Welcome Back, Eddie Murphy! The rise and fall and rise of America's most dangerous comic

Filed under: Movies and tagged: , ,

If you grew up watching Eddie Murphy chomping on a cigar as Gumby or getting gunned down in a hail of bullets as Buckwheat on Saturday Night Live, or better yet, dropping F-bombs as the cool-cat star of 48 Hrs., Trading Places, and Beverly Hills Cop, it’s hard to wrap your head around the fact that there’s a whole generation out there that has no clue just how funny and dirty he once was. When they think of Eddie Murphy — if they even think of him at all — it’s as the donkey from the kiddie franchise Shrek, or the once-dangerous comedian desperately searching for laughs in fart gags and fat suits in The Klumps.

The fact is, it’s been over a decade since Murphy made a decent movie — 1999′s Bowfinger – and way, way longer since he made a great one. But here’s the good news: it looks like Eddie Murphy is finally back. His latest comedy, Tower Heist, is doing solidly at the box office this weekend. And I’d bet that a good chunk of those ticket buyers are folks like me who had their fingers crossed that this would be The One — the movie where we finally get a glimpse of that old, dirty Eddie Murphy magic again.

'Saturday Night Live' recap: Turning back the clock on Charlie Day(light savings time)

snl-charlie-day2

While the glorious daylight savings time provided us all with an extra hour of sleep last night, it didn’t do much to make the evening any better for Charlie Day during last night’s Saturday Night Live. (Oh no, does this mean the Nightman has defeated Dayman once and for all?!)

It’s not to say that Day was a bad host, per se; he just unfortunately befell the same fate as countless other talented SNL hosts before him: Being underutilized and overshadowed. Besides, no one had a worse night on SNL than the Greeks or the Kardashians.

Then again, the ghost of Muammar Gaddafi (guess Fred Armisen wanted to revive the deceased Libyan dictator after all), who kicked off the episode, wasn’t doing too great either. Not only was he in hell, where the FreeCreditReport.com band puts on nightly shows, but he’d apparently lost all track of time. Armisen’s Gadaffi griped, “I got murdered pretty bad last week”, which was only half true. He got murdered pretty bad all right, but it was definitely longer than a week ago.

Which begged the question, was this opening skit really all that necessary? Was Armisen’s imitation of the outrageously controversial figure such a hit with fans that they couldn’t not do it? Wouldn’t something along the lines of a skit about Occupy Wall Street (which had only a single mention in Weekend Update) have felt fresher and funnier? Alas, for presumably his last time, Armisen’s Gadaffi announced live from New York, it was Saturday Night. See for yourself: READ FULL STORY »

Charlie Day hosts tonight's 'Saturday Night Live': Talk about it here!

Who’s the wild card now, Charlie?!

Returning from a three-week hiatus, Saturday Night Live is all new tonight with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Charlie Day as host and Maroon 5 (and their reluctantly shirtless lead singer Adam Levine) as musical guests.

Day’s first go as an SNL host couldn’t be coming at a better time, really. Before the break, the back-to-back Ben Stiller and Anna Faris episodes felt lackluster at best (Melissa McCarthy set the bar painstakingly high), so the show desperately needs someone to give them a jolt of energy to get back on track. Anyone familiar with the manic sense of humor that makes Day a standout in ensembles (like on Sunny) and a scene-stealer in mainstream comedy (like in Going the Distance and Horrible Bosses), would argue he is just the man –nay, the Dayman– for the job.

If SNL utilizes Day’s zany, pitch-perfect comedic timing, they could have another excellently off-kilter host like McCarthy or Zach Galifianakis on their hands. I predict they’ll pair up Day as much as possible with his Bosses co-star Jason Sudeikis (and understandably so, as the two have great chemistry, even just in the promos), but hopefully they don’t spread him too thin. And they should definitely try to sneak him in for an SNL commercial, because when it comes to selling a product, he’s really, very good at it. Meee-ow.

Are you excited to see Charlie Day get his first shot as hosting Saturday Night Live, PopWatchers? Let us know how you feel and then check in throughout the show to tell us how you think he’s doing. Then be sure to come back Sunday morning for a full SNL recap.

'Supernatural' react: Were you satisfied by the 'make up' scene?

My friend, Adam, and I usually have similar opinions about Supernatural episodes. But in a rare occurrence, the final scene of last night’s episode, which took the brothers to the psychic capital of the United States, had us split. I liked it; he didn’t. Let me explain.

After “breaking up” at the end of last week’s episode, Sam and Dean crossed paths in this episode after, apparently, being apart for ten days. I was so glad we didn’t have to watch anything from those ten days. As we’ve all learned (and, I guess, Supernatural writers have learned, too) the brothers belong side-by-side, even if they spend the whole time giving each other the stink eye.

They met up in Lily Dale, where psychics were biting the dust in mysterious ways. (It turned out to be at the hands of a psycho ghost sister who was being controlled by a jealousy-ridden, creepy pawn shop owner.) The storyline, while fun in its own right, also left Sam and Dean, the masters of secret keeping, to contend with an entire town of people who can see right through BS. Clever! READ FULL STORY »

Louis CK's next comedy special: It's not TV, it's NOT HBO. It's online.

Comedian Louis CK visited Conan O’Brien last night during the talkshow host’s final night in New York, and the two swapped stories about the early days, when the no-name red-head took over for David Letterman and hired the struggling comic as one of his first writers. “You saved my life, and you gave me a career,” said Louis, who’s since done rather well for himself.

Louis CK sits atop the stand-up comedy landscape, and his FX show has introduced his unique comic perspective to millions of viewers. It will be interesting to see, then, if his next venture will be a success. After joking with O’Brien about suicide etiquette, George W. Bush, and Americans’ bigotry towards Mexicans, Louis announced plans for his next big comedy special. READ FULL STORY »

This Week on Stage: 'Funny Girl' postponed, 'Other Desert Cities' opens on Broadway

The current Broadway buzz isn’t so much about what’s happening next year (a David Mamet-penned prison drama starring Patti LuPone and Laurie Metcalf) as what’s not: Producers announced last night that the Lauren Ambrose-led revival of Funny Girl (scheduled to debut in early 2012) has been postponed indefinitely. The Matthew Broderick starrer Nice Work if You Can Get It is already set to take its space at New York’s Imperial Theatre.

But that’s enough rain on your parade. Our reviewers checked out three solid productions this week. Read the highlights below.  READ FULL STORY »

'Tintin' website to hold Americans over while the world enjoys the real thing

Tintin

Americans aren’t used to waiting for anything, but Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin is already playing in Europe and it is expected to open in about 40 countries before it finally opens in the United States on Dec. 21. Put it this way, only Pakistan and Brazil have to wait longer than us Yanks! (Pakistan!!) Let’s not hold a grudge, though. Focus on the positive. The new Tintin website features snippets of John Williams’ new score for the film, and it is positively johnwilliams-y.

Not to belabor the point, but it is fairly unusual for a huge Hollywood film to get a two-month head-start abroad before it finally opens stateside. There’s no denying that Tintin, the creation of the Belgian cartoonist Hergé, has a larger fan-base in Europe, but it’s not winning any new American fans by making us wait. To cheer you up in the interim, watch this behind-the-scene featurette embedded on the new Tintin site: READ FULL STORY »

Remember, remember… the something… of something.

Turns out, tomorrow is Guy Fawkes Day. Of course, if you’ve visited or attended any of the Occupy Wall Street rallies or protests, every day has sort of looked like Guy Fawkes Day. READ FULL STORY »
