Darth Vader is the Grinch in 'The Sith Who Stole Christmas' -- VIDEO

Darth Vader is one of the great movie villains, but something about the character just seems built for parody. Maybe it’s because — with his jet-black evil-samurai-robot suit and his stentorian speech patterns — he’s the definition of evil incarnate. Or maybe it’s because he’s wearing a mask, so it’s easy to dub in hilarious new dialogue. There’s a whole parade of great Vader spoof videos: “Vader Sessions,” which brilliantly mixed in dialogue from other James Earl Jones movies; the beloved “Chad Vader” series; “Darth Vader Being a Smartass,” possibly the best use of Final Cut’s “reverse clip” function ever; and of course, those hilarious three Star Wars spoofs which pretended that Darth Vader was a doofy crybaby with a rat-tail haircut. (That George Lucas: What a kidder!) To that canon we can now add “The Sith Who Stole Christmas,” where Darth Vader essays the role of the Grinch. Watch below: READ FULL STORY »

Patrice O’Neal, envelope-pushing comedian, radio personality, and actor, passed away this morning at the age of 41. O’Neal had battled diabetes before he suffered a stroke in October. Some of O’Neal’s celebrity fans have taken to Twitter to express their sadness at his untimely passing. Some, like Judah Friedlander, Craig Robinson, and Eugene Mirman, only posted a simple “R.I.P. Patrice O’Neal.” Others considered his films and mourned a friend they wished they’d known better. See what they had to say below. READ FULL STORY »

Keeping up with depressing quotes from Kim Kardashian: 'What I want isn't possible'

Reality star and all-around important person Kim Kardashian is as fickle with her romantic notions as baby Mason is with shoes, so let us briefly recap. A year ago, Kim klaimed that she would remain happily single for an entire year. In May, she broke that promise when she became engaged to NBA-player-slash-fart-enthusiast Kris Humphries. Finally, after quietly marrying in a tasteful ceremony last August, Kim shocked planet Earth by filing for divorce 72 days later. This was a lot for one mere Kardashian to handle, so Kim invited sisters Kourtney and Khloé to her intimate post-game tête-à-tête with Glamour magazine. On the topic of love, marriage, and her possibly permanently empty womb, here’s what Kim (and Khloé) had to say: READ FULL STORY »

Movie budget breakdown: What are the riskiest films of 2012?

Categories: Made Us Think, Movies
John-Carter

Robert Zemeckis had a beautiful dream. He thought performance-capture animation would save cinema. He believed in a glorious future where stars like Jim Carrey and Tom Hanks could play multiple roles in a single movie; where a beloved bulky Brit like Ray Winstone could play a glamorous six-pack-ripped action hero; where Seth Green could play a 9-year-old boy. Critics complained about the Uncanny Valley. “Bah,” responded Zemeckis, “I shall conquer the Uncanny Valley!” READ FULL STORY »

Ann Coulter gets silenced on 'Morning Joe' for calling John McCain a 'douchebag' -- VIDEO

It looks like Ann Coulter, who has a long history of saying things, is going to have put a(nother) dollar in the Douche Bag Jar. This time around it’s for her actually calling someone a “douche bag.”

During her visit Tuesday to MSNBC’s Morning Joe, which already has a low tolerance for political name-calling, Coulter got the silent treatment from the show when she went on a tirade about Sen. John McCain, at one point apparently referring to the former presidential candidate as a “douche bag.” (“Just blur it all out,” host Joe Scarborough instructed.) Still, at least 10 seconds of Coulter’s verbal rampage were muted by the network, leaving viewers to ponder what else she could have possibly said. Probably something along the lines of this. Watch the moment, courtesy of Politco, here: READ FULL STORY »

