Sarah Palin will not run. How will comedy survive?

Sarah Palin’s announcement that she won’t seek the Republican nomination for president in 2012 was not unexpected, but that doesn’t alleviate the disappointment for her passionate supporters — or those merely fascinated by our national obsession with the former Alaska governor. Consider me in the latter group. It’s sad, I guess, but the political impact of Palin’s announcement is secondary for me to the loss in entertainment value. It’s as if Alec Baldwin said he was not coming back to 30 Rock this season. Or Snooki checked out of Jersey Shore. (The writers at The Daily Show and Saturday Night Live must be in mourning today.) READ FULL STORY »

This Week's Cover: The Reunions Issue!

Categories: This Week's Cover

Get ready to reminisce with Entertainment Weekly‘s second annual Reunions issue, hitting newsstands this week. The special edition brings together 10 memorable casts from both movies and TV, including The Carol Burnett Show, Fatal Attraction, and Home Improvement (to name a few). Some highlights, including behind-the-scenes footage from many of our Reunions photo shoots, below:

The Carol Burnett Show: Though they may grace the cover in black attire, Carol Burnett, Tim Conway and Vicki Lawrence turn up the color inside the pages with feathered boas and massive headpieces (don’t worry, we got it all on camera). The trio discuss the memorable characters they developed throughout the course of the series. “Carol gave us the opportunity to do whatever we wanted on the show, which was always great because we would surprise not only the audience but her, too,” says Conway. 'Up All Night': Talk about last night's 'New Car' here!

I really want to love Up All Night. Unfortunately, I’m not there yet. But NBC is trying to make this relationship work. The network just gave the freshman comedy, starring Christina Applegate, Will Arnett, and Maya Rudolph, a full season pickup. So, I’ll gladly use the extra episodes to see if I can fully commit. And by commit, I mean having my DVR record the series. READ FULL STORY »

The world lost one of its most iconic innovators today when Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple Inc. and former CEO of Pixar Animation Studios, died at the age of 56. Word of his passing spread like wildfire after it was posted on Apple’s website, and celebrities en masse have taken to Twitter to commemorate his genius. We’ll be adding to this post as the night goes on, as more celebrities use their iPads and iPhones to tweet messages of fond remembrance.

Jon Favreau: ”We lost a man of true vision today. Condolences to the whole Apple family.”

Ashton Kutcher: ”I never thought I could be so busted up about the loss of someone I never met. #stevejobs” READ FULL STORY »

This might be Kristen Wiig and Jason Sudeikis' last year on 'SNL'. How much does the show need them?

Kristin-Wiig-and-Jason-Sudeikis_240.jpg

If there’s any truth to today’s rumors, then Saturday Night Live may soon be short two of its biggest a-holes stars. As is customary for SNL standouts who have successfully transitioned to the big screen, Kristen Wiig and Jason Sudeikis are reportedly leaving the show at the end of the season to focus on their film careers. This news certainly doesn’t come as a shock, but it’s probably still pretty unsettling if you’re a die-hard SNL fan. Vicky St. Elmo and DJ Supersoak are quality standouts on the show, and two of the biggest names on its dwindling roster. Whether Wiig or Sudeikis leave next year or in two or three, it’s going to be a huge loss.

But hey, for silver lining purposes, why don’t we put our selfish needs aside and look at the bigger picture? Even though we love seeing them on the show, Wiig and Sudeikis’ departures could very well work wonders for their careers and for SNL. READ FULL STORY »

As news of Steve Jobs’ death hit Silicon Valley, Hollywood and everywhere else today, friends, colleagues, and admirers of the Apple co-founder, former CEO of Pixar, and all-around visionary (who passed away Wednesday after a battle with pancreatic cancer at the age of 56) shared their memories and tributes.

President Barack Obama:Michelle and I are saddened to learn of the passing of Steve Jobs. Steve was among the greatest of American innovators – brave enough to think differently, bold enough to believe he could change the world, and talented enough to do it.  READ FULL STORY »

'South Park' is back! So how can the show keep from 'getting old'?

The South Park mid-season finale famously left audiences teetering in limbo, with Stan’s parents divorced, Stan seemingly living somewhere else, and the episode’s critique of the show’s one-crazy-adventure-after-another story structure casting doubt on whether Matt Stone and Trey Parker even wanted to continue making South Park.

But praise Queen Spider, South Park is back, at least through 2013. Tonight’s episode seems like classic South Park shenanigans, too, at least judging from the episode title — “Ass Burgers” — and the preview clip of Eric Cartman going to the school nurse, faking some kind of ailment in his buns, and her finding a hamburger hiding in his pants.  READ FULL STORY »

Oprah Winfrey still top-earning woman in Hollywood, but look who's catching up

Lady-Gaga

Lady Gaga may have passed Oprah Winfrey on Forbes‘ annual list of The 100 Most Powerful Women this year (Gaga fell from No. 7 to No. 11, while Winfrey slid from No. 3 to No. 14), but Winfrey still sits atop the magazine’s list of Hollywood’s Highest-Earning Women. Winfrey made an estimated $290 million between May 2010 and May 2011, which is $200 million more than Gaga banked in second place. As Forbes notes, however, with Winfrey’s show gone and her network yet to deliver on high expectations, that gap may close come next year’s rankings.

Coming in at No. 3 is Bethenny Frankel with $55 million, thanks to her Skinnygirl branding savvy. She beats out Gisele Bundchen, Ellen DeGeneres, Taylor Swift, and Judge Judy Sheindlin, who are in a four-way tie at fourth place with $45 million each. Process that. The rest of the Top 10: Katy Perry ($44 million), Beyoncé Knowles ($35 million), and Danielle Steel ($35 million).

'Hunger Games' Capitol site reveals (some) District Seals. Proud of your Panem position?

District-12_75.jpg

So not fair. Back in August, I logged onto The Hunger GamesCapitol site and found myself assigned to the very mysterious, very sly District 5. (R.I.P. Foxface.) And despite the fact that those participating in the Capitol game are learning more about their assigned districts via District Seals — and those districts’ corresponding Facebook pages — it looks like my District will still remain mysterious. Because, as of now, District 5 has yet to release a Seal. Time to shake my fist at that President Snow!

Still, it’s cool to see the Badges that have been released, including Katniss’ own District 12. (See pictured above. Bigger version posted below.) READ FULL STORY »

Jon Hamm reveals who almost played Don Draper

Thomas-Jane

After four seasons as Mad Men‘s Don Draper, it’s difficult to imagine anyone but Jon Hamm as the dapper 1960′s ad executive whose seemingly perfect life is slowly being unraveled by a dark secret. Hamm is Draper, even when he plays versions of the chiseled-chin character for laughs on 30 Rock or Saturday Night Live. But it almost never happened. Hamm tells Marc Maron in his WTF Podcast (scroll to 41:00) that Don Draper was nearly Hung. That is to say that AMC originally had its sights set on Hung‘s Thomas Jane for the role.
