Santa 2012: Election to replace Santa Claus heats up on FunnyOrDie

It’s an election year at the North Pole, and the campaign to replace the current jolly incumbent is heating up. It feels like a change election, and FunnyOrDie has the latest ads from the Santa wannabes who want to make Mr. C a mere 53-termer. Mack Henry is likely polling well with the Yukon Cornelius crowd: he can kill a reindeer and he vows to find Heatmiser’s volcano compound! Kathleen Heyward’s Christian-values pitch would be funnier, if it didn’t so closely echo some of our actual candidate’s political platforms. Watch the entire FunnyOrDie.com clip below and then vote for your new Santa.

A new hope in the Czech Republic, where 'Star Wars' is a religion

The Czech Republic just released the results of its recent national census. Most of the details will only be interesting to Mitteleuropa fanboys — yowza, the amount of people who self-identify as Moravians has doubled! — but the website Czech Position highlights one intriguing quirk: 15,070 of respondents marked their religion as “Knights of the Jedi.” Admittedly, that only comes out to about .001% of the population. But hey, there was a time when Christianity was just thirteen dudes wandering through a desert. Could Star Wars actually become a viable religion? READ FULL STORY »

Kim Jong-il in pop culture: Is his 'Team America' 'cameo' best of all?

Filed under: Television, TV and tagged: ,

As biography writers dig into their book of unconfirmed facts to pen obits about the elusive dictator Kim Jung-il today, following his death from a heart attack, here at PopWatch, we’re watching Team America.

The North Korean dictator’s contribution to pop culture might be a small one (and, to be clear, we’re okay with that) but — at least, most of the time — hilarious. So enjoy these bits from his “appearance” in Team America, “The Kim Jong-il Show” from MADtv, and if you can find a clip of Amy Poehler doing her impression on SNL, share with the rest of the class. (If you can’t post it in comments for some reason, Tweet it to me: @EWSandraG)

Oh boy, this was yet another exciting episode of Kanakaredes and Ghostface Killah Prank New South Wales! “Exciting”is a synonym for “miserable,” right? Anyhow, the episode began with Li’l Kim and Big Hump having a charming little marital squabble. Kris wanted to throw a party in their lavish suite while Kim traveled to Los Angeles. Kim vetoed the idea. He insisted. She began crawling all over him, looking for all the world like a Jack ascending the beanstalk. She kicked his leg. He put his gigantic Frankenstein hands all over her Pinocchio face. “Stop it, stop it!” said Scott, “You’re both killing one another’s careers right now! Her face! Your legs!” This marriage can’t fail. (Spoiler alert: It failed.)

Here’s a quick roadmap of the evening’s various decadent flim-flammeries: READ FULL STORY »

‘Geek Love’ react: Surprisingly awesome?

It’s hard out there for a geek. They may grow up to be super-successful, but the nerds on last night’s TLC special Geek Love proved they still have a ways to go in the dating department.

In the two special episodes that aired (TLC is currently testing the show for a potential series), viewers were treated to the personal tales of a handful of the individuals that make the pilgrimage to Comic Con each year — many of them sadly single. The show centered around a speed-dating event at NY Comic Con, led by Ryan Glitch, founder of Sci-Fi Speed Dating. Glitch explained he got inspired to create this event because the typical bar scene doesn’t work for Comic Con folk. When the costumed Trekkies, Potterphiles, and Iron Men came into the convention center, you could see why: It was simply too much fandom for most people to take. But what made the TLC special work — and what separated it from the network’s other recent programs, like Virgin Diaries — was that it didn’t feel like anyone was being exploited or mocked. The show was set up so viewers would root for these socially awkward people to find love — and I did. READ FULL STORY »

Best of 2011 (or is that Worst?): The year in reality TV meltdowns

No reality TV show can really call itself worthy of the name without at least one tear-streaked, red-faced, expletive-laden meltdown — the more out of left field, the better. And 2011 was chockablock with them, from Snooki on Jersey Shore to Taylor Armstrong on Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, from Meat Loaf on Celebrity Apprentice to Maksim Chmerkovskiy on Dancing With the Stars. Let us count the ways:  READ FULL STORY »

Best of 2011: The Year in Memes

After 2011, will the word “occupy” ever mean the same thing to you again? Can you ever deny the omnipotence of Ryan Gosling? (He’s a gentleman and a feminist scholar!) A Californian taxidermist and a Pop Tart-shaped cat with a catchy theme song suddenly had relevance, and everyday folks like you and me suddenly had a chance for a date with the likes of Justin Timberlake.

These are just a sampling of the most memorable memes to overtake the World Wide Web over the last 12 months. We’ve got one for every month. Check them out after the jump! READ FULL STORY »

How well do actors and directors recall the details of their own work? We decided to put Emmy- and Tony-winning actor David Hyde Pierce to the test. The Frasier actor is now starring Off Broadway in Manhattan Theatre Club’s Close Up Space (opening Dec. 19) as a harried book editor with an estranged daughter, a scared intern, a useless office manager, and only one brilliant (if loud) author. But first, he must play Ken Jennings in our career Jeopardy! challenge. The category: his 30 years in showbiz.

1. In what theater did you make your Broadway debut in 1982′s Beyond Therapy?
The Brooks Atkinson Theatre.
Correct!

2. What is the name of the bookstore where your character worked in the 1988 movie Crossing Delancey?
Oh, no way. No, no way. I honestly cannot tell you. It was based on Shakespeare & Co., which was a great bookstore that used to be on the Upper West Side. What did they call it? Oh, Lord.
Answer: New Day Books

3. In 1993′s Sleepless in Seattle, how does your character, Dennis, define attraction?
I don’t remember. [After learning the answer] Wow, that is so Niles, and that was the year before I started Frasier. What I remember is that not only is that a very Niles line, but I was also married to a very Maris-like woman in Sleepless in Seattle. So it all comes full circle.
Answer: “When you’re attracted to someone it just means that your subconscious is attracted to their subconscious, subconsciously.” READ FULL STORY »

The Packers lost! The Colts won! Cats and dogs — living together! Mass hysteria! Week 15 of the NFL saw two streaks come to improbable ends, as the undefeated Packers fell to Kansas City the week after the Chiefs scalped their head coach. And in Indianapolis, the winless Colts shocked the Titans and moved within a game of losing their rights to next year’s No. 1 draft pick. Um, way to go, Indy?

Here’s what else you need to know about football to make nice with your face-painting co-workers:

1.) “Watching Tebow against Brady was like watching John McClane fight James Bond.”

'Saturday Night Live' host poll: Does Jimmy Fallon shoot right to the top?

The Lord of Late Night: The Return of the King! That was the vibe from last night’s year-end Saturday Night Live, in which Jimmy Fallon fulfilled his destiny and hosted a cameo-filled spectacular. It’s already being hailed as an instant classic, from the moment he groped Amy Poehler’s boob to the seasonal ice-rink farewell. He sang, he danced, he didn’t dance; it was a delight. A Fallon episode might just have to become a new SNL Christmas tradition.

But was he wicked-cool enough to dislodge Melissa McCarthy from the top of our Saturday Night Liveliest Host contest. READ FULL STORY »
