TV Leaderboard: 'Community' scares its way to the top of EW.com reader rankings

Since the start of the fall TV season, only two shows have been tops with EW.com readers: The Vampire Diaries and Breaking Bad. To that storied list we can now add NBC’s wily and weird Thursday night cult comedy Community, which tickled and (perhaps) terrified viewers with a Halloween anthology episode. Meanwhile, Once Upon a Time‘s series premiere landed just out of the top five. Check out the complete rankings below:  READ FULL STORY »

'Puss in Boots': a good kitty and one (deliciously) rotten egg

Categories: Animals, Animation, Movies

Puss in Boots was the creation of French author Charles Perrault (also responsible for Little Red Riding Hood and Cinderella)  who in 1697 published Le Maistre Chat, ou Le Chat Botté, about a clever cat who helps his poor master win riches and a princess. But thanks to Dreamworks, isn’t it now impossible to imagine Puss without his smooth-talking, Latin-lover moves courtesy of a (fantastic) Antonio Banderas?

When we first met today’s Puss, it was as a scene-stealer in 2004′s Shrek 2  and — as some critics have pointed out — it’s hard to give a secondary character his own movie. But so far audiences are  flocking to the family-friendly flick – it was the top grossing film of Friday with 9.6 million dollars. The animation is vivid and terrific, and there’s plenty of good cat jokes that people who like cats will particularly enjoy. (Even Puss himself says cat people are crazy so….) I’m particularly taken with the idea of a dastardly Humpty Dumpty — voiced in the film by Zach Galifianakis, which, of course, helps. Whoever came up with the idea that Humpty is a lonely, misunderstood genius really deserves some credit. Humpty, while understandably hindered by the fact that he is, you know, an egg, plots and schemes and betrays, and yet is still weirdly quite lovable. And while I’m worried that kids will grow up thinking that all these different folklore characters were hanging out together (Puss also dips into Jack and the Beanstalk, The Golden Goose, and Jack and Jill), it certainly makes for some good adventure.

But I’m curious, have you guys seen Puss in Boots yet? Do you have a favorite fairy tale character you’d like to see get the star treatment next? Sound off below!

'Grimm' pilot: 'This is no fairy tale... '

NBC’s pilot for Grimm aired last night, and while it wasn’t exactly what its unfortunate title might suggest, there’s still some work to be done. The show is like CSI with a case of the heebie-jeebies… SVU if Stabler could see spooks! Homicide detective Nick Burkhardt (David Giuntoli) learned he was descended from the brothers Grimm, could see demons, and was fated to spend the rest of his days hunting the pests. So how did this all play out in episode one? READ FULL STORY »

'Supernatural' react: Dean and Sam's doubles get brutal. Plus, did you enjoy Bobby's mini-romance?

It’s been a long time since the first few minutes of a Supernatural episode left me as horrified as I was last night. Going into the episode, we knew that Dean and Sam would be going up against their Leviathan doppelgangers, but even with that in the back of my mind, my stomach fell just a little at the sight of Dean and Sam executing a room of people at the bank in the episode teaser. Even if it wasn’t human Sam and Dean committing the act, that was awfully brutal, I thought.

The episode continued in a similarly unnerving way, and at one point — probably sometime after we saw Dean and Sam shoot up a diner of people — I wondered if the show had laid on the crazy a little too thick. And for me to say that about a show like Supernatural, which has pushed the envelope when it comes to all things disturbing, that’s saying a lot.  READ FULL STORY »

The words of Hunter S. Thompson, read by Johnny Depp

The release of The Rum Diary, which opens today, has turned into the first real opportunity to celebrate the life and work of Hunter S. Thompson since he died in 2005. Johnny Depp, who forged a bond with his fellow Kentuckian when he first tackled the gonzo writer’s world during the making of 1998′s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, used his current film’s promotional tour as a barnstorming tribute to Thompson, Rolling Stone‘s Jann Wenner wrote a fond remembrance to his most famous writer, and ESPN’s John Walsh talked about his old friend’s quirks on The BS Report Podcast.

But as always, the best celebration of Thompson are his own words. And if you don’t have his books in front of you, or he never wrote you a personal letter, at least you can listen to Johnny Depp read some of his own personal correspondences with the good doctor. In the clip below, Depp reads a 1996 letter from Thompson inviting him to a ceremony in Louisville where the mayor intends to present the author with the key to the city. “Can you get a Gulfstream 5 to get us to Louisville en masse?” asks the good doctor.  READ FULL STORY »

Contrarian Corner: 'Whitney' is better than '2 Broke Girls.' You heard me.

Before this year’s fall TV season began, pretty much every critic and member of the TV-watching public assumed that 2 Broke Girls would be the better of the two Whitney Cummings-created shows. 2 Broke Girls boasted an enviable spot on CBS’ Monday comedy lineup, Kat Dennings’ indie star power, and Michael Patrick King’s Sex and the City sheen; the eponymous Whitney had a comedian with unproven acting chops and questionable likability as its lead, an annoying (and ubiquitous) ad campaign, and terrible early buzz. Poll: Who's your favorite stand-up comic of all time?

As any entertainer will attest, making someone laugh is always harder than making someone cry. It takes an entirely different skill set and taps into an entirely different, and arguably, more complicated psyche. (What makes one person roll with delight could make another roll their eyes with disgust.) Of course, if you’re one of the great stand-up comics, you can accomplish both: Making your audience laugh so hard they cry.

Then again, having to choose your favorite stand-up comic of all-time might be just as difficult a task. Do you go with the rule-breakers of comedy who not only made you laugh, but made you think and often called for — and often effected — social change? Do you pick a mainstream comic who can finely pinpoint all those funny little quirks of everyday life through observational comedy? Or is it a no-brainer to pick the class clown that plays up the silly side in of all of us? READ FULL STORY »

'The No Doctor Cop Lawyer Show': Our favorite scary scenes in non-horror movies

Large-Marge

Horror movies are supposed to be scary. If you walk away from a scary movie with an emotional scar or a terrifying new phobia, you have no one to blame but yourself. But there’s a special subsection of cinematic horror reserved for scary movie sequences in non-horror movies. These are the scenes that snuck out of nowhere to frighten you, suddenly emerging in the middle of thrilling adventure or comedic hijinks. Scenes like the transporter malfunction in Star Trek: The Motion Picture, or the diner scene in Mulholland Drive. In the new episode of The No Doctor Cop Lawyer Show, we discuss some of our favorite out-of-nowhere scary sequences. Watch the video, and tell us some of your favorites in the comments! Go Coco! Conan will officiate a gay wedding in NYC

Conan O’Brien is about to make New York City a brighter, sunnier place. And no, not just because of his spectacular ginger hair. As Vulture reported earlier, upon his return to the Big Apple, O’Brien will officiate a gay wedding on-air during one of the Conan tapings. (A Conan publicist confirmed to EW that the news is true, but an exact air date for the blessed event has not yet been set.)

Of course, as Vulture pointed out, this isn’t O’Brien going for cheap laughs, nor is it a publicity stunt. (The guy’s got a giant orange blimp that hovers over America’s cities. Can’t get much more publicity than that!) In fact, sources told the site, “O’Brien will be marrying a longtime staffer and his partner.” No matter who the couple, how great is this, PopWatchers?!
