Disney’s most famous paperboys will be peddling their “papes” on the Great White Way. Producers revealed today that the stage adaptation of Newsies — the 1992 Christian Bale-led film musical about a 19th century newsboy strike — will follow its successful world premiere at N.J.’s Paper Mill Playhouse (see our original review) with a limited 101 show run at the Main Stem’s Nederlander Theater next year. Previews begin on Mar. 15, with an official opening night scheduled for Mar. 29 — 12 days before the film’s 20th birthday. READ FULL STORY »

'Real Housewives of Beverly Hills': Was the tea party scene the most uncomfortable of the season?

“The Giggy is up!” Taylor Armstrong declared on last night’s Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. This statement came during the midpoint of the most uncomfortable confrontation of the series franchise yet, eclipsing even the Richards’ sisters limo tussle from the season 1 finale. Lisa Vanderpump may have invited her 90210 pals and Taylor (note the distinction) over for a spot of tea, but Taylor had other plans. She tore into the British crumpet for any number of reasons while the other ladies looked on in silent horror. Our own Karen Valby called it “a deeply weird, troubling hour of TV” and “a relentless look at Taylor barreling off the rails.” But how did the afternoon escalate from Earl Grey to abuse revelations? Joseph Gordon-Levitt the latest celeb to receive YouTube invitation from a fan

Filed under: Movies, News and tagged:

Inspired by Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s poignant role in 50/50, 26-year-old Lindsay Miller, who was diagnosed with pancreatic neuroendocrine cancer in 2010, has jumped on this year’s hottest Internet trend and created a video asking Gordon-Levitt to go out on a date with her. Only time will tell whether she gets shut down like the guy who begged Betty White or validated for life like Corporal Kelsey DeSantis, who successfully invited Justin Timberlake to her Marine Corps Ball. In the meanwhile, you can see Miller’s video plea below:  READ FULL STORY »

Marcel the Shell with shoes on gets even more adorable in sequel

Filed under: Books and tagged: , ,

Since the debut of his ridiculously adorable viral video in 2010, Marcel the Shell has achieved two of his biggest goals in life: He’s published a beautifully illustrated biography, and now it looks like he owns a dog (although it terrifies him). Finally, we have a sequel from creators Dean Fleischer-Camp and Saturday Night Live alum Jenny Slate, who provides Marcel’s signature, pipsqueak voice. In it, we get some burning questions answered about our favorite shod shell: What does he use as a bed? What does he use as a car? Does he have any siblings? Find out below: READ FULL STORY »

Behind Robert Downey Jr.'s tribute brainstorm: How do Mel Gibson and Charles Manson fit in? -- VIDEO

In a new video, Funny or Die video goes “behind the scenes” with Mel Gibson, Jamie Foxx, and Garry Shandling as they gathered to toss around ideas for a Robert Downey Jr. tribute at last month’s 25th Annual American Cinematheque Award Ceremony. Foxx quickly highjacked the meeting, going off about Downey’s Oscar-nominated role in Tropic Thunder before offering a Downey impression complete with the actor’s trademark gesticulations. Along the way, Downey’s checkered past was addressed, Jodie Foster got a shout-out, and Gibson even offered a few winks at his beleaguered reputation with an “Oy vey!” and a throwaway line about RuPaul that’s worth the price of admission alone. Check out the full video after the jump. READ FULL STORY »

'How I Met Your Mother': Is this the end of Robin as we know her? Nay, knew her.

HIMYM-Robin

“What do you even like about me?” That was the question Robin posed, at two different critical times to the two men who love her, Barney and Kevin, during last night’s gut-wrenching episode of How I Met Your Mother. [SPOILERS AHEAD IF YOU STILL HAVEN'T WATCHED]

For years that was an easy question for any HIMYM fan to answer. Because, in spite of being from Canada (as Barney once cried, “Why are you guys even a country?”), Robin Scherbatsky (or Robin Sparkles/Robsy Wobsy/Scherbs, if you will) is a loyal friend, a hard worker who has paid her dues, a fun roommate (at least, if you like someone who doesn’t throw empty milk cartons away), and, depending on your feelings on her gun fixation, a damn good shot.

But many fans, myself included, had to re-examine their feelings for Robin after what she did to Barney — and let’s face it, eventually Kevin — last night. READ FULL STORY »

Glenn Beck orders up cartoons for GBTV

Glenn Beck has long prided himself as a comedian, and his critics have often lampooned him as a cartoon. So I suppose it makes perfect sense that GBTV, his live streaming video network, is developing a new animated comedy series. GBTV and Icebox, which boasts writers who’ve worked on shows including The Simpsons, South Park, and King of the Hill, are currently discussing various concepts. “Many of our writers welcome the opportunity to create shows the whole family can watch,” Tal Vigderson, Icebox’s managing director, said in a statement. “This venture lets us take a little break from shocking and offending our audience.” READ FULL STORY »

Kim Kardashian defends her marriage -- pre-split -- in new 'Marie Claire' cover story

It used to be starlets couldn’t do bridal photo shoots before walking down the aisle for fear of the wedding being called off before the issue hit stands. Now maybe they’ll have to not give cover story interviews about their marriages until at least three months has passed. Kim Kardashian graces Marie Claire‘s December issue and, in an interview conducted a few weeks after her wedding to Kris Humphries, defended their rush to the altar: “We felt like, ‘Why wait?’” she said. “It’s fun to have a partner who understands your life and lets you be you.” She insisted everything was fine between her and Humphries despite tabloids already reporting problems: “I feel like where we’re at right now is the best time in my life,” she said. She proclaimed her faith in their bond: “I’m not worried about him at all,” she said. “We have a lot of trust, and I don’t think either of us would do anything to break that. It makes life so easy. He’s such a good guy; he is so down-to-earth, and it’s such a reality check. He is a normal guy, and I just want to chill out and be normal and not get glammed up all the time. He gets it. Sometimes my life can be really intimidating for people, but he allows me to work and do what I’ve gotta do.”  READ FULL STORY »

Contrarian Corner: In defense of Adam Sandler

Filed under: Movies and tagged: ,

Despite the snarky blogosphere’s best efforts, I just can’t be convinced to dislike Adam Sandler, and I’m not sorry about it. Sure, his last few movies — including Jack and Jill, which debuted last weekend — have been almost unspeakably terrible, but I just simply can’t help but respect the man.

Maybe this is because, as a box office junkie, I tend to judge actors based on their drawing power, rather than their craft. Looking at the numbers, it’s impossible not to think Sandler is brilliant.

The man has headlined twelve $100+ million comedies in the last 13 years, and he’s produced a number of other successful comedies like Zookeeper and Paul Blart: Mall Cop through his own Happy Madison production company. Basically, he makes whatever movie he wants — and rakes in heaps of cash doing just that, regardless of quality. READ FULL STORY »
