'The No Doctor Cop Lawyer Show': Meet 'Adventure Time' creator Pendleton Ward!

Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time features a whole madcap array of exciting magical creatures, nobly heroic quests, in-your-face surreality, anthropomorphized candy, and totally sweet music. It’s a massive compilation of all things geeky — 8-bit videogames, high fantasy, cool hats. We’re big fans of the show, so it was a blast when we got to meet  Adventure Time creator Pendleton Ward at this weekend’s New York Comic-Con. Ward proved his Renaissance manhood by pulling a random string of words out of a hat and turning those words into an endearingly poignant character. Watch our interview below; the new episode airs tonight.  READ FULL STORY »

McDonald's launching an in-store TV channel: What should they air? (You know, besides 'Super Size Me')

In what sounds like something that could be the brain child of Liz Lemon, McDonald’s will be launching an in-store channel, called, you guessed it, the McDonald’s Channel. It will be a digital network featuring “exclusive original content” aimed at folks who like their fast-food with a side of television.

The channel will be rolled out in nearly 800 McDonald’s California locations over the next few months, with original programming that includes 20-minute “pods” such as a “McDonald’s Channel Music News” (which one can only hope will consist of playing the late, great Wesley Willis’ “Rock N’ Roll McDonald’s” or the Filet-O-Fish jingle on repeat). Here’s some other ideas for more programming the restaurant could air on their in-house entertainment channel:

–An America’s Most Wanted segment chronicling the Hamburglar. He is, after all, one of this country’s most notorious criminals. READ FULL STORY »

David Fincher tells 'Vogue' why he cast Rooney Mara in 'Dragon Tattoo' instead of Scarlett Johansson

Image Credit: Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott/Vogue

For November’s Vogue, Rooney Mara opened up about her experience working on the sure-to-be career catapulting film The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Hand-selected by auteur David Fincher to play anti-heroine Lisbeth Salander in the high-profile American adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s ultraviolent series, Mara admitted she had some reservations about taking the role. “My fear with a movie like this is the kind of exposure you get from it,” she said. “I think that can be death to an actor.” Mara, Fincher, Daniel Craig, and Dutch co-star Yorick van Wageningen (who plays sadistic case worker Nils Bjurman) shared behind-the-scenes secrets from filming the wrenching start to Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy. Which A-list star did Mara best for the role? What did Craig have to say about Fincher and Mara’s relationship? And who spent the entire day crying in a hotel room before a pivotal scene? Read on… READ FULL STORY »

'Beautiful' singer Christina Aguilera: Why calling her 'fat' is downright ugly

Back in 2009, the Internet decided former reality show darling Jessica Simpson would be its target. Spotting an unflattering photo of the singer wearing a pair of ill-fitting jeans, Internet surfers and blogs unleashed upon Simpson, deriding her for supposedly daring to gain a smidge of weight. And though the singer still struggles with the taunts — and even used them as inspiration for her short-lived Vh1 series examining appearance, The Price of Beauty — our impatient, tabloid-hungry nation has shifted its focus. Now, the Internet is spending its time slamming pop star and The Voice mentor Christina Aguilera.

The body inspection of Aguilera is nothing new — in the early 2000s, chatter spread about a possible breast enhancement surgery. But now, eyes have moved to her thighs, with bloggers calling her every synonym for “fat,” even slapping her with nicknames comparing her to Jersey Shore‘s Snooki. (Who, by the way, looks perfectly fine too, despite some unwise clothing choices.) But the labels don’t stop on the Web. On Friday’s Fashion Police, Kelly Osbourne unloaded on the singer after some harsh photos from the Michael Jackson Tribute Concert began making the rounds. Said Osbourne, “She called me fat for years. I was never that fat.” READ FULL STORY »

Jordan Knight makes surprise appearance at all-female Halloween karaoke party: Watch!

This is like a dream that I, someone whose high school yearbook was filled with classmates wishing her a lifetime of happiness with New Kids on the Block’s Jordan Knight, didn’t even know I still had. Bloggers attending the closing night event of last week’s BlissDom Canada social media conference for women in Toronto were treated to a surprise appearance by Knight, who’d been brought in by eOne Music to thank the ladies for supporting his solo album, Unfinished, which has produced two Top 40 hits in Canada. He was expected to pose for photos, but the women got more than that — he joined a large group of them onstage karaoking NKOTB’s “Step By Step” and “Hangin’ Tough.” Watch a video below, which includes a Queen of Hearts dancing up on him while a Black Swan watches at 1:14, and him admitting that he also needs to look at the lyrics at 2:35.  READ FULL STORY »

Jason Segel, Emma Stone, and Charlie Day announced as 'SNL' hosts: All is forgiven!

This weekend’s installment of Saturday Night Live, the Anna Faris-hosted Halloween episode, was a disappointment to say the least. Aside from the Digital Short interviews with Drake and the Michigan State cable access send-up “J-Pop America Fun Time Now” providing the few actual laughs during the broadcast, it was an uneven clunker. In fact, the best moment of the night wasn’t even a sketch. It was when the TV screen announced that Charlie Day would be hosting the upcoming Nov. 5 episode with musical guests Maroon 5. Shouting! Possible nudity! This episode will have everything!

But, the excitement doesn’t stop there for fellow SNL fans like me who were worried about the lackluster Faris and Ben Stiller episodes following up the season opening knock-out one-two punches from hosts Alec Baldwin and Melissa McCarthy. In addition to the always-hilarious Day getting his first go at hosting, Emma Stone will return to Studio 8H after delivering one of last season’s best episodes. READ FULL STORY »

'The Walking Dead': Did you love or loathe the season premiere?

Categories: The Walking Dead

If you’re the kind of TV addict who’s interested in how TV shows are made and unmade, then the behind-the-scenes story of The Walking Dead is almost relentlessly fascinating. The zombie-apocalypse series is based on a great graphic-novel series, but last year’s six-episode first season featured massive plot departures from the comics — despite the fact that Dead co-creator and geek demi-god Robert Kirkman is prominently involved in the TV series. Dead is an unusually lavish production, featuring gloriously grotesque undead makeup — a testament to AMC’s ongoing willingness to push the visual aesthetics of television — but that lavish production appears to have resulted in the departure of showrunner Frank Darabont. In the modern TV landscape, the notion of such an ambitious show losing its showrunner is almost unthinkable — imagine if Lost had fired Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse, or if David Simon had handed off The Wire.

After almost a full year of off-season drama and debate, The Walking Dead finally returned last night for a thirteen-episode second season. Reviews have been mixed. READ FULL STORY »
