'Desperate Housewives': Post-murder angst continues, Susan and Carlos (?!) almost kiss

Desperate-Housewives-Paulson

You’d think a series that kicks off its final season with a murder cover-up would move a tad bit faster, but Housewives seems to be content in keeping a slow and steady pace. Not to say that’s necessarily the worst thing. After all, this week’s episode laid the groundwork for at least two big plot lines moving ahead and some entertaining filler stories in between: Lynette tormented/nearly destroyed her newly engaged sister’s relationship, Renee took Lee’s daughter shopping and learned she may have some maternal instincts after all, and Bree and Gaby worked together to find out what Detective Chuck Vance was hiding (a ring, it turns out).

Of course, the episode’s biggest development involved Susan, Carlos and (later) Mike. While Gaby was busy helping Bree sneak behind the detective’s back, Carlos was busy bonding with Susan. The two bumped into each other during a late night stroll and talked about their post-murder angst. But that was just the starting point! Once they realized they had a murder to bond over, the possibilities were endless. By the end the walk, Susan even recommended Carlos read To Kill a Mockingbird because she thought he’d like it. Book recommendations? That’s like the adult equivalent of a friendship bracelet. Anyway, when Mike realized Susan and the neighbor she used to refer to as Ricky Ricardo were developing a friendship, he was naturally skeptical, but Susan assured him he had nothing to worry about. Ben Stiller hosts 'Saturday Night Live': Eddie Murphy is a no-show, but hey, there's Hugh Jackman, Stefon and...Kenny G!?!

stiller-stefan_320.jpg

Well, that answered that: Eddie Murphy wasn’t ready to make his return to Saturday Night Live, after all. When news surfaced this week that the former SNL cast member could possibly bury the hatchet with his former employers (the upcoming Oscars emcee reportedly took issue with the late night show after David Spade referred to him as “a falling star” in a Hollywood Minute segment in the ’90s) by making an appearance during last night’s show, hopeful fans were left with only disappointment from the Ben Stiller-hosted episode. Disappointment… and Kenny G.

But, even with the possibility of one of the great SNL performers making his long-awaited return to Studio 8H looming in the air, the show felt surprisingly lackluster, right from the get go. (Blame Alec Baldwin and Melissa McCarthy, who set the bar way too high for Stiller to follow tonight.) Kicking off the show, as they often–and, let’s be honest, too often–do with a political sketch, this time featuring Jason Sudeikis as himself as possible Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney and Bobby Moynihan as New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. The skit didn’t provide much besides invoking every New Jersey stereotype for Gov. Christie, like referring to people as “meatballs” (Moynihan’s Snooki would be so proud) and revealing the truth about his Presidential bid (“Look I’m gonna run in 2016. I just can’t do it now. Let’s just say, I gotta make a couple things go away first.”) READ FULL STORY »

Ben Stiller hosts tonight's 'Saturday Night Live': Talk about it here!

ben-stiller-snl

No pressure on Ben Stiller, but there are some awfully high expectations going into tonight’s Saturday Night Live, which he’ll be hosting for just the second time in his career. Not only is he entering into a season that is two-for-two with stellar hosts (first with record-breaker Alec Baldwin and then with first-timer Melissa McCarthy), but there’s also been talk that his Tower Heist co-star Eddie Murphy could stop by Studio 8H. It would be the first time in nearly 27 years that the former SNL superstar would be making an appearance on the show. Like we said, no pressure.

Of course, if Murphy does swing by to revive Buckwheat or take us on another adventure through “Mr. Robinson’s Neighborhood,” it won’t be the only long-overdue SNL reunion: Stiller himself was also a cast member, albeit a very short-lived one. (He appeared in just a handful of episodes during the 1989 season.) So while Stiller doesn’t have the same catalog of classic SNL characters as Murphy, the actor could just as easily break out one of his well-known movie characters like Zoolander or Tugg Speedman. Then again, Stiller works just as well, if not better, as the straight man. So should he dive back into his sketch comedy roots full-on (see: The Ben Stiller Show) or play second banana to current cast members like Taran Killam or Jay Pharoah? (Is anyone else hoping for a possible Eddie Murphy and Jay Pharoah-as-Eddie-Murphy face-off?)

We’ll be tuning in for tonight’s episode (with musical guests Foster the People) and if you are too, post your thoughts on the episode while it’s happening. Then be sure to check back with PopWatch on Sunday morning to get the full recap. Are you excited for tonight’s SNL? Are you tuning in to see if the Eddie Murphy rumors turn out to be true or are you more interested in Ben Stiller’s return to SNL? Or are you just pumped (up kicks) for Foster the People to rock out? Share in the comments section below and then come back tonight to post your opinion on the episode.

