Appreciating Dan Wheldon: An interview with David Letterman shows why the driver was a crossover star

Fans of the race world were devastated to hear about the passing of two-time Indy 500 champ Dan Wheldon, who died as a result of a multi-car crash during a race on Sunday in Las Vegas. But you didn’t have to be a fan of the sport to appreciate Wheldon or feel sadness looking back at his impressive, but all too-short, life.

The driver stopped by The Late Show with David Letterman this past June for a chat with the Indy enthusiast host, and it’s easy to see why Wheldon was beloved by those in his industry and elsewhere. The interview proved he was humble (he effortlessly joked around with Letterman, zinging back at the host during the interview, “As you pointed out, I’m not employed”), and simply loved what he did. It’s especially sad to hear Wheldon talk about upcoming races, now knowing that his life would end tragically because of one, but it’s nice to see him as the smiling, likable crossover star that fans remember. Watch the bittersweet clip below. READ FULL STORY »

'Real Housewives of New Jersey' reunion: The devil in blue

Wow, and I thought you couldn’t top last year’s reunion! After a rather repetitive (how many times can we hear, “We’re family”?), Danielle-less season, things got fiery on part 1 of the Real Housewives of New Jersey reunion. Teresa, dressed in electric blue, feuded with every lady on the couches, including her close friend Caroline. Jacqueline opted out of the reunion, owing to some terrible fight with Teresa that happened the night before while filming of season 4. (Even though I was curious about the Jacqueline-Teresa drama, I’m glad we were at least spared a time-wasting segment on Ashley — or should I say “Ashlee”). At this point, season 3 already feels like old news. Sure, Teresa’s Fabulicious book planted some evil seeds in the finale, but clearly the good stuff is happening right now, and no one can really talk about it. All this drama seems a bit higher stakes than usual, because the Jersey housewives have always seemed a bit more authentically linked to each other than the other Housewives — these women are either family or “like family,” further proving reality TV is Kryptonite to any relationship, even ones that appear to be rock-solid. E! host Giuliana Rancic reveals breast cancer battle on 'Today' -- VIDEO

During a visit to Today this morning, E!’s Giuliana Rancic (E! News, The Fashion Police) revealed to host Ann Curry that she is currently battling breast cancer. Rancic, who has publicly chronicled her struggles with infertility with her husband Bill Rancic on their reality show Giuliana & Bill, told Curry, “Through my attempt to get pregnant for the third time through IVF, we sadly found out that I have early stages of breast cancer… It’s been a shock.”

The 37-year-old went on to talk about how her doctor recommended she get a mammogram, something she thought she wouldn’t have to do until she was 40. (“I went kicking and screaming to get a mammogram, to be honest.”) A tearful and shaky Rancic recalled how she felt when she found out the news that she had cancer (“That was the hardest day”) and urged female viewers to put themselves and their health on their “to-do list.” Watch the entire interview below, in which the E! host talks about the support she’s had from her husband and why she’s “not going to give up” on having a child. Christina Hendricks starring in 'Need for Speed: The Run' -- EXCLUSIVE

The venerable Need for Speed franchise is getting some new blood in its upcoming 18th installment. EW can exclusively report that through the magic of motion-capture technology, Mad Men‘s Christina Hendricks will play a leading role in the upcoming Need for Speed: The Run. She plays Sam Harper, a presumably badass big wheel in the exciting world of outlaw street racing, who serves as the player’s eyes and ears on the course.

“She’s got a relationship with the main driver player,” explains Hendricks, referring to the game’s protagonist Jack Rourke (played by Sean Faris who, in a bit of ambient gamer lore, played Kyo Kusanagi in the film adaptation of The King of Fighters.) “They come from the same hood. She gets him involved in the cross-country race with a lot of money at stake. There’s an element of pushing him but also taking care of him.” READ FULL STORY »

On Sunday, two-time Indy 500 winner Dan Wheldon tragically passed away at the age of 33 from a fatal accident during a race in Las Vegas. Wheldon, who is survived by his wife Susie and their two children, was remembered on Twitter in the hours since his passing by sports and Hollywood stars. Actress Ashley Judd, who is married to driver Dario Franchitti, posted lines from John Donne’s poem “Death, Be Not Proud” and then tweeted, “Hardest parts, Thinking about Susie, Sebastian, Oliver. Seeing my husband grieve. Nights are so awful at first. Poor woman. Such pain.” Danica Patrick, one of the many in the racing community who reacted to Wheldon’s death on Twitter, wrote on her page, “There are no words for today. Myself and so many others are devastated. I pray for suzi and the kids that god will give them strength.”

Here are how some other stars paid tribute to the English-born Wheldon on Twitter: READ FULL STORY »

Sean Penn on 'Piers Morgan': Tea Party wants to 'lynch' Obama

Occupy Wall Street (OWS) might be the protest du jour, but that doesn’t mean that Tea Partiers have been cut completely from the political conversation. Appearing on Piers Morgan Tonight, Sean Penn addressed the conservative movement, which has been regularly compared to the left-leaning OWS. But the actor might have just ended up occupying Tea Partiers’ ire. “There’s another problem,” he told Morgan. “You have what I call the ‘Get the N-word out of the White House party,’ The Tea Party.”

When Morgan told the actor that fellow thespian Morgan Freeman had also made claims that the Tea Party was racist against President Obama (“Their stated policy, publicly stated, is to do whatever it takes to see to it that Obama only serves one term,” the actor said in September. “What underlines that?”), Penn responded, “I don’t think there’s any doubt about it. If you ask a representative of the Tea Party, ‘Okay, social security, socialists, get rid of it?’ They’re going to get very confused. At the end of the day, there’s a big bubble coming out of their heads saying, ‘Can we just lynch him?’” (See video of Penn talking about OWS after the jump; click here to watch the actor speak out against the Tea Party.)

'Desperate Housewives': Is the final season living up to your expectations?

desperate-housewives

Maybe it’s too soon to say this, but this season of Desperate Housewives isn’t exactly living up to my expectations. I know there have only been four episodes so far and my expectations are probably unrealistically high, but that being said, this is the final season of a series built on seven (!) years of history. That’s a lot of story to resolve and the reason I expected each episode  to be seriously buzzworthy. But that hasn’t exactly been the case so far. READ FULL STORY »

The end of the 'glass closet'? Why Zachary Quinto coming out matters to Hollywood

Zachary-Quinto

Reading Zachary Quinto’s interview with New York magazine in which he says the words “as a gay man,” twice, I was reminded about the cover story Out magazine published back in 2007 called “The Glass Closet.” It was about A-list celebrities who were openly gay in their personal lives but had yet to make any public declaration about their sexuality, and the cover featured models holding up signs on sticks with Jodie Foster and Anderson Cooper’s faces. When EW asked Foster a couple months later if she had any response to the story, she demurred. “Was that the one with the Popsicle sticks?” she said. “No, I have no response.”

Just a few months after that interview, however, Foster acknowledged her then-longtime girlfriend in a non-televised acceptance speech, thanking “my beautiful Cydney, who sticks with me through all the rotten and the bliss.” And that’s all Foster had to do. READ FULL STORY »

Ghostbusters! Power Rangers! Robots! And more costume highlights from New York Comic-Con

The best thing about going to New York Comic-Con — or any Comic-Con, for that matter — is that you have that all-too-rare, comforting feeling of not being the weirdest person in the room. In fact, no one is!

And it’s this spirit of acceptance that I tried to capture when I hit the Comic-Con floor with my handy flipcam this weekend. Take a look at the fun below. (And sincere thanks to all who participated!)  READ FULL STORY »
