Apple Stores closed today for Steve Jobs memorial

In honor of the late Apple founder and iconic media superhuman Steve Jobs, CEO Tim Cook announced that all Apple Stores would be closed today. A private memorial service for Jobs started this morning at Apple’s Cupertino headquarters, according to the Associated Press. The service is also being simulcast to all Apple employees across the world — though presumably not in Shenzhen — to allow employees to, in Cook’s words, “take time to remember the incredible things Steve achieved in his life and the many ways he made our world a better place.” Wouldn’t it be awesome if LSD were involved, as part of Apple’s “Broader Guy” initiative? Sigh. We miss you already, Steve.

Hugh Jackman said no to James Bond once. Will they ask him again?

Before Daniel Craig was selected to take over for Pierce Brosnan as the next James Bond, Hugh Jackman had been the media’s odds-on choice to inherit the killer tuxedo. In fact, the Aussie seemed to take great delight in fanning the flames, joking that he himself started the rumor of his playing 007 just to get his name in the mix. “I mean, who wouldn’t want to play James Bond?” he said back then. “I’ve always wanted to be 007. He’s the only British superhero.”

But in 2005, it was reported that Jackman had rejected an offer to play Bond because it might actually limit his burgeoning career. Recently, Jackman seemed to confirm the essence of those events. “I got a call from my agent saying, ‘There is some possible interest in you for Bond, are you interested?’” the Real Steel actor told the British Press Association. “At the time I wasn’t. I was about to shoot X-Men 2 and Wolverine had become this thing in my life and I didn’t want to be doing two such iconic characters at once.”

But then he added, “I think every male at some point thinks about playing James Bond so it was not right then, but it may be right if it comes back.” READ FULL STORY »

Would you endorse a president that allows the Kardashians in his household?

With a little over a year until the 2012 Presidential election, the race is already heating up. (In fact, according to Herman Cain’s calculations, it’s about as hot as a pizza oven.) Still, no matter what your political affiliation or how you plan to vote next November, you’ve gotta admit, this latest bit of information could probably help (or hurt) President Barack Obama‘s chances for re-election.

During an interview with People.com, First Lady Michelle Obama discussed, among other things, the TV watching habits and rules for daughters Sasha and Malia. When asked if any programs were off-limits, the the First Lady revealed that the president isn’t so fond of Keeping Up With the Kardashians. READ FULL STORY »

Alec Baldwin visits Occupy Wall Street. Somewhere, Jack Donaghy is crying into his morning shower scotch.

Alec Baldwin may not be running for mayor of New York City (yet), but he proved to be a true man of the people to those involved with the Occupy Wall Street movement. Last night, the 30 Rock star visited Zuccotti Park in downtown Manhattan, home of OWS, to show his support.

Baldwin tweeted late Tuesday night (after 6 p.m., and presumably not in a tux), “On my way to OWS” and later informed followers that he spent “a too brief two hours” at the site and gave a shout-out to “Aaron from Brooklyn and Sean from Winnipeg” for his “OWS tutorial.” (No word on exactly what Baldwin, Aaron and Sean talked about, but we can’t imagine he recited too many 30 Rock lines. Especially not this one: “Next stop, home ownership! I’m just kidding. The middle class is dying. You’ll be renting forever.”) Watch him talk about the role of Federal Reserve below: READ FULL STORY »

'Man Up!': A real man says 'man' a lot and other man rules learned in the 'Man Up!' premiere, man

man-up

If television has taught me anything (and, let’s be honest, it’s taught me everything), it’s that men have a lot more rules to abide by than I could have ever imagined. The dudes on Entourage were always instructing guys to “Hug it out!”; How I Met Your Mother‘s Barney urges on a weekly basis that they “Suit up!“; and now a new ABC sitcom is barking another instruction at the oppressed gender and it’s right in the title: Man Up! (And you know they mean business when there’s an exclamation point involved.) Poor men. When will the world ever cut them a break?!

So what did we learn from last night’s Man Up! pilot? READ FULL STORY »

Hope you have some lung power. That’s because the 2011 Scream Awards are airing tonight on Spike at 9:00pm. Those full-throated yells you’re likely to hear are more geeky squeals of delight when the casts of The Dark Knight Rises and Game of Thrones appear before their legions of fans to accept awards at Los Angeles’ Universal Studios. This is the kind of show where Colin Farrell can recite a poem to honoree Robert Downey Jr., then cede the floor to Darth Vader. Where Samuel L. Jackson can introduce Daniel Radcliffe for a Harry Potter tribute.

If you couldn’t have been in Tinseltown for the taping Saturday night, we’ve got the next best thing: watch the Scream Awards with EW! Log on to EW.com/viewer tonight to follow our live-blog of the event on ViEWer and chat with me and fellow sci-fi, fantasy, and comic-book fans. (Haven’t used ViEWer yet?
