In coming up with a shortlist for the best and worst TV trends of the fall season, we’re starting to wonder if ABC’s Happy Endings and Fox’s New Girl are the same show. Anyway, here are some random trends we’ve noticed. Please, add your picks!
Deep V-neck shirts. Dave is a V-neck addict on Happy Endings, the gang mocked CeCe’s DJ ex-boyfriend Gavin for wearing too many on New Girl, and perhaps most demonstrably, Andy Samberg and Ben Stiller had an extreme Deep V-Off in an SNL digital short.
Parkour! How bizarre: Schmidt (Max Greenfield) on New Girl and Brad (Damon Wayans Jr.) on Happy Endings practiced this “method of movement focused on moving around obstacles with speed and efficiency” indoors within the same week. The best part about the Happy Endings scene was the way Jane (Eliza Coupe) casually moved her cocktail out of destruction’s way.
“Careful, man, there’s a beverage here!”
Characters starting the season in prison The Charming Sons on Sons of Anarchy, House on House, McGarrett on Hawaii Five-o, Jane on The Mentalist…
Steely-eyed ladies living double lives ABC’s Revenge and The CW’s Ringer come to mind — and maybe even Lana Parilla’s character on Once Upon a Time (though those characters are not aware of their now-and-then dualities). Is it Amanda or Emily? Bridget or Siobhan? Regina or the Evil Queen? And who are they going to MURDER?
Characters named Schmidt Ashton Kutcher’s Charlie Sheen-replacing character on Two and a Half Men is named Walden Schmidt. That’s all you need to know about this season of Two and a Half Men. Really we just wanted to mention New Girl’s Max Greenfield again. It happens.
Fake bickering between judges File this one under WORST: The scripted tiffs among The X Factor judges were so unbearable all season that they soured us to the increasingly fickle (just for the cameras?) judges on Dancing With the Stars. Stop fighting and oh.. .I don’t know… talk to the contestants!
The list is by no means complete. Which TV trends did we neglect? Nominate your own observations in the comments!
