Contrarian Corner: The Academy can no longer 'ignore' Meryl Streep

Oscar can be a softie. The Academy Awards has a long track record of rewarding deserving actors and directors after years of neglect. (See: Scorsese, Martin; Newman, Paul.) As it normally goes, a storyline often emerges during Oscar season that a nominee is due, that it’s his or her time, that the Academy can redeem itself with a single stroke. This year, I believe that sentimental favorite should be Meryl Streep. READ FULL STORY »

Nicole Scherzinger discusses Rachel Crow's shocking 'X Factor' exit with Jimmy Kimmel -- VIDEO

X Factor judges Simon Cowell, Nicole Scherzinger, L.A. Reid, and Paula Abdul sat down with Jimmy Kimmel last night. It was a particularly tough discussion for Scherzinger, as she was indirectly responsible for sending home spunky 13-year-old Rachel Crow, who had a gut-wrenching onstage breakdown in front of millions of fans. Of course Kimmel replayed the clip, and even Cowell had to admit, “It was even worse than I remember.”

After Abdul defended her, Scherzinger explained, “In the moment and under pressure, it’s not as easy to just be like, ‘Hey, this what I’m going to do and you’re going home!’” She insisted, “I own the decision that I made,” and expressed her happiness about reports that Crow is in talks to sign a deal with Disney. See Scherzinger’s horrified reaction to the replay in the full interview after the jump. READ FULL STORY »

The Legend of Tim Tebow continues to grow... in song

Tim Tebow has been a folk hero ever since he strapped on a helmet at the University of Florida. In college, the son of Christian missionaries won the Heisman Trophy and led the Gators to two national titles. Pro scouts dismissed — and continue to doubt — his unorthodox mechanics and unique skill set, but this season, he’s added to his legend by reversing the fortunes of the Denver Broncos with an unbelievable stretch of miraculous last-minute comebacks that has the once 1-4 Broncs on the cusp of the playoffs.

More importantly, he’s been immortalized in song, most recently by the mixers at ESPN. Like Tebow himself, it’s primitive but ultimately entertaining. Watch. READ FULL STORY »

Watch: Chelsea Clinton's 'Rock Center' debut

Considering we’ve watched Chelsea Clinton grow up right before our eyes, it should feel almost jarring to watch the former First Daughter enter the next phase of her life, as an NBC News correspondent. But Clinton’s first appearance on Rock Center, and the introduction of her human-interest segment “Making a Difference,” was so poised and restrained you’d have thought she’d been doing this for years. Watch the full clip — in which Clinton spotlights an outstanding Arkansas woman named Annette Dove who created a program called TOPPS, which gives assistance underprivileged children — below: READ FULL STORY »

Gorillas in the Christmas: What did you think of last night's 'Two and a Half Men'?

If you always sort of suspected that Ashton Kutcher must have been raised by gorillas (how else would you explain his current hair, tweeting habits, or Killers?) then watching last night’s episode of Two and a Half Men would have felt immensely satisfying. But how was it for fans of the show who discovered, alongside Kutcher’s character Walden, that he was brought up with a gorilla (named… Magilla) until he was four-years-old? READ FULL STORY »

Disney unveils Princess Sofia, aimed at toddlers. Why couldn't she be a mathematician?

When I was a young girl, I loved princesses. How could I not? They were gorgeous, sparkly, and talked to small furry animals. But I also loved rock stars (thanks to my gorgeous and sparkly Barbie and the Rockers doll), tiny horses (thanks to my gorgeous and sparkly ponies on My Little Pony), and, for a short period of time, Pee-wee’s Playhouse‘s Miss Yvonne. (Hey, she was sparkly.)

My point is, young girls will love anything covered in pastel hues and sold on a TV screen. So I can’t help but feel a bit dismayed that Disney is banking on the success of a new character aimed at 2- to 7-year-old girls, Princess Sofia. According to the New York Times, Sofia — pictured above — will star in her own TV series, Sofia the First, and film. It’s a character that makes sense within the confines of Disney, a company that owes a large portion of its success to its Princess line, which stretches all the way back to 1937′s Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. But it’s also a disturbing character to see grabbing the spotlight in our modern world, which rightly prides itself on bucking gender stereotypes. READ FULL STORY »

'Modern Warfare 3' beats 'Avatar,' makes $1 billion in 16 days

Modern Warfare 3 is not a particularly good game. It doesn’t have to be. Over the last few years, Activision has smartly built the Call of Duty franchise up from its humble roots as a Medal of Honor clone into a brand so all-encompassing that it’s practically a medium unto itself. Every November, a new Call of Duty game hits stores, and downloadable packages throughout the year keep the CoD community buzzing. So we shouldn’t be too surprised that Modern Warfare 3 has officially beaten the quickest-to-a-billion-dollars record that was previously set by Avatar. James Cameron’s operatic Fern Gully remake took 17 days to hit that landmark, Modern Warfare 3 took just 16. That’s an incredible benchmark for the series, and it’s evidence that the videogame industry has become one of the most economically vibrant corners of the media marketplace. READ FULL STORY »

What’s The Price of Beauty? About $3 million if you’re Jessica Simpson. That’s how much the expectant mother is reportedly earning to in a deal with Weight Watchers. It seems Simpson will head directly from the delivery room to the treadmill this spring. All credit to Simpson for taking back control of her body, but couldn’t she have at least let the afterbirth dry? What message does this sprint back to her pre-baby body send to other new moms? Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez to celebrate New Year's Eve on different networks

Every time I think I’m a grown up, I find myself caring about something like whether Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez will be able to share a kiss at midnight on New Year’s Eve. They’ll both be in NYC, but performing on different networks. Gomez will take the stage for MTV’s NYE in NYC 2012, along with Demi Lovato, Jason Derulo, Mac Miller, and J. Cole. Bieber is one of the performers on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2012, as well as Lady Gaga, Pitbull, and Hot Chelle Rae in New York, and The Band Perry, blink-182, Christina Perri, Florence + The Machine, Gym Class Heroes, LMFAO, OneRepublic, Nicki Minaj, Taio Cruz, and will.i.am in Los Angeles. Were I a network exes, I’d try to find a way to block off a tiny portion of the street so Bieber and Gomez could run to each other as the clock ticked down and the million-strong crowd’s cheers swelled. I want to see the ball drop, but I would totally watch the romantic Bieber-Gomez kiss picture-in-picture. Bieber likes grand romantic gestures. THIS COULD BE HIS BIGGEST ONE YET!