Aubrey Plaza's 'World of Warcraft' ad: Why the mixed response? -- VIDEO

I’m always amazed when someone takes the time to dislike something on YouTube. So how have 621 people disliked her World of Warcraft TV spot? Watch it below. Granted, her tone, if you’re not familiar with her dry, disaffected delivery on Parks and Recreation, could be an acquired taste. But she’s saying she became obsessed with the game — more than the boyfriend who gave it to her, which is why she dumped him. Is that the part that some WoW fans have a problem with? Eighty-some people have liked the comment “That’s a good message: ‘Hey nerds, get your girlfriend to play WoW. She’ll dump you.’” Other people seem to be upset that she originally asked her boyfriend for diamonds for her birthday present, which makes her materialistic — that was a joke. This is not the kind of woman who asks for diamonds. What gives? READ FULL STORY »

Consider this a PopWatch PSA: If there’s a holiday film you look forward to seeing each year, start checking the listings now. You don’t want to get a confessional e-mail from your friend Robb the morning after titled “My Hallmark Night” detailing how he stayed up late watching TV movies, including one of your favorites, 1999′s A Season for Miracles (starring Carla Gugino as the aunt who goes on the run with her niece and nephew to keep the kids together, David Conrad as the cop who falls for her, and Patty Duke as the angel who SPOILER ALERT! orchestrates their happily ever after). Luckily, it repeats Dec. 3 at 2 a.m. ET and Dec. 4 at 11 a.m. ET.

So, which holiday movie would it kill you to miss? My must-see is Flirting With Forty, the Lifetime movie starring Robert Buckley as the surfing instructor who gifts long-distance love Heather Locklear a bikini that she wears to take out the garbage on New Year’s Eve. READ FULL STORY »

Jim Parsons will return to Broadway in next season's 'Harvey'

The Big Bang Theory’s two-time Emmy winner Jim Parsons is trading in physics for psychosis next summer in the Roundabout Theatre Company’s upcoming revival of Mary Chase’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 1944 comedy, Harvey. Parsons, who made his Broadway debut as big-hearted hospital administrator Tommy Boatwright in last season’s Tony-winning Normal Heart revival, will play Elwood P. Dowd, an affable man whose best friend is the titular 6-foot 3½-inch imaginary rabbit. When Elwood’s odd behavior threatens his upstart sister’s social life, she tries to have him committed, only to end up in the loony bin herself. Broadway vets Jessica Hecht will play the sister and Charles Kimbrough (Murphy Brown’s deep-voiced Jim Dial) will play the hospital’s chief.

You might say it’s perfect casting — Parsons will be stepping into the shoes of fellow lanky comedian Jimmy Stewart, who (along with Frank Fay, Joe E. Brown, and Jack Buchanan) played Elwood during the show’s initial Broadway run, in the 1950 film, and the 1970 stage revival. Previews begin May 18, with the official opening night set for Jun. 14.

'The Muppets': Who was your favorite celebrity cameo?

muppets2

I walked into The Muppets this weekend completely unsure of what to expect. For the past few weeks — save EW’s cover story (woo for self promotion) — I’d generally avoided any and all stories, blurbs, and clips that threatened to spoil the movie and its surprises for me. When I’m excited about a movie — and, if I’m being honest, there aren’t that many I get excited about every year — there is no greater sin than spoiling it for me. (TV is, obviously, a different story.)

My patience was rewarded this weekend when I walked into the unspoiled glory of The Muppets and was treated to a number of great cameos, including one from [Spoiler alert, obviously...] READ FULL STORY »

“I don’t know your name, but I know your face. I don’t know your journey, but I know where you are. I am your brother!” This is the opening of an open letter Tyler Perry has written to the 11-year-old who is one of former Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky’s alleged victims.

In the letter, which will be published in this week’s Newsweek, Perry speaks from his own experience as a survivor of sexual abuse. He reveals personal details of how his voice went unheard when he tried to tell friends and family. He is frank, but supportive, about the lifelong trauma of abuse and offers encouraging words for the young boy who stood up, telling him, “to think that you, when you were only 11 years old, spoke up — you are my hero! I’m so proud of you.” Read more below. READ FULL STORY »
