On second thought, Val Kilmer was the best Batman, says Joel Schumacher

Asking Joel Schumacher about his Batman films must be like asking Steve Bartman about the Chicago Cubs. But the director, who was blamed for nearly killing the franchise after 1997′s Batman & Robin, seemed to have a healthy perspective when an IFC.com reporter brought it up during press for his latest film, Trespass, with Nicolas Cage and Nicole Kidman. “I’m responsible for everything. I said, ‘yes’ and I took it on,” he said. “It’s not my favorite movie I’ve ever made, but I’m proud of my cast and I’m proud of all the artists who worked on it. I take full responsibility for Batman & Robin.”

Schumacher is much prouder of his first Batman film, 1995′s Batman Forever. “For me, Val Kilmer was the best Batman,” he said. “I thought he looked great in the costume, and I thought he brought a depth to the role. I thought the relationship between Val and Nicole Kidman was very sexy.”

Wait! What? Rewind. “For me, Val Kilmer was the best Batman”?! READ FULL STORY »

Welcome to the big leagues, Herman Cain!

Herman Cain must have known something was different as soon as he sat down at the table for last night’s Republican debate in New Hampshire. The former CEO of Godfather Pizza found himself conveniently situated between Mitt Romney and Rick Perry. Welcome to primetime, Herman Cain!

Cain, who’s surged in the Republican polls primarily on the curiosity about his 9-9-9 plan (9 percent corporate tax, 9 percent income tax, 9 percent new national sales tax), was the center of attention, as the race’s flagging candidates took turns slamming him with their best scripted one-liners. Samuel L. Jackson joins Twitter: Say 'what' again and you probably won't get RT'ed by him

If you found Samuel L. Jackson’s reading of Go the F–k to Sleep to be hauntingly poetic, then you’re really going to enjoy his prose on Twitter. It’s true, the Oscar-nominated star has finally joined the Twitterverse and his feed brilliantly reads as if someone had made a fake Samuel L. Jackson Twitter account in which every post sounds the way we imagine Samuel L. Jackson says everything. Sample tweets so far: “I’m feelin’ da love! U got a muhfu–a all choked up!”, “I got gnats in my muthafu–in’ dressing room!” and “Can-a muh fu–asay f–k on here?” You can, Samuel L. Jackson. You can.

Ah, if only he’d joined Twitter when that pesky Bronx Zoo cobra had escaped and was running rampant. I feel like Samuel L. Jackson would have known just what to say to him.

'Parenthood': Welcome to the Bravermans, Nora!

parenthood

I was starting to worry about Parenthood, PopWatchers. The first few episodes of the third season of NBC’s typically underrated dramedy felt lackluster out of the gate. Besides the wonderful, long-overdue romantic reunion of Sarah and Mark (Jason Ritter), the remaining Bravermans and Co. didn’t have as much to work with: Haddie’s split from Alex (Michael B. Jordan), while sad, was inevitable, Zeke almost starred in a impotence commercial, scarring us indefinitely, and they finally gave poor Drew…a bad first date. (Quick thought, PopWatchers: What if one day Drew has a son named Steve? Steve Holt! Ah, the Arrested Development circle of life.) And, lest we forget, Amber’s new hairstyle. Shudder.

Alas, I shall worry no more. Not only was this week’s Parenthood the best so far this season, I’d argue it was one of the best of the series. The perfect blend of heart and humor that got so many of us invested in the first place shone through in the latest episode titled, “Nora.” Even though Drew was, once again, nowhere to be found. Poor, poor Drew. READ FULL STORY »

'Last Man Standing' series premiere features a seemingly homophobic 'joke': Were you offended?

Tim-Allen-Standing

To me, the series premiere of ABC’s new, Tim Allen-led sitcom Last Man Standing seemed simply annoying, what with its low-brow and overly testosterone-fueled humor. Macho jokes about what it means to be a man? Simply not my cup of tea, I thought. I was going to turn it off a few minutes in, but I kept watching half-heartedly until the show’s lead character Mike — played by Allen — uttered a “joke” somewhere near the end of the first half hour. And that’s when I lost it.

Let me set up the “joke” for you: During a conversation about his grandson’s daycare, Mike Baxter (Allen) laments that his daughter’s choice of schools is “hippie-hippie rainbow.” Fine, sure, it’s a stupid comment, but it gets worse. Mike’s daughter Kristin (Alexandra Krosney) explains to her dad that the teacher at this school “teaches sensitivity and tolerance.” Then comes Allen’s seemingly homophobic bomb: “I just don’t think your kid should go to that school,” his character Mike says, filled with disdain. “You know how that ends up: Boyd dancing on a float.”

I’ll reiterate the offensive part: “You know how that ends up: Boyd dancing on a float,” said with total disgust, as if a boy dancing on a parade float is an unacceptable, bad thing. My response: Huh? How is a boy dancing on a parade float anything but a joyful thing?

Occupy Wall Street marches on in NYC: Do protesters feel celebrity support is helping or hurting their cause?

west-wall-st

On Monday, Sept. 26, NPR.org wondered if the still-growing Occupy Wall Street movement was newsworthy. When readers questioned why there was so little coverage from the news organization at that point, NPR News Executive Editor Dick Meyer replied, “The recent protests on Wall Street did not involve large numbers of people, prominent people, a great disruption, or an especially clear objective.”

What a difference two weeks makes. Not only has the movement swelled in New York City — and expanded to Boston and Washington D.C. — but Hollywood has become involved in the social and political uprising. On Monday, Kanye West and Russell Simmons visited Manhattan’s Zuccotti Park, the unofficial headquarters of Occupy Wall Street, to show their support. And West and Simmons are just two of the latest stars to make an appearance at the site: Susan Sarandon, Michael Moore, and Roseanne Barr have taken part in the protests, while celebrities like Jon Stewart, Alec Baldwin, Jane Fonda, and Yoko Ono have voiced their support via Twitter or other outlets. (Other artists like Neutral Milk Hotel’s Jeff Mangum, Talib Kweli, and members of the punk band Anti-Flag have even played music for the masses as well.)

But for a group that seemingly turned on Geraldo Rivera Monday, how do the Occupy Wall Street protesters feel about the involvement of these “prominent people”? READ FULL STORY »