'Supernatural': Did Dean go too far?

Dean Winchester, you’re breaking my heart.

After last week’s nail-biter episode left us with a monster of a cliffhanger, we picked up this week’s Supernatural just moments later. But what unfolded was nothing like what I’d expected from this episode, which, by the way, was directed by Jensen Ackles. [Don't read any further if you haven't watched Friday's Supernatural.] READ FULL STORY »

Does 'Skyfall' as a James Bond title scare 'the living daylights' out of you?

When it comes to the James Bond franchise, titles to the 22 previous cinematic incarnations basically have gone one of two ways. One, short and sweet. Goldfinger, Dr. No, Thunderball. Even License to Kill. Brief and helpfully obvious. The other favorite option has been wordy tediousness, titles that sound more like perfume names than spy thrillers. For Your Eyes Only, Tomorrow Never Dies. And, yes, Quantum of Solace. Though even some of the most flowery Bond names are drawn directly from Ian Fleming’s pen, I lean towards simplicity — perhaps only because those titles seem to better reflect the depictions of Bond as “blunt instrument” that I prefer.

So I have to say I was encouraged to read the recent Internet scuttlebutt that the next Bond film might be called Skyfall. READ FULL STORY »

Walt Disney World Turns 40: A tribute from a life-long fan and a 40-year cast member

Disney-World-1971

This month, the Happiest Place on Earth hits middle age.

Forty years ago, Walt Disney World opened in a tiny Florida town called Bay Lake, about 20 minutes outside Orlando, a place that was just a smattering of orange groves in the middle of nowhere.

Walt Disney had already revolutionized in-person, multimedia entertainment in 1955 with Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif., but the space limitations of the park had hobbled his original vision. Not to mention that it still relied upon some old-fashioned assumptions about amusement parks: the park should be open only five days a week; it should be primarily oriented towards kids; and it’s a one-day experience — you show up in the morning and leave at night.

Uncle Walt’s “Florida Project” was going to change all that with a completely immersive environment: READ FULL STORY »

What the heck is the deal with 'The Human Centipede 2'? -- NSFW VIDEO

human-centipede2

The Human Centipede Part 2 opens today in the most godless parts of these United States. The first Centipede inspired both a musical and an episode of South Park, and EW’s Owen Gleiberman wrote has already said that the stapler-happy sequel “could be the sickest B movie ever made.” On the newest episode of The No Doctor Cop Lawyer Show, Keith Staskiewicz and I are joined by EW’s Clark Collis, the local Centipede Wrangler. Watch, and learn! (Warning: Some/all of this video may be inappropriate for any viewing environment.) READ FULL STORY »

TV Leaderboard: 'Breaking Bad' tops again in EW.com reader ratings

As Breaking Bad enters the homestretch for its fourth season, this week’s episode — in which a tragedy forced Jesse to choose sides in the Walt/Gus conflict — was far and away the highest-rated TV show among EW.com readers. Elsewhere, Glee jumped into the top ranks for the first time, thanks to an episode, “Asian F,” widely considered to be one of the show’s very best in a long time. Parks and Recreation continued its unbroken streak of top-tier ratings, while The Vampire Diaries dropped a bit to fifth. Here are the full standings: READ FULL STORY »

'Transformers 3' is the fourth-highest-grossing film ever

Categories: Sarcasm, Transformers

I’m a little bit inspired by the news that Transformers: Dark of the Moon has officially passed The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King on the list of highest-grossing films worldwide. After all, the Transformers threequel was created by a classic ragtag gang of outcasts and misfits. The film starred a self-loathing womanizer, a never-nude mannequin brought to life by science, and a bunch of robots whose character design was so fundamentally inexpressive that watching two Transformers talk to each other was about as much fun as watching two muddy snowmen in a marathon slam-poetry duel. The film’s supporting cast was populated by a group of excellent charactor actors who had to struggle through horrible dialogue and a complete lack of believable character motivation. The whole thing was helmed by Michael Bay, whose directorial style seems to indicate that he carries an existential hatred for the physical world we inhabit. To top it all off, Dark of the Moon was a threequel. Most franchises go downhill with their third film… which was proven yet again throughout the running time of Dark of the Moon, most specifically when Ken Jeong attacked Shia LaBeouf in the men’s bathroom in an extended sequence that would have been offensive to gay people and Asian people if it didn’t manage to just be offensive to humanity.
