EW’s Bite of the Night for Thursday, Nov. 17, 2011

We at EW scoured the TV line-up last night to find the best one-liners from your favorite shows. It was a great night for comedy… and pizza apparently. Jimmy Kimmel, Amy Farrah Fowler, and The Office‘s under-the-radar genius Kevin all chipped in some chuckle-worthy soundbites that revealed their inner dialogues in a delightfully enlightening way. Read on…

Michael Fassbender's inspiration for 'Prometheus' role: Olympic diver Greg Louganis

The cult of Michael Fassbender hasn’t reached Gosling-level proportions just yet. But the Irish-German actor has four big films hitting in the next year — including a relentlessly nude performance in Shame — so I think it’s safe to say that the Fassbender train is leaving the station, so everybody better hop aboard, toot-tooot! In a new interview with MTV News, Fassbender teases his role in next year’s mysterious Prometheus, which you’ll recall is the Alien non-sequel that nevertheless sounds a lot like an Alien sequel. Fassbender explains that he watched a lot of Blade Runner to prepare for his role as an android. (Which could mean we’ll see Michael Fassbender channeling Rutger Hauer, and my head just exploded.) But Fassbender points out, “Greg Louganis was my first inspiration. I figured that I’d sort of base my physicality roughly around him.” Watch the video: READ FULL STORY »

National Unfriend Day: Biz Markie gives Facebook the piano rap treatment on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!'

Yesterday was the second annual National Unfriend Day, organized by funnyman Jimmy Kimmel, and Biz Markie stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live! to do a real-time update on his 1989 classic “Just a Friend.” Drew Carey, Kaley Cuoco, and Paul Scheer joined in with some “your friend” riffs on the “yo’ mama” jokes at the start of the original video. Markie’s cape and Mozart wig also made cameos. See the trailblazing piano rap anthem in its 2011 incarnation below. READ FULL STORY »

'Breaking Dawn' midnight screening: Blood, sweat, and tears (and, of course, a movie)

Some said they arrived at 5 p.m., a full seven hours before they could hand over their ticket — purchased two weeks ago — to get into last night’s sold-out midnight screening of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 1. Or the sold-out 12:06 a.m. screening…or the sold-out 12:11 a.m. screening…or the sold-out 12:16 a.m. screening. The United Artists Kaufman Astoria theater in New York City, like so many other theaters around the country, attempted to accommodate Twi-hard demand with a multitude of options slotted well past midnight. (A tip of the hat to any movie theater employee that works on nights like these. It cannot be easy.)

As a newbie to the Twilight midnight showing experience (and oh, is it an experience), I arrived at 10:30 p.m. It was pretty obvious I had zero chance at getting a good seat — the lobby and theater area (pictured) were packed to the brim with (mostly) girls in their late teens and early 20s (though I spotted a few reluctant boyfriends here and there), all out far past reasonable bedtimes and curfews. 'The X Factor' on the scene: A look behind all that Astro and Stacy drama

Rihanna-X-Factor

Last night’s The X Factor show concluded with all sorts of unexpected, juicy, normally seen-on-Bravo drama. It started with Astro prefacing his survival performance with these words: “I really don’t want to perform. I feel like it’s unnecessary.” And then moments later, the 15-year-old rapper told America, “I feel like if you’re going to put me in the bottom two, I don’t want to perform for people who don’t want me here.” This comment effectively turned the entire Xanadome against the kid. But I want to begin this on-the-scene recap several minutes before that and tell you how everything you didn’t see on TV went down. READ FULL STORY »

Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore: A marriage made (and unmade?) on Twitter

It’s easy to forget that nobody really cared about Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher a few years ago. The intrinsic tabloid appeal of their May/December coupling faded away soon after their 2005 wedding. They weren’t movie stars, really. Kutcher’s only noteworthy leading man role came in the forgettably successful rom-com What Happens in Vegas; he was mostly working behind the scenes, as a producer of Beauty and the Geek and as the grinning face at the end of every Punk’d sketch. Moore hadn’t seemed particularly interested in acting since the ’90s (with the noteworthy exception of her non-comeback role in the Charlie’s Angels sequel). More importantly, they just weren’t that interesting. They seemed like a normal couple, a pair of functional adults in a happy relationship, with Bruce Willis reinvented as a kind of charming godfather uncle. You could imagine them inhabiting a quiet domestic existence in the outer reaches of showbiz, happy together forever, living off sitcom royalties and perfume ads and camera commercials and cameo roles and all the other ways that formerly successful people keep making a living in Hollywood.

Then they joined Twitter. READ FULL STORY »

Benetton's Unhate Campaign: A worthy cause, or just a shocking new way to sell cardigans?

Digitally manipulated smooches have officially taken the Internet by storm. The Italian fashion company Benetton unleashed their controversial “Unhate Campaign,” on Wednesday, and the initial feedback has been mixed at best. Unhate consists of a series of advertisements that includes, among others, images of President Obama kissing Chinese leader Hu Jianto, Obama kissing Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez, and Pope Benedict XVI kissing Sheikh Ahmed Mohamed el-Tayeb. On Thursday, the latter was pulled following protests from the Vatican. (You can view it below.)

The message of the campaign seems to be pretty simple — people of different race, orientation, and creed should not hate each other. On that, I completely agree. What I don’t understand is what any of this has to do with Benetton clothing, and why they chose images of kissing world leaders to promote equality. READ FULL STORY »

NBC's 'Munsters' pilot: Help 'Pushing Daisies' creator Bryan Fuller cast it!

Now that you’ve had time to think about NBC ordering a pilot of Bryan Fuller’s remake of the classic ’60s TV show The Munsters, let’s help him cast it. According to EW’s James Hibberd, Fuller imagines an hour-long series exploring how the monster house came about that will have a darker and less campy feel than the black-and-white original.

My first thought was Spartacus‘ Lucy Lawless as Lily and Sons of Anarchy‘s Ron Perlman or Jeff Goldblum as Herman, while Sandra Gonzalez picked Chuck‘s Yvonne Strahovski as Marilyn, and Kate Ward pitched Danny DeVito as Grandpa and Bill Hader as her Herman. Without knowing exactly what ages Fuller is thinking, and how much makeup he wants to use, the options are endless. So brainstorm away!

Tyler Perry explains Kim Kardashian 'Marriage Counselor' Kasting: 'It would be very responsible of her to be a part of this film'

Tyler-Perry

Remember that time a couple of weeks ago when one of television’s other most obnoxious celebrities got a divorce? Unfortunately, of course you do. Yet there was one crucial, ridiculous piece to this puzzle that I had completely forgotten about until today: One week before the implosion of Kim Kardashian’s marriage, the unlucky-in-love star was cast in Tyler’s Perry’s newest film, The Marriage Counselor, playing — you guessed it — a marriage counselor. The kasting was wonderfully, unintentionally timely, and also completely absurd. I’m sold.

Apparently, the irony has been lost on Perry’s dedicated fan-base. Today, Perry decided to address those naysayers directly via a very informative-slash-hilarious blog that explained the reasoning behind the casting. “I could not have imagined I’d be getting all these emails about Kim Kardashian,” he blogged. “I HAVE SEEN THEM!! YOU HAVE BEEN HEARD!! …LOL.” Not laughing out loud yet? Let’s continue. READ FULL STORY »
