Ricky Gervais says he's returning to the Globes to 'shut up all those f--ing idiots'

Ricky Gervais took to his blog to discuss his decision to return as Golden Globes host in 2012. “It was a tough decision to be honest,” he wrote. Of course, he wasn’t concerned about Angelina Jolie’s icy stare, he was more concerned he “couldn’t improve on last year.” He said his list of pros and cons included the consideration that “some people would be uncomfortable with me being host. (This was a pro by the way.)”

But enough with the gravitas! Gervais proved he hasn’t lost his impish spirit with one awesomely defiant statement: “What actually tipped the balance and made me say yes, was the fact that it would shut up all those f—ing idiots who said that I’d never be invited back.” He then wondered, “Is that the wrong reason to do something?” No, Ricky. It most certainly is not. Oh, but there’s more… READ FULL STORY »

National UnFriend Day: Are you playing?

Today, Nov. 17, is the second annual Jimmy Kimmel-sanctioned National UnFriend Day, where he gives you permission to UnFriend people on Facebook who you’re not actually friends with in real life — without any guilt.

Do you still feel Friend-related anxiety? I used to feel bad for not accepting requests from people I’ve never had contact with but who are Friends with my Friends. Then, you experience real-life drama, and that puts that kind of thing into perspective. Also, you talk to your Friends and realize they only accepted that request because they assumed their Friends who’d already Friended that person actually knew him or her (and, of course, they didn’t). Talk about feeling green with envy: In the promo spot for this weekend’s brand-new Saturday Night Live, cast member Vanessa Bayer gets to talk Muppets, How I Met Your Mother, and have a fake-out make-out session with first-time host Jason Segel. Yep, that’s pretty cool, alright. Watch the full clip below. (HIMYM fans, doesn’t Segel’s perm look awfully reminiscent of a young Marshall?) READ FULL STORY »

Cougar Town may not be on the air right now (let’s just say we’ve been spending ample time with Big Carl to ease the pain), but the cul-de-sac crew is, thankfully, still part of the prime time television line-up. In fact, just last night Cougar Town fans could find Laurie sipping coffee at the very same outdoor stand that Happy Endings‘ Dave, Max, and Brad were visiting! (Is it just us, or would Max and Laurie make spectacular friends? Sorry, Penny! Pennnny Caaaaannnn!) Check it out: READ FULL STORY »

'South Park' tries to go for laughs with the Penn State scandal -- VIDEO

South Park wasted no time in getting around to the sexual abuse scandal which has shaken the foundation of Penn State to its core. But the questions synonymous with Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s button-pushing series — “Too soon?” and “Did they go too far this time?” — will no doubt be asked again after last night’s episode.

The episode, titled “The Poor Kid,” featured (a still alive) Kenny and his siblings being taken out of their parents custody when they got in trouble with the law. (All together now: Simpsons did it!) But South Park dared to cross the line once again and attempted to make the decidedly unfunny Penn State scandal funny by skewering the very people who attempt to make light of the horrific news. In this case, it was the kids’ social worker, a wildly inappropriate jokester named Mr. Adams. READ FULL STORY »

'Out100' issue names Kathy Griffin Entertainer of the Year, Jesse Tyler Ferguson Artist of the Year

In celebration of the 17th anniversary of its Out100 issue, Out revealed its four commemorative covers, which highlight — among others — Entertainer of the Year Kathy Griffin and Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who has been declared their Artist of the Year. (Pictured right, with fellow cover models Andrej Pejic and Larry Kramer.) The issue, which honors the men and women who made notable strides throughout 2011 in the LGBT community, features a list that includes Adam Lambert (who previously met with controversy following his appearance on Out‘s 2009 issue), Chaz Bono, Dustin Lance Black, Andy Cohen, Tim Gunn, Don Lemon, Brad Goreski, Roland Emmerich, and EW’s own Jess Cagle.

Griffin said of her long-standing relationship with gay men, “We have each other’s back … I was beyond a nerd [in school]. I was that girl who went to the dance with a gay guy, but he didn’t know he was gay yet. I asked four guys to the Sadie Hawkins dance, and they all said ‘No.’ Do you know how embarrassing that is? And then, one adorable gay man who just happened to be in Fiddler on the Roof with me said ‘Yes.’ We’ve been friends ever since.” Modern Family‘s Ferguson (who calls the Emmy-winning sitcom “a cultural touchstone for gay marriage”), on the other hand, joked about his Artist of the Year title, “Jane Lynch must have said, ‘I don’t want it this year, stop showering me with praise, please give it to someone else. And I was, like, fourth on the Someone Else list.”

The Out100 issue hits stands on Nov. 22.

Spike announces Video Game Awards nominees: Batman, 'Zelda,' and 'Bastion' dominate

Categories: Videogames
Batman-Arkham-City

Spike’s Video Game Awards don’t exactly have the cachet of the Oscars, the Emmys, the Video Music Awards, or your town’s annual hot dog-eating contest. But videogames are an important part of our cultural landscape, and there’s a lot to appreciate in the just-released list of VGA nominations. The five games select for Game of the Year might not be “original” in the classical sense — there are two sequels, a threequel, a fivequel, and a hexakaidecaquel — but taken together, they form a rather inspiring panorama of the current videogame moment. Portal 2 is a brain-teasing puzzle, while Uncharted 3 was a better-than-Hollywood action spectacle, but both games share a sly sense of humor. Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword represent two polaric spheres of the RPG genre — the former a maximalist go-anywhere romp, the latter a minimalist architectural poem. (I’m in hour 16 of Skyward Sword now — expect a review this weekend.) And Batman: Arkham City was a relentless revelation, absorbing decades of pop mythology into one vivid open-world experience. EW’s Bite of the Night for Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2011

We at EW scoured the TV line-up last night to find the best one-liners from your favorite shows. It wasn’t the fierce folks on America’s Next Top Model, the kooky Pritchett-Dunphy clan, nor the ghoulish guys and gals on American Horror Story who offered up last night’s best soundbite. Instead, the frantic friends from Happy Endings brought the funny — and an evergreen Kanye West reference to boot! Read on…

Selena Gomez talks Justin Bieber, and her inability to get him to pull up his pants

In an interview airing today on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Selena Gomez admits dealing with that paternity suit filed against her boyfriend Justin Bieber was crazy “to say the least,” but Ellen doesn’t stop there with the sensitive questions. “I think you have influence, and I think you can tell him to pull his pants up,” DeGeneres says to applause. “I really can’t,” Gomez answers. “I’ve told him I don’t get it.” What does he say then? “He laughs,” Gomez says. Watch a clip below.

Ellen also asks what Selena does to compete with Justin’s grand romantic gestures — like renting out the Staples Center for a dinner date. “My favorite is that mine don’t get out,” she says. (Good answer!) “That’s my favorite. Obviously, that’s very sweet, but I like to do things that are a little bit different, and he always gets mad because everything he does gets out.”  READ FULL STORY »
