'Uncharted 3' videogame review: Watch out, Hollywood. You just got Draked.

forest-sully-drake

At this point, saying an Uncharted game is akin to playing a top-tier Hollywood blockbuster — albeit a blockbuster that would have cost upwards of $500 million had it been made into an actual, live-action feature film – is almost something of a cliché. I’m on record for thinking that videogames have of late been beating big time movie studios at their own game, and 2007’s Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and especially 2009’s Uncharted 2: Among Thieves have been at the tip of that particular spear.

And yet I was still unprepared for just how gobsmackingly great Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception would be. (Be warned: MILD SPOILERS follow for this Playstation 3 title, but I promise an emphasis on “mild.”) READ FULL STORY »

As our own Adam B. Vary pointed out in advance of Kim Kardashian’s (ultimately doomed) televised wedding fete, there are some things that inevitably go unsaid when it comes to reality stars. As Real Housewives of Atlanta star Kim Zolciak showed off her engagement ring today, it got us thinking: What won’t we hear or see when it comes to Zolciak’s engagement party? READ FULL STORY »

'Glee' returns tonight... and goes for the gold

Filed under: Glee and tagged: ,

Yay! Baseball is finally over! And Glee returns tonight with Glee Project co-winner Damian McGinty (pictured), who shows up as new foreign exchange student Rory Flanagan. He’s staying with Brittany, who, of course, thinks he’s a leprechaun. I’m expecting loads of good Brittany-isms.

When we last saw Mercedes, she’d ditched New Directions for Shelby’s new glee club. Seems she’s gotten lonely over there with tone-deaf Sugar and sets out to recruit some other singers.

If McGinty is not enough to get you excited for the episodes to come, both Chord Overstreet’s Sam and Jonathan Groff’s Jesse St. James will be returning to the show soon. Life suddenly feels better now, huh?

Who else is looking forward to getting back to school? Talk about tonight’s episode here, and, as always, be sure to return to EW.com for my full recap!

Call them theater’s new supergroup: Five-time Tony winner Angela Lansbury, Tony nominees John Larroquette and Michael McKean, and five-time Emmy winner Candice Bergen are joining James Earl Jones in next spring’s Broadway revival of Gore Vidal’s The Best Man. That’s a lot of talent in one place when they start rehearsals on Jan. 30 (previews begin on Mar. 16, with an official opening on Apr. 1).

Watch out Evita: This could be 2012’s hottest ticket in town.

'Reality' check: Which has a longer shelf life -- frozen meat or a Kardashian 'I do'?

For a Hollywood marriage, Kim Kardashian’s 72 days of matrimonial miss were downright average. What’s more, groom Kris Humphries bested fellow NBA star Dennis Rodman by 800 percent, which is an old-fashioned butt kicking if you ask any statistician. But where does this soon-to-be-dissolved union stack against real world quantities? Keep reading…  READ FULL STORY »

Contrarian Corner: 'Bored to Death' is the most perfectly titled series on television

Filed under: TV and tagged:

You could argue that it’s a little silly to pick on a tiny show like Bored to Death. The HBO comedy has been averaging roughly a quarter of a million viewers this season, a number that barely even looks impressive on YouTube anymore. Or maybe the better comparison for Bored to Death is to an old-timey public access series, the kind of haphazard production a group of locals would organize back when the average local American still had time for hobbies. After all, the concerns of Bored to Death are so concerned with an extremely specific sliver of contemporary Brooklyn — the upper-middle-class Manhattan-expat media-employed all-white corner of town — that I wouldn’t be surprised if the 250,000 viewers who tune in weekly are all concentrated in a few square miles between Prospect Park and the BQE.

But Contrarian Corner has a democratic doorway. We run a need-blind admissions system. If we’re going to deconstruct chipper zeitgeist multimedia megahits, once-great sitcoms, and critical-establishment sensations, then we must also turn our brutal truth-crossbows onto the smaller mediocrities: The unkillable dregs of pop culture, which float like an annoying butterflies and sting like a bees that can’t write believable dialogue. And that is why I’m here to today, my friends in Contrarianism, to loudly proclaim my true feelings about Bored to Death. READ FULL STORY »

Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries divorce explained by Taiwanese animators -- VIDEO

The devastating news about the divorce of Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries has left us with so many unanswered questions: If those two kids can’t make it in this crazy, mixed-up world, who can? Why can’t I remember what I did 72 days ago? Are you there God? It’s me, PopWatch.

Thankfully, Taiwanese animators NMA, who always explain everything in a much clearer way, have come to the rescue. In just over a minute, their latest cartoon accurately pinpoints every major detail from the wedding bonanza and divorce bonanza, including how Kris wanted Kim to move to Minnesota with him (to wear Viking helmets, apparently) and that he was so caught off guard by the divorce (after she coldy alerted him by spelling out “DIVORCE” in rose petals) that he was (literally) steaming mad. Watch the full clip below. Looks so much like Kim it’s uncanny, isn’t it PopWatchers? READ FULL STORY »

YouTube movie 'Life in a Day' now available online. Who knew an average day could be so exciting? -- VIDEO

Filed under: Movies and tagged:

Last year, Director Kevin Macdonald and Producer Ridley Scott asked YouTube users to film the world around them on July 24, 2010 and submit the footage for a collaborative film project, Life in a Day.

The result was 4,500 hours of video from all over the world boiled down to a trim 94-minute image-blitz that is at times enlightening, serene, inspirational, and slightly disgusting. (A giraffe giving birth at 24:40 cannot be unseen.) After debuting at the Sundance Film Festival, it had a small, limited theatrical run and a handful of live screenings online. Now, however, the film is streaming for the world to see. READ FULL STORY »
