musical guest during an episode last September, in which she also appeared in a sketch poking fun at herself and her Sesame Street controversy), this will mark the pop star’s first go as a host. Perry will also be accompanied by her touring buddy Robyn, who will be on hand as musical guest for tonight’s brand-new episode. Watch the latest promo featuring Perry, Robyn, and Bill Hader’s Stefon below. (I would have guessed they’d save Stefon for next week’s year-end episode when Jimmy Fallon returns to SNL as host, but an early Stefon arrival is just as good as any early Christmas present.) Is 2012 going to be the Year of the Dude Movie?

breaking-dawn-greene-reed

According to the results of a poll just released by Fandango, the most anticipated blockbuster for women in 2012 is The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn; Part 2. I would imagine that the first instinct of many moviegoers, upon hearing that information, is a forehead-slap followed by a long groan. But when you look at the list of big movies next year, it’s hard to blame the female population for returning to the glowy-skinned arms of the Twilight franchise. The Hollywood blockbuster season is always male-dominated, but it’s striking just how many dude-centric movies dominate the schedule next year. READ FULL STORY »
