Between receiving an… ummm… interesting call from friend Marilyn Manson and discussing the latest 90210 drama, Chow let loose some interesting revelations. What did she have to say about ex-boyfriend Mark Wahlberg? Read on…

Bob Costas kills Jerry Sandusky with kindness. Are sports keeping Costas from greater things?

A few weeks ago, Brian Williams made a brief appearance on NBC’s Football Night in America broadcast to promote his new show, Rock Center. He and Bob Costas went back and forth about the new show, and their playful banter made me wonder if, in a slightly different world, their roles could have been reversed. I mean, this wasn’t Walter Cronkite sitting opposite Chris Berman. Both men are talented, likable, and respected, and it’s not impossible to imagine Williams in the sports field, covering Super Bowls and Olympics, and Costas anchoring the evening news. In fact, Costas is the rare television journalist who remains in sports only because he’s chosen to. The man had a great late-night talk show, Later, for seven years in the late 1980s and 1990s, and his HBO show, though sports-focused, was as thorough and provocative as any other news magazine in television.

So I was not surprised to see Costas on Rock Center last night, interviewing Jerry Sandusky, the Penn State football coach who is at the center of the sex abuse scandal. Yes, this is a sports-related story, and likely, Costas’ connections and reputation helped land the exclusive interview for NBC. But clearly, this is a huge, national story that promises to stain the front pages and the evening news for months to come. NBC was not about to give it to Costas simply because he knows what an equipment room smells like. READ FULL STORY »

Can you tell this man how to get to 'Sesame Street'? They're looking for him!

Sesame Street has handled a lot of tricky tasks over the past 42 years, from teaching tykes the alphabet to explaining television to Keith Staskiewicz, but nothing quite like this before. Today’s Sesame Street PopWatch is brought to you by the letter M, for the Missing original Gordon.

In an open letter on their website, the Sesame Workshop explains that they’ve been on the hunt for an actor who played Gordon in an un-aired test pilot that was shown to a focus group of children in the summer of 1969. While all of the other Gordons (played by Matt Robinson, Hal Miller, and Roscoe Orman) are accounted for, they can’t seem to find the mystery man who originated the role of the beloved science teacher. No one, not even Big Bird (Caroll Spinney) knows who is he is… and Big Bird knows everything. READ FULL STORY »

Gabrielle Giffords and the healing power of music: A must-watch clip from last night's '20/20'

If you missed Diane Sawyer’s 20/20 interview with Gabrielle Giffords, you can watch it in its entirety here. But if you watch only one clip, make it the one below. Because Giffords’ husband, Mark Kelly, knew she would one day ask what she went through during her early recovery, he filmed it. In that footage, we see the healing power of music: Giffords, who still requires hours of daily therapy helping her recall words, sings along to Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin’” and Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.” As one of her therapists explains of survivors of brain injuries, “Music is accessed in many different areas of the brain that aren’t designated for language, and they can retrieve the lyrics through another side of the brain to get words back.”  READ FULL STORY »

Matthew Weiner knows how 'Mad Men' will end. Hint: It won't be like 'Sopranos'

We’re closer to the end of Mad Men then we are to the beginning. Ever since creator Matthew Weiner and AMC finally reached a compromise on the Great Showrunner Contract Negotiation of 2011, Weiner has been declaring pretty definitively that the show will run for a total of seven seasons. That’s still a lot of Mad Men — especially if the show keeps taking 18 months between seasons, we’ll be luxuriating in Don Draper’s beautiful melancholy until 2015 — but Weiner already has a sense of how he’s going to end the show. In a freewheeling conversation with Curb Your Enthusiasm‘s Jeff Garlin at L.A.’s Largo, Weiner said that he knows how the show will end. “I always felt like it would be the experience of human life. And human life has a destination. It doesn’t mean Don’s gonna die. What I’m looking for, and how I hope to end the show, is like… It’s 2011. Don Draper would be 84 right now. I want to leave the show in a place where you have an idea of what it meant and how it’s related to you.” READ FULL STORY »

Do you ever feel just a little bit disappointed in the future we’ve found ourselves living in? Even though we’re over a decade into the new millennium, there are still no flying cars, no moon colonies, and no robot butlers. Food is not injected directly into our veins. People over the age of 30 are still allowed to wander around sucking up valuable oxygen. [Ed note: They'll never catch me after Carrousel!] The most exciting technological leap in the last couple decades was the invention of the smartphone, which has created a terrifying new generation of teenaged mutant freaks with extra-powerful thumbs. But don’t worry, everyone: the boys in the back room at Google have a top-secret laboratory, and according to the New York Times, they’re working hard to make the fantasies of Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke into a reality. READ FULL STORY »

Looking at the box office reports for Justin Timberlake’s last three films, the Los Angeles Times noticed a trend: They’ve all done bigger foreign than domestic business. Bad Teacher, his highest live-action domestic grosser (and that includes The Social Network — how is that possible?) earned $100.3 million at home and $115.9 million abroad. Friends With Benefits had a larger spread, with $55.8 million domestic versus $93.7 million foreign. And so far, In Time’s receipts are following suit: $30.6 million domestic and $53.1 million foreign. How would you explain it?  READ FULL STORY »
