Who’s the wild card now, Charlie?!

Returning from a three-week hiatus, Saturday Night Live is all new tonight with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Charlie Day as host and Maroon 5 (and their reluctantly shirtless lead singer Adam Levine) as musical guests.

Day’s first go as an SNL host couldn’t be coming at a better time, really. Before the break, the back-to-back Ben Stiller and Anna Faris episodes felt lackluster at best (Melissa McCarthy set the bar painstakingly high), so the show desperately needs someone to give them a jolt of energy to get back on track. Anyone familiar with the manic sense of humor that makes Day a standout in ensembles (like on Sunny) and a scene-stealer in mainstream comedy (like in Going the Distance and Horrible Bosses), would argue he is just the man –nay, the Dayman– for the job.

If SNL utilizes Day’s zany, pitch-perfect comedic timing, they could have another excellently off-kilter host like McCarthy or Zach Galifianakis on their hands. I predict they’ll pair up Day as much as possible with his Bosses co-star Jason Sudeikis (and understandably so, as the two have great chemistry, even just in the promos), but hopefully they don’t spread him too thin. And they should definitely try to sneak him in for an SNL commercial, because when it comes to selling a product, he’s really, very good at it. Meee-ow.

Are you excited to see Charlie Day get his first shot as hosting Saturday Night Live, PopWatchers? Let us know how you feel and then check in throughout the show to tell us how you think he’s doing. Then be sure to come back Sunday morning for a full SNL recap.
