Without 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition' on the air, which show will make you cry most?

Though there will be the occasional special in the future, ABC has announced that the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition bus will run out of gas after its 200th episode airs Jan. 13. Without that show to pull on your heartstrings, where will you turn?

While my colleague Kristen Baldwin was quick to send me the note, “Don’t forget Undercover Boss!”, I tend to shy away from reality shows that induce tears (unless we’re talking season 6 of Deadliest Catch). I love it when scripted shows take me there unexpectedly. I’ve found myself sobbing watching The Vampire Diaries before (I lost my father at the end of September, so Anna’s reunion with Pearl hit me hard) and tearing up on a semi-regular basis to all the moments TVD EP Julie Plec mentioned in our Best of 2011 (Behind the Scenes) chat about the series. I’ve been surprised at how often Amy Poehler’s Leslie Knope has made my eyes misty this season: SPOILER ALERT! That fragile look she gave Adam Scott’s Ben when she told him she was done steam-rolling people and asked him how he felt after baring her soul; Ethel reading aloud the transcript and hearing Ben say that losing his job was worth it because he loves Leslie; and Leslie’s friends (minus Jerry) announcing what roles they would take in her city-council campaign. I’ve said it before, Liz Lemon used to be the character I related to most on TV, but now I’d much rather be a Leslie than a Liz. Leslie is appreciated and loved, and there’s never any question of whether she’s deserving.

Your turn. Which shows start the waterworks for you?

Hugh Hefner talks about Lindsay Lohan's 'Playboy' spread

Filed under: News and tagged: ,

In a recent interview with E!, Hugh Hefner discussed his initial ambivalence about Lindsay Lohan’s Playboy pictorial. The mogul explained that his Chicago editors suggested reaching out to Lohan, which “really came as a surprise to me.” He admitted he had “kind of mixed emotions about it initially.” Perhaps alluding to Lohan’s bumpy track record with court and rehab, he said, “I wasn’t sure where she was at in her life, obviously.” What else did Hefner say about Lohan’s shoot? See the full video below.

Christopher Hitchens, in his own words -- VIDEO

Since it’s nearly impossible to find the right words in order to give the proper credit to the fascinating, daring life and legacy of Christopher Hitchens (yep, this just about expresses exactly what it feels like today) it’s best to let him do the talking. In the wake of the passing of Hitchens, who died at the age of 62 after a battle with esophageal cancer, fans are remembering the writer and polemicist through his literary works, as well as his many televised appearances and public talks. Below are clips of some of his most memorable moments. Watch and — as Hitchens would have wanted — learn: READ FULL STORY »

In a recent interview with IndieWire.com, actor/comedian David Cross described working on Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked– Ghost Protocol: A Game of Shadows — Sorry, but that title is ripe for parody! Ripe! — “the most unpleasant experience I’ve ever had in my professional life.” Meanwhile, EW’s own Adam Markovitz called the third installment in the series, “Nothing more than a cynical stab at grabbing kids’ attention—and, more importantly, their parents’ cash.” (In short, you actually couldn’t pay people enough to want to deal with Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked. Not even some of the people in it.) READ FULL STORY »

One more thing to cross off your list: Tom Hanks plants a big, wet holiday kiss on America -- VIDEO

While Thanksgiving is technically Tom Hanks’ holiday (T-Hanksgiving… get it?!) that doesn’t mean the Oscar-winning actor can’t partake in all the frivolity of Christmas. Especially when that fun includes hanging mistletoe over your own head and planting a big, wet smooch for all of America to enjoy. Which is exactly what the Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close star did during his visit to The Late Show with David Letterman on Thursday night. Hanks shared his very intimate holiday greeting with viewers by giving a huge smooch into, well really, on the camera and sending out his wish, “Merry Christmas, baby!” Watch the moment below. (And hey, if you’re going to kiss him back, don’t forget your own Windex, either!) READ FULL STORY »

Stephen Colbert aims firepower at grinches -- VIDEO

On last night’s Colbert Report, Stephen Colbert took on those who would dare call a Christmas tree a holiday tree, department stores who’ve done away with gift wrapping (the visual approximation of one spokesperson is classic), and Santas who feel compelled to tell children on their laps that he and the Mrs. can’t afford an iPad. After nearly breaking down sharing a painful childhood memory, he announced one bit of good news on the “Christmas war front” — the Scottsdale Gun Club is letting parents and their children pose with Santa and the weapons of their choice. Cue Colbert’s near makeout session with his Santa hat-wearing handgun, Sweetness. Watch it below. Just another reason why The Colbert Report made Ken Tucker’s list of the Top 10 TV shows of the year. Best of 2011: Viral video edition!

The first 10 years of the new millennium brought us Christian the LionAntoine Dodson, and some formerly floppy-haired Canadian kid you may have heard of named Justin Bieber, so how has the first year of this decade shaped up, virally speaking? Well, let’s see… hydrangeas were pronounced hateful (or, to be more accurate, loathsome), Beauty and the Beast got the West Hollywood treatment, a respected newsman collapsed into giggles over a Frenchman’s urine, a teen shot to stardom by serenading a day of the week, and… well, we could go on and on. Instead, we’ve posted all that’s fit to embed over the next several pages. Best of 2011: 'The Book of Mormon' leads EW's Top 10 stage list

The-Book-of-Mormon

It’s been a rather remarkable year for theater — and not just because the most expensive musical ever produced finally opened and (perhaps more remarkably) is still spinning its web on 42nd Street. (Who’d have guessed the lights would still be on at Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark?) A remarkable number of 2011′s new productions found fresh and inventive ways to surprise, delight, and challenge audiences — from a genuinely original musical by Broadway newbies (The Book of Mormon, pictured at left) to two Chekhov revivals starring Hollywood stars (Three Sisters with Maggie Gyllenhaal and Uncle Vanya with Cate Blanchett) to an immersive, choose-your-own-adventure event in a six-story warehouse space (Sleep No More). Without further ado, here are EW’s top 10 standouts in stage: READ FULL STORY »
