Alan Rickman goes from Hogwarts to Broadway's 'Seminar' -- EXCLUSIVE FIRST LOOK

Alan Rickman may have hung up his wand as Hogwarts potions professor Severus Snape, but he’s yet to relinquish his fictional teaching degree. For his first major post-Harry Potter outing, the 65-year-old British actor is returning to Broadway as an ornery writing great who hosts a private workshop for fledgling novelists in Theresa Rebeck’s new comedy Seminar. His character, Leonard, is ruthless, brilliant, unorthodox, and prone to giving writing advice like, “I don’t have to go past the first five words because I already know enough and I don’t give a s—.” Leonard is also, if you haven’t already guessed, just as insecure as his young students, who are played by Lily Rabe, Jerry O’Connell, Hettienne Park, and Hamish Linklater.

Seminar, which is currently in previews at the John Golden Theatre, opens on Nov. 20. See more photos below! READ FULL STORY »

A look at Diane Sawyer's interview with Gabrielle Giffords -- VIDEO

Filed under: Television, TV and tagged: ,

In her new book Gabby: A Story of Hope and Courage, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords documents her story of strength and resilience after surviving an assassination attempt back in January. Giffords and her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, also recently opened up about her miraculous recovery to ABC’s Diane Sawyer.

If you don’t mind getting teary-eyed at your desk at work, watch the preview below, which features footage of Giffords’ inspirational and often painful recovery, as well as interviews with Giffords’ family (“I think Gabby’s got a message now that exceeds the political one,” says her mother) and the Congresswoman herself. Check out the video: READ FULL STORY »

Rick Perry delivers Letterman's Top Ten List: 'Oops!' he did it again

Who could have guessed that in this Republican GOP circus, it would be he-man Rick Perry who would deliver the comedy gem that late-night comics would come to cherish? (Herman Cain had better start singing about pizza or numbers some more if he wants to reclaim his crown.)

Alas, there’s Perry’s “oops” heard ’round the world, a moment that Jon Stewart kissed the heavens and thanked the comedy gods for. Wanting to save face (and possibly his entire campaign), the new-found comedy treasure stopped by The Late Show with David Letterman to deliver the Top Ten List. Watch the “Top Ten Rick Perry Excuses” below. Not only does the Texas governor actually have good timing (which, let’s face it, probably would have come in more handy Wednesday night), but he’s a good sport about the whole thing. Better yet, he even abides by the old comedy rule of three. Well, almost. But, hey, if this whole comedy/politics thing doesn’t pan out for Perry, it looks like he’d make a pretty good Dancing With the Stars contestant. See for yourself: READ FULL STORY »

A Brief History of Videogame Movies: From 'TRON' to 'Super Mario Brothers' to (maybe) 'Assassin's Creed'

In just a few short decades, videogames have evolved from the primordial sludge of Pong into a vibrant culture-defining art form, capable of producing crowd-pleasing action thrillers (like Uncharted), thought-provoking epics (Red Dead Redemption), brain-teasing puzzles (Portal), quasi-existential choose-your-own-adventure character studies (Fallout, Mass Effect), and pure adrenaline speed candy (Super Smash Brothers). Unfortunately, none of that is even remotely evident in the list of films adapted from videogames. But Hollywood keeps trying to make game-based movies happen, and in light of Vulture’s recent report about a potential Assassin’s Creed film, we figured now was a good time to look back on the Not-So-Special Relationship between videogames and movies. Watch the whole sordid history below: READ FULL STORY »

'The X Factor' As Not Seen On TV: Cheer Up, Paula

The fans were all a-Twittah last night at The X Factor’s Xanadome. Not only did fireball Willow Smith prove that even pretending to sing is not necessary if you want to have a career as a singer, but the overall crowd favorite went home after a (barely) superior last chance performance. As Nicole Scherzinger would probably say, it was wild maaan.

Last night’s show was ultimately very long and drawn out, and the audience didn’t get to spend much time with the busy judges. Still, as always, there were things going on behind the scenes that you simply could not see on TV. Mainly the coming undone of Paula Abdul. Read on for more from inside the studio at X Factor last night: READ FULL STORY »

On the scene: 'Twilight' fans line up FIVE DAYS before 'Breaking Dawn' red carpet premiere

TwilightMOMS

Dedicated, borderline obsessive Twilight fans have been a much-discussed phenomenon ever since Robert Pattinson donned his first pair of fangs, but even the most fanatical of the Cullenites would be impressed by the flock currently gathered outside of L.A. Live. Starting at 6 a.m. PT on Thursday, Summit began admitting fans into the massive tent city constructed outside of L.A. Live’s Nokia Theater, where they will wait anxiously for the chance to see their favorite stars at The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 1 red carpet premiere – on Monday. Hundreds of fans are currently napping under the first tent, while the crew frantically assembles another to house hundreds more before the rain hits.  READ FULL STORY »

The news that Billy Crystal has returned to host the Academy Awards for the ninth time — and the first time since 2004 — brings back a flood of memories for many Oscar junkies: His trademark opening musical medleys and movie spoofs. His easy, joking rapport with A-list movie stars. His nimble ability to play both to the room of Hollywood industry insiders and to the worldwide television audience of movie fans.

And for anyone following the PR fustercluck that’s befallen the Oscars this week, another thought springs to mind, at least for me: Billy is pretty much the only person for the job. READ FULL STORY »

Is Howard Stern a good fit for 'America's Got Talent'?

America’s Got Talent may be rated TV-14, but it’s about to get some TV-MA boosted into its system. Earlier today, EW confirmed that shock jock Howard Stern is in talks to replace outgoing judge Piers Morgan on the hit NBC reality series. It’s a surprising — and, for some, exciting — prospect: The talent show is geared towards families, one demographic Stern seems to actively avoid.

But is it as strange a fit as it seems? Though Talent might have that TV-14 rating, the show is still filled with acts that range anywhere from disgustingly offensive to oddly appealing. And if there’s anyone who could be described as both disgustingly offensive and oddly appealing, it’s Stern, a man who regularly welcomes freak-show talk — and boobs, which Talent has plenty of — on his show. Take that, Kate and Pippa Middleton! Back to the drawing board, Beyoncé and Solange Knowles! As part of its annual Best Dressed Issue, Vogue has named Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen its best dressed siblings for 2011. It’s just another award to add to the mantel for the perennial Anna Wintour darlings. Not only have they been setting style trends since they were in rompers, the 25-year-old twins have established themselves as in-demand fashion designers with their lines The Row and Elizabeth & James (the latter is named in part after their emerging starlet sister). So other familial fashionistas made the list? READ FULL STORY »

'The Hunger Games' full-length trailer to debut on Monday: What do you hope to see?

This upcoming Monday, the first full-length trailer for The Hunger Games will debut during the Good Morning America broadcast. May the odds be ever in your favor that you’ll get a glimpse of what you’re dying to see, because, let’s face it, there’s plenty.

Since this summer’s teaser trailer (all one second of it) left much to the imagination, there’s a veritable check list of things fans can hope to see come Monday morning. Will the Hunger Games trailer follow in the footsteps of the The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo‘s first (official) intoxicating trailer and go with quick snippets? I’m envisioning Katniss running while we get fast-paced glimpses at the selection, the ceremonies, or the harrowing, pulse-pounding action of the Games themselves. Now imagine them all set to Rue’s lullaby or “The Hanging Tree”? (Insert goosebumps here.) READ FULL STORY »
