Remember that time a couple of weeks ago when one of television’s other most obnoxious celebrities got a divorce? Unfortunately, of course you do. Yet there was one crucial, ridiculous piece to this puzzle that I had completely forgotten about until today: One week before the implosion of Kim Kardashian’s marriage, the unlucky-in-love star was cast in Tyler’s Perry’s newest film, The Marriage Counselor, playing — you guessed it — a marriage counselor. The kasting was wonderfully, unintentionally timely, and also completely absurd. I’m sold.
Apparently, the irony has been lost on Perry’s dedicated fan-base. Today, Perry decided to address those naysayers directly via a very informative-slash-hilarious blog that explained the reasoning behind the casting. “I could not have imagined I’d be getting all these emails about Kim Kardashian,” he blogged. “I HAVE SEEN THEM!! YOU HAVE BEEN HEARD!! …LOL.” Not laughing out loud yet? Let’s continue.
Perry went on to explain that he had been receiving complaints in person, but a simple explanation of the film’s synopsis and Kim’s supporting role always changed even the most hardened of minds:
This movie is about a young lady named Judith (Jurnee Smolett), who grew up in the countryside of Virginia in a trailer park. She was raised in the church by her mother Sarah (Ella Joyce). Judith married her childhood sweetheart Brice (Lance Gross) and had the perfect life until she graduated college and went to work in the big city. After college, all she wanted to do was be a marriage counselor, but the only job she could find was working for a matchmaker named Janice (Vanessa Williams). Janice has several employees that work for her, including a woman named Ava (Kim Kardashian). Ava is constantly trying to influence Judith on everything from her shoes to her hair. Judith meets a man at work named Harley (Robbie Jones). Harley challenges everything in her life from her marriage to her husband to her faith. Meanwhile, Brice (Lance Gross), Judith’s husband, works at a pharmacy owned by Mrs. Waco (Renee Taylor). Brice has just hired a coworker named Melinda (Brandy), who has some major demons that she is running from. In the end, the choices that both of these young women have made come crashing down on them and their lives will never be the same. I wish I could tell you more, but I don’t want to ruin it for you.
So Brandy and Jess from Friday Night Lights grapple with adultery, and Kim K. gets to wear some fabulous shoes. Got that? Good. The best is yet to come. Perry explained that the reason Kim is perfect for this film is because she has oodles of young, adoring fans, who should absolutely see the film to soak in the “gravity” of what he had written. “I thought and still do think that it would be very responsible of her to be a part of this film,” he wrote. “To have the young people that look up to her, see her in a film that is about what happens in life when you make the wrong choices.”
“What happens in life when you make the wrong choices.” Correct me if I’m wrong here, but I think Perry is implying that it would be responsible of Kim to show her fans that to make certain “wrong” choices, choices that Kim and certain other members of her family have already made, would have detrimental effects on their lives. These choices may result in ratings and book sales for the Kardashian family, but they typically lead to heartbreak and chaos for the rest of us schmoes. “If one of those young people see this film and find the strength to live a better life and not go through what these characters went through in this movie, then we have all done what I feel I’m being led to do here,” he wrote. Kim Kardashian — A Kautionary Tale?
What do you think, PopWatchers? I actually agree with Perry on this one. While I can’t comment on the supposed gravity of his future film, I agree with his overall message. It would be nice if members of the Kardashian koterie let down the iron kurtain to show their fans that life ain’t one giant Laker game, particularly when divorce is involved. This will most likely never happen on their show, so I guess a Tyler Perry film is our next-best bet.
