Hanson launching what might be least socially acceptable beer in history

Hanson-Kings-Leon

I’m just taking a shot in the dark, but something tells me the Hanson brew — named MMMHop, what else? — won’t be the first brew the beer drinkers in your life will be reaching for come time for a cold one.

Hanson — yes, that Hanson — reportedly told a crowd at Oxford University Monday night that they’re launching their own brand of India Pale Ale. Not being a beer-drinker, bar-hopper, or generally social human being myself, I couldn’t tell you indefinitely whether MMMHop stands a chance of being ordered un-ironically, say, at a pub or other watering hole. 'GamePro' shuts down print magazine: Farewell, childhood

Gamepro

Long ago, in the early 1990s, it wasn’t always easy to find people who shared your passions. There were no Facebook groups or trending topics. Primordial online chat rooms were only readily accessible to smart people with better technology than my family’s old Macintosh. I was somehow the only person in my elementary school class who played videogames — or maybe there were more gamers, and we all just kept quiet, because let’s put it this way: Talking about Super Mario wasn’t the best way to not get made fun of. So for me, GamePro was an oasis of sanity; proof that there were other people, smart people, adult people who dug videogames as much as I did. READ FULL STORY »

Pippa Middleton, Kardashians among Ten Most Fascinating People of 2011

To make Barbara Walters’ annual list of the The Ten Most Fascinating Peopleis an honor typically bestowed upon only the most worthy of candidates, so it’s only fitting that this year’s bunch includes the Kardashians and a hat trendsetter. Walters will present her picks on Barbara Walters Presents: The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2011 on Dec. 14, and name the No. 1 most fascinating person of the year (who has yet to be revealed). Since we don’t know the most fascinating person’s identity, we now get two full weeks to internally debate the pop culture merits of the runners-up. READ FULL STORY »

PopWatch Confessional: When has TV been a good icebreaker for you?

CURB-ENTHUSIASM

You’ve got to love this story: Renowned legal and political brain Alan Dershowitz recently sent the Curb Your Enthusiasm episode “Palestinian Chicken” to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu along with the suggestion that he invite Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas over to watch it, have a good laugh together, and begin negotiations. “I know that Netanyahu has received the DVD, and he was looking forward to watching it,” Dershowitz told The Current. “So it may be that Larry David will not only win Emmys, but he may even qualify for the Nobel Peace Prize, if his episode could bring together Netanyahu and Abbas, and bring Abbas to the negotiating table.”

Of course, none of us can compete with the potential of that, but I suspect we, the little entertainment-obsessed people, have all used our love of TV to spur conversation in awkward situations. READ FULL STORY »

USA dramas returning in January. Thank goodness -- I need something to heat up my winter

royal-pains

Even though I live in southern California, I still need something warm and fluffy to get me through the winter, so the news that Royal Pains and its pastel summer-in-the-Hamptons cardigans are coming back in January made my day. White Collar is also returning that week, with Matt Bomer’s impossibly good-looking art thief and its mounting concern over the future of Kelly Kapowski Elizabeth.

Let’s start with Royal Pains. From toxic cleaning products to a painting that made Fez, er, Wilmer Valderrama, faint, last season was full of bizarre maladies. What is the weirdest ailment we’ll see this winter? Will a guest star (I’m hoping for a Ricky Schroder sighting) fall off a horse, or nearly drown in the rough Hamptons waters? READ FULL STORY »

Fox to mount Oscar campaign for Andy Serkis. Are you ready for a motion-capture Oscar nominee?

Last month, Andy Serkis’ rep hinted to EW that he expected a legitimate Best Supporting Actor Oscar campaign for his client, whose Caesar in Rise of the Planet of the Apes was by far the most compelling and fully-formed character that motion-capture technology has yet produced. At Monday’s Gotham Independent Awards, Fox CEO Tom Rothman seemed to confirm such an effort, telling the Hollywood Reporter that the studio planned to “push … hard” for Serkis to become the first mo-cap performance to be recognized in the Academy’s acting categories. “I think part of what we have to do is help educate people to understand that that is 100 percent his performance,” Rothman said. “The emotionality — what you see and what you feel — [Serkis] did it. I saw him. I watched him. Then they digitally overlaid — you can think of it as a costume — the skin and the hair of an ape. But I tell you the thing that people felt — and a lot of people were moved when they saw the movie — is because of his performance.”

By now, Serkis is the unquestioned gold standard of motion-capture acting, beginning with his heralded work as Gollum in The Lord of the Rings films and then as the giant ape in Peter Jackson’s King Kong. READ FULL STORY »

Miley Cyrus' supposed Occupy Wall Street support song and video stirs up mixed opinions

As any Occupy [insert street or city here] protester or organizer might argue, unless you’re wealthy or downright lucky (or, in this case, both… seriously, Universe?), it’s anything but a party in the USA right now.

Still, Miley Cyrus may be showing her support for the movement. Or, at least, her music is being used to do so. A new video — released by something called the Miley Cyrus Rock Mafia (look, I don’t know how to comprehend all of those particular words put together either, PopWatchers) — set to Cyrus’ song titled “Don’t Give Up: It’s a Liberty Walk!” features footage of Occupy rallies from around the world. The video even begins with a message that reads, “This is dedicated to the thousands of people who are standing up for what they believe in.” Watch the video after the jump:

Gracefully aging Ali Lohan laughs off plastic surgery rumors: 'I was cracking up'

If gracing the cover of Page Six Magazine is a barometer for pop culture omnipresence, then it’s time to finally accept the fact that the Lohan family is never going away. Lindsay’s twiggy younger sister Ali, who now wishes to be called Aliana, used the December issue of the magazine as a vehicle to finally address the plastic surgery rumors that have been plaguing the nation since roughly three months ago. Ali, who is 17 years old, maintains that the rumors are completely false.

“I was cracking up,” she said of the Internet frenzy. “Because, like, when would I do that? I’m 17 years old.” 17 is the new 50, Ali. READ FULL STORY »

POLL: Why did you watch the 'Victoria's Secret Fashion Show'? (Note: There are more than 'two good reasons')

I know, I know. What a ridiculous question. Everybody knows that the only reason you “accidentally” tuned in for the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, all 10.3 million of you, was because you left the TV on after you spent a wholesome evening watching Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer and got distracted whilst baking cookies. (For the models! Happy Holidays, girls!)

Are they gone?… Okay, so now that your judgmental loved ones and co-workers are out of the room, we here at PopWatch are dying to know: Why did you actually watch the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show and help propel it to Tuesday night’s highest-rated show? READ FULL STORY »

'Millionaire Matchmaker' reunion: Patti Stanger 'couldn't sleep' after comments about gays

It’s been a banner year for retracted and insincere apologies, and Patti Stanger certainly didn’t buck the trend on last night’s Millionaire Matchmaker reunion. In a clip uploaded by Gawker, host Andy Cohen asked Stanger about the controversial comments she made about gays and Jewish men on his Watch What Happens show back in September.

After Stanger insisted she loves both the gays and Jewish men, Cohen (who happens to be a member of both of the offended minorities) asked her to elaborate on the gay comments. She stated first and foremost that “I want the gay community to know that I love them… ” and things went downhill from there. READ FULL STORY »
