'Saturday Night Live': Watch the Steve Jobs skit that didn't make it on air

In the days and weeks since the passing of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, the world has wondered, “What now? Who will carry on the torch for unbeatable technological innovation and groundbreaking media and business strategies?” Of course, no one may be wondering that more than the high-profile candidates left in Jobs’ shadow, such as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, Huffington Post Editor-in-Chief Arianna Huffington, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, and controversial News Corp. chairman Rupert Murdoch. And Saturday Night Live decided to poke a little fun at Jobs’ successors. Only, the sketch never made it to broadcast. READ FULL STORY »

Lindsay Lohan to pose nude for 'Playboy'? File under: News that makes me sad.

Dozens of actresses desperate to cling to fame have increased their celebrity by posing for Playboy. So why does it seem so sad that Lindsay Lohan might be the next one to follow (birthday) suit?

TMZ reported today that the Mean Girls actress — who’s currently in trouble with the law — has agreed to pose for Hugh Hefner’s magazine for nearly $1 million. Her rep told EW he cannot confirm whether or not Lohan will indeed pose, but it wouldn’t be too surprising that a woman who already appeared partially nude for New York magazine would accept a big payday to star in another tasteful shoot. (UPDATE: X17, via People, spoke to Lohan’s mother, Dina, who said Lohan did indeed post for Playboy.) Yet, I can’t help but feel sad hearing this news. READ FULL STORY »

Johnny Depp honors friend and 'Rum Diary' writer Hunter S. Thompson at Columbia University panel

Johnny Depp remembers the day he first met Hunter S. Thompson. He was waiting at the back of a tavern when the author and journalist burst in, ordering people out of his way. “I just saw sparks, literally sparks,” Depp said of their first encounter. “In his left hand he had a three-foot cattle prod, and in his right hand a tazer.”

The memory was one of many shared Monday night by Johnny Depp and director Bruce Robinson at a Columbia University panel honoring the life and legacy of Thompson before a special screening of Depp’s upcoming film, The Rum Diary. In the film — adapted from a novel by Thompson — Depp plays Paul Kemp, a semi-autobiographical stand-in for Thompson who works as a young freelance journalist in Puerto Rico.

Rum Diary marks the second time Depp has portrayed Thompson — he first played the author in 1998′s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. At Monday’s panel, Depp spoke of the time he spent living in Thompson’s basement preparing for the Fear and Loathing role and the close bond that formed between the two men. Depp, who Thompson referred to as “Colonel,” said from that first bar room encounter until the writer’s death in 2005, the pair were almost inseparable. READ FULL STORY »

'Grand Theft Auto V' announced by Rockstar Games

Categories: Videogames

Just a few short days after celebrating the 10th anniversary of Grand Theft Auto III, Rockstar Games has announced the next stage of evolution for their iconic crime franchise. The developer’s official website has been taken over by a simple, stark title — Grand Theft Auto V — with a tiny promise at the bottom: “Trailer 11.02.11.” So, for the next eight days, with no other information from the famously secretive Rockstar, we’ll have to simply ponder the implications of the fact that the “V” is illustrated like a dollar bill. (Could the series be shifting focus to white collar crime? So, in this case, “Grand Theft Auto” refers to the decimation of the American automobile industry by the preying mantises of Wall Street? Hey, my dad would totally play that game.) READ FULL STORY »

PopWatch Confessional: When were you most envious of a fellow concertgoer?

Willie-Nelson

You remember that awesome thing you watched happen to someone else at a concert and wished had happened to you? Here’s why I’m asking: Last night, I went to see Willie Nelson. At 78, Willie doesn’t move around the stage a lot, so when he walked to the apron, we all learned forward in our seats. He took off the red bandana he was wearing and tossed it to a woman in the front row. A little later, now wearing a second bandana, he started walking to the apron again. This time, there were anticipatory “Oooh”s, and some people (read: me) turning to the person beside them asking why that person had foolishly bought tickets in the balcony.

