Fall TV Poll: What show should be shown the door next?

Allen-Gregory

Look at that face. Could you cancel that face? Well, if you’re Fox… maybe. Allen Gregory is still standing for the moment, thanks to a plum time-slot between The Simpsons and Family Guy, but can the freshman show hang on after so-so ratings? As one of several shows to premiere this past week, Gregory‘s fate hasn’t been decided yet. Add its name to the purgatorial list that includes high-profile newcomers Pan Am, Terra Nova, Once Upon a Time, and Last Man Standing. Keep reading to see which shows are in danger as we slide into November, and cast your vote for which should be canceled next.

Eddie Murphy discusses whether he'll curse during the Oscars and if he'll ever return to 'SNL' -- VIDEO

While there’s no way to know for certain what kind of Oscar host Eddie Murphy will be until the actual broadcast, he’s dropped some clues along the way while he’s been out promoting his new comedy, Tower Heist. From what he’s told reporters and fellow former Academy Awards hosts, including David Letterman and, today, Ellen DeGeneres, he’s going to be “the worst host ever” by not doing any musical numbers, wearing a powdered sky-blue tuxedo and losing control of his bladder. (In other words, the lone three things James Franco and Anne Hathaway didn’t do.)

Still, Murphy is uncertain of one aspect: Whether or not he’ll curse. During a visit to The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which airs today, the actor/comedian who had penchant for profane stand-up acts, said, “I don’t plan on cursing. I’m not going to, when I get to the Oscars… say ‘S–t!’ I’m going to say other things… every now and then, a curse may slip out. I’m not planning on it, but who knows?” Watch the preview clip below: READ FULL STORY »

Kim Kardashian heads to Australia to talk about her divorce. Yep, it's still annoying Down Under!

Making for quite possibly the worst thing to happen to Australia since those shark attacks in the summer of 2001 and Vegemite, Kim Kardashian made a stop in the land down under on the international leg of her Divorce Tour 2011.

Kardashian, with sister Khloe by her side, visited an Australian talk show where she cleared the air about a few things. Mainly, that her 72-day marriage was not a money-grubbing publicity stunt and she is selflessly not taking time for herself as to not disappoint her fans. That’s right PopWatchers, she’s doing this for us. Watch the interview below: READ FULL STORY »

This Week's Cover: How the Muppets were saved

Filed under: Movies and tagged: , ,

It’s time to play the music! It’s time to light the lights! It’s time to raise the curtain on…what could turn out to be the biggest pop culture comeback story of 2011. After more than a decade spent largely out of the spotlight, mostly doing whatever felt puppets do when no one is watching, Miss Piggy, Kermit the Frog, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo, and the rest of the Muppet repertory company are poised to return to the big screen on Nov. 23 in Disney’s splashy, star-studded musical comedy The Muppets.

In this week’s cover story, EW goes behind the scenes of this high-stakes effort to bring back one of the most revered franchises in Hollywood history — an effort spearheaded by the unlikely screenwriting duo of Jason Segel and Nick Stoller (Get Him to the Greek), two guys far better known for R-rated comedies than anything close to a family movie. Even execs at Disney, which has owned the Muppets since 2004, were initially surprised by Segel’s passion to make a kid-friendly movie with puppets. READ FULL STORY »

Gail Simmons blogs 'Top Chef: Texas' season premiere

Gail-Simmons

Texas was hot. This season was shot over the summer and it was the hottest summer on record in Texas in several years, so that was interesting timing, but it was also amazing. We were in three different cities in Texas and we had a lot of fun in all of them. We found a lot of local culture and we were able to play to that on the show. It just has a look and feel that is totally different than anything we have ever done before which lends itself to a lot of new creative pieces we were able to put into the show.

This is our ninth season, which we’re really proud of. After eight seasons in a format, I think we all felt that we wanted to up the stakes. We wanted to make it bigger and better because that’s what we strive for every year. We do that in a number of different ways this season, and you’ll see that as the season moves along, but specifically we thought it would be great to bring the viewer into the casting process and make that a really big piece of the show. It could be a little bit confusing because we’re trying something totally new but I think it really pays off in a great way. You get a different cast than you would have if it had been 100 percent just chosen by the producers.  READ FULL STORY »

X-Factor-Simon

If you can imagine, stuff happens at the taping of live TV shows that you — the viewing audience out there in the great USA — never really sees. But, call me a journalist, call me a spy — my job is to bring those moments, however completely and totally irrelevant, to you! So that’s what I’ve done here in this blog post, collecting together the things that you didn’t see on your screen during last night’s two-hour live episode of Fox’s talent competition The X Factor.

So what happened? The producers banned glow-in-the-dark posters! The judges bickered! The fog/smoke choked audience members! And, there were some crazy Canadians, stirring up trouble. Read on for all the details on those things and more inside the studio at X Factor last night:

'Top Chef: Texas' countdown: Yes, everything is bigger in Texas

Top Chef is back, and it’s cooking up a storm all throughout the Lone Star State! As one would expect, there’s a lot of mention of things being bigger in Texas — and it looks the competition is growing as well. As great as the All-Star season was last year, we’re excited to see new faces — a lot of new faces. The premiere tonight is a bit like a cattle slaughter: before the competition really begins, 29 cheftestants will have to fight it out over 16 spots in Top Chef’s manor-like San Antonio digs. Plus, later on, an entirely new bravotv.com web series — Top Chef: Last Chance Kitchen — hosted by head judge Tom Colicchio, will pit eliminated contestants against each other for a chance to get back in the game. Think Redemption Island, Top Chef-style.

So all you foodies out there, fasten your bibs and put your eating pants on! All season long, you can check back on EW.com (starting tonight!) for an exclusive weekly blog from judge Gail Simmons, and of course, recaps!

Fox has already renewed The X Factor for a second season, even though our laser light migraines are still pounding from last week’s first live performance show! Fox’s president of alternative entertainment called the pickup “a complete no-brainer.” Well, here is our possibly incomplete no-brainer list of what the show should keep and what it should ditch for next year. After you check out our suggestions, please add your own in the comments:

Roger Moore on Sean Connery: 'A good actor; it's a pity I can't understand what he's saying.'

It’s no surprise to find out that Roger Moore wasn’t a big fan of the last James Bond movie, Quantum of Solace. After all, Solace was an unfun, manic-depressive slog with a vaguely socially-conscious plot — the Bolivian water supply! — which is pretty much the cinematic geographic opposite of the Moore-era movies, which confronted somewhat more arcane social issues like bobsledding and space lasers. Still, it’s a kick to see the still-spry Moore call Solace “a long disjointed commercial” in an interview with Varsity, a Cambridge University student newspaper. Even more entertaining: When asked about the man who preceded him as 007, Moore puckishly replies, “Sean is a good actor; it’s a pity I can’t understand what he’s saying.”

Start the debate: Hilariously witty insult, or just an old English dude making fun of an old Scottish dude? I’m a Connery loyalist till I die, but hard to argue against the fact that Moore seems pretty freaking charming in real life. Now we just need to start getting excited for the moment twenty years from now when Pierce Brosnan gives an interview to an Oxford student newspaper and kicks off a bitter cross-court rivalry with his own predecessor, Timothy Dalton.
