'The Dark Knight Rises' prologue audience reaction: Frantic excitement, followed by the sound of silence

the_dark_knight_rises

Hardcore Batman fans are legion. 2008′s The Dark Knight was a once-in-a-decade zeitgeist sensation — the rare movie that people actually wanted to see more than once — and expectations are sky-high for next year’s Dark Knight Rises. The prologue for Rises officially debuted ahead of Mission: Impossible–Ghost Protocol, thus guaranteeing that film an instantaneous Nolan Bump of cultural necessity and there was already a long line two hours before the midnight screening at the Lincoln Square AMC last night. I was secretly hoping that the line would be composed of hardcore Mission: Impossible fans — you know, the kind of people who wear Jon Voight masks and carry cigar cutters autographed by Dougray Scott and engage in the neverending “Short-haired Ethan vs. Long-haired Ethan” debate. But people like that don’t actually exist.

Tom Cruise thinks David Beckham could be an action hero. What other jocks belong on the silver screen?

Could David Beckham really be a movie star? His pal, Tom Cruise, thinks so. At a recent premiere of Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol, the film’s star was asked if the soccer legend could step into his line of work. “I’d love to do action movies with Beckham,” Cruise said on the red carpet. “He would be great, he could kick ass.”

Of course, Beckham is, in many ways, already bigger than our most famous movie stars. His popularity was so transcendent they titled a whole movie after his extraordinary ability to bend a soccer ball. He’s handsome, he’s stylish, he’s charming. He could be a movie star. In fact, when Beckham joined the Los Angeles Galaxy in 2007, it was assumed that the lure of Hollywood was a major factor in his decision to play in the less-competitive American soccer league. Only 36 years old, he could still easily make the transition to show business as his days on the pitch wind down.

It’s an interesting parlor game: What celebrity athletes have the looks, and more importantly, the aura, to translate fluidly on the silver screen? READ FULL STORY »

R. Kelly selling house: Must. Resist. Closet. Joke.

It’s been a crazy time for real estate, with American Horror Story‘s Murder House going for sale, and now “Bump N’ Grind”-ing R&B crooner R. Kelly is putting his 22,000 square-foot Illinois spread on the block. With an asking price of $1.59 million, the six-bedroom, eight-bathroom joint (that’s not including six half-baths) features a jungle-themed indoor pool, a private lake with a fountain and waterfall, several fireplaces, and a state-of-the-art kitchen (girlfriend-seducing, cabinet-sized little person not included).

What do you think, PopWatchers? Would you buy Kelly’s house. Considering the relatively low asking price, do you think part of the deal is that you have to use the high-tech home theater sound system to play “I Believe I Can Fly” at least five times a day in perpetuity?

Obama girls not allowed on Facebook, don't get it anyway

Obama-family-portrait

In the latest issue of People magazine, the President and First Lady sit down to take a serious look back at 2011 and lightheartedly remind us that they’re just like us. The big news (for pop culture fans): President Obama watches Boardwalk Empire and Homeland, while wife Michelle and daughters Malia, 13, and Sasha, 10, prefer Modern Family. There, now you know what to talk to them about should you ever meet them. According to People.com, the Obamas only recently got a DVR installed in their second-floor family quarters in the White House. Reason I will never be asked to interview the Obamas: I would have wasted valuable time having them go through all their season passes.

Also of note: The girls aren’t allowed on Facebook, but they don’t want to be on it anyway: “Their theory is, ‘Why would we want to have a whole bunch of people who we don’t know knowing our business?’” the president says. “We’ll see how they feel in four years.” (Somehow, it hits home when children say it, right?)

P.S. My favorite line of the People White House interview is, “He kissed his wife, Michelle, and rolled his eyes at the jingle-bell collar she’d put on their dog Bo.”

Best of 2011: Top-selling apps

Filed under: News and tagged: , , ,
angrybirds

After two years at the top, do these Birds really have a reason to be Angry any more? Topping three of the four lists for 2011′s top-selling apps, they were joined by another bird — one who sticks to a strict limit of 140 characters or less — an Internet streaming company who’ve had an up-and-down year, a seemingly unstoppable social network, and, of course, zombies. So what other apps made the cut? Click through to see the year’s most popular downloads.* READ FULL STORY »

This year saw smash sales for games that got us dancing in our living rooms, spiking footballs in the end zone, and taking out enemies at home and abroad. The Best and Worst Movie Posters of 2011

No, that image above is not a real Larry Crowne poster. But don’t you wish it were? The Hollywood Movie Poster has been on life support for a few decades now. Criterion Collection DVD covers are more creative. Amateur practitioners like Mondo have crossed over into the mainstream. And it turns out that freaking Poland makes better movie posters than we do. By comparison, the typical Hollywood poster can’t help but look bland…which makes it all the more impressive when something sticks out from the pack. In the video below, I round up the two best and two worst posters of the year. (Click here for more of our favorites, and click here for more of our least favorites.) Hint: Larry Crowne is not one of the best. READ FULL STORY »

'Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol': Dubai a ticket to see this great action sequence!

Ghost-Protocol

Image Credit: Industrial Light & Magic

I had a fair number of questions going into my screening of Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol. Would a 50-year-old Tom Cruise still be able to pull off the action scenes? Would my favorite director, Brad Bird, the man behind the best cartoon that everyone ignored (The Iron Giant), be able to effectively helm a live-action blockbuster? And whoa, when did titles start having colons and hyphens? (A pressing question for an EW blogger!)

Perhaps the biggest question on my mind, though, was simple: Will MI:4 be any good?

The answer, I’m happy to report, is… absolutely! And there’s one particular section that had the whole audience clapping: the much advertised Dubai sequence, because much like Mission: Impossible 3‘s Italy-Vatican arc, Ghost Protocol‘s middle act proves to be its most enthralling. Best of 2011: The Top 10 Videogames of 2011, Part 1

Filed under: News, Videogames and tagged:
Dead-Space-2

Are we on the cusp of a videogame renaissance? Or have the glory days of the medium already gone by, left behind in a simpler time before multiplatform releases and casual-gamer mediocrities and the-sequel-as-glorified-expansion-pak? This year provided no easy answers for those who want to ponder the future of the videogame industry. Call of Duty broke impossible records yet again, even though no one particularly seemed to enjoy it. The exciting possibilities of motion-control gaming remained just possibilities: The PlayStation Move is still awaiting its killer app, and the Kinect is quickly evolving into a household appliance as essential and as boring as a toaster. The year’s most intriguing non-sequels were either fascinating failures… or they were delayed into 2012. But even if it was a bit of an off-year, there were still plenty of games that offered revelatory experiences, which pushed the boundaries of the form, and which just plain reinvented our whole notion of what fun could be. Check out numbers 10-8 on our 2011 top 10 list in the video below — we’ll publish the rest of the list as soon as we finish investing in the Skyrim real estate market. READ FULL STORY »