Willie gave out at least five bandanas. Man, I would have loved one. It would remind me of how I feel every time I hear him play “Funny How Time Slips Away,” which is, oddly enough, like time stops. All I have to do is listen to him and I tear up a little because it’s a perfect combination of lyrics and melody. (And speaking of perfection, if there’s a better three-song medley on a set list than “Funny How Time Slips Away,” “Crazy,” and “Night Life,” I haven’t heard it.)

Your turn. What’s your worst case of fellow concertgoer envy? I would never survive it, so that’s how I live with not being one of the women who’s danced with and kissed Jon Bon Jovi onstage during “Bed of Roses.” Let’s watch some samples below, just to twist the knife. READ FULL STORY »

Orlando Jones tweeted that liberals 'should kill Sarah Palin'

After Libya strongman Moammar Gadhafi was killed by rebels on Thursday, many celebrities marked the occasion with humor on Twitter. “Lunch with Gadhafi, cancelled,” tweeted Steve Martin. On Saturday, actor Orlando Jones went in a different direction, posting, “Libyan Rebels kill Gaddafi, if American liberals want respect they better stop listening to Aretha & kill Sarah Palin(:”

After the post came from the MADtv star’s unverified account, followers got into a war of words with him over what he wrote about the former Alaskan governor. While Palin did not respond on Twitter to Jones’ remarks, her supporters did. An account called Tennessee4Palin (@TN4P) wrote, “Why does @TheOrlandoJones think it’s funny to call for Sarah Palin to be murdered? #palin #liberaltolerance”, to which Jones responded, “No I don’t. I think it’s funny that you are so upset about my inane tweet.” READ FULL STORY »

'Castle': Another great Halloween episode has convinced me that we need a movie next year

castle

If there’s any holiday perfectly suited for Castle‘s natural mix of humor and horror (of the real-life crime-kind), it’s Halloween. And last night, the show once again pegged an excellent episode this holiday, leading me to a somewhat controversial conclusion: I want to see a Castle Halloween movie. Let me explain.

This weekend, I found myself preparing for the perfect DVR binge thanks to the upcoming Halloween lineup on ABC Family. My dear Tivo, Leonardo, will soon be crowded with my old favorites like Casper, Beetlejuice, Hocus Pocus, and anything Tim Burton has done in cartoon form. (Note: I already have most of my favorites on DVD, but I must DVR them anyway because we all know movies are better when you watch them on TV.) God help me, the madness doesn’t stop there. I’ve been known to spend at least one pre-Halloween night marathoning my favorite spooky episodes of TV and, when I’m feeling nostalgic, I’ll even seek out terrible things like Mary Kate and Ashley’s Double, Double, Toil and Trouble. (You can stop respecting me now; I understand.) But upon looking at my lineup  I realized it’s been a long time since I’ve fallen in love with a Halloween special or movie.

That’s not to say there haven’t been good Halloween movies and specials released over the last few years, but as an adult now, there’s nothing that’s quite captured my attention like my old favorites once did. I imagine I’m not alone. The solution? It’s time for new classics — something for those who grew up with the movies now in rotation on ABC Family but are all now craving something new. And, oddly enough, I think I know a crime-fighting pair who would be perfect for the job. The proof is in last night’s episode. READ FULL STORY »

'How I Met Your Mother' react: The guest stars steal the show! Did you expect them to come back the way they did?

Chris-Elliott-How-Mother

For an episode that was so heavily about Barney and Nora, I sure didn’t have a lot of post-episode thoughts on them. But that’s to be expected when an episode featured a guest star slate as impressive as this one.

When I first learned Chris Elliott, Wayne Brady, Frances Conroy, and Bill Fagerbakke would be returning for the episode, I wasn’t sure in what capacity they’d be turning up. And in my wildest dreams I never could have imagined how they’d all be worked into an episode — especially considering Marshall’s dad (Fagerbakke) died last year. I would have put money on “flashbacks,” but I would have been wrong. As it turns out, the episode took a far less direct approach (and even featured a guest spot that I didn’t know about!).
