Today in Who-Can-Play-Nice-With-Jon-Stewart-And-Who-Can’t News, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice sat down with The Daily Show host for an in-depth, frank, open discussion on the heated topic that is the Iraq War, while former Owner of Human Hair Donald Trump blasted Stewart for a recent segment about Presidential candidate Herman Cain and declared him a “racist.”
Rice stopped by The Daily Show on Tuesday night to promote her book No Higher Honor, where, in addition to telling a great ice-breaking story about recently deceased Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi (he had a notorious infatuation with her), had a nearly 20-minute conversation with Stewart about the Iraq War. In what could only be described as the rarest jewel in cable news programming (The Daily Show can win all the comedy Emmys it so richly deserves, but it’s also, most definitely, a news show): A level-headed talk between two opposing sides on a topic they’ll never fully reach an agreement on, but can, at the very least, state their case in a civilized manner. Watch all three parts of the fascinating, and yes, at some times, tense, interview below:
While it’s uncertain if Donald Trump saw Rice’s visit to the show, he definitely didn’t like what he saw when he watched Stewart lampoon Herman Cain and his response to the sexual harassment allegations during a Daily Show segment on Monday. In fact, Trump was so bothered by what he saw, he took to YouTube on Tuesday to air his grievances and a call for Stewart to be temporarily taken off the air. Here’s the clip in question that Trump refers to throughout:
With nary even a “Hello, YouTube pals! You’re fired!”, Trump, looking directly into the camera, argued, “How come Jon Stewart gets away with a very, very racist rant about Herman Cain? Nobody else could pull that off. Where is Rev. [Jesse] Jackson? Where is Rev. [Al] Sharpton? Where are all the critics that if somebody else did it, it would be a disaster? He horribly stated in his imitation, ‘Have you ever kidnapped a baby? Well, other than the Lindbergh baby?’ Now, if anybody sees this they will say, ‘Wow, that’s amazing.” (In the words of Stewart himself, said to Rice regarding her stance on the Bush administration and the Iraq War, “That’s a way of looking at it.”)
For Trump, it wasn’t so much what Stewart said, but how he said it. If people like Don Imus can be taken off the air, why not The Daily Show host, asked Trump? (First guess: Because what Stewart said definitely wasn’t even close to what Imus said, but I digress. Second guess: Stewart does intentionally overblown voices and imitations of everyone, no matter what their background, during every show. Again, I digress.) Trump, who has been the butt of Stewart’s jokes more than once (maybe the real issue here is that when Trump doesn’t like when Stewart jokes about pizza), continued that Stewart should no longer get “away with” his humor.
Watch the video, in which Trump (who was called a racist himself by a different late night talk show host, David Letterman, earlier this year) also stated, “I like Jon Stewart. I hope they don’t take him off the air. But frankly, for this, they probably should, at least for a while,” he said. It’s terrible, it’s insulting to the African-American community. And I’ll tell you what, he should apologize.” (EW reached out to Comedy Central, who had no statement regarding Trump’s take on Stewart).
