Venus in Fur — which debuted Off Broadway last year — may have a new leading man (Hugh Dancy!) when it opens on the Main Stem on Nov. 8, but the comedy is keeping all its old sex appeal. “It’s a very sexy, very funny, and ultimately dangerous dance they do,” says director Walter Bobbie of Dancy’s playwright Thomas and Nina Arianda’s actress Vanda in the backstage two-hander. Intellectual Thomas has been unsuccessfully trying to cast the female lead in his adaptation of the 19th Century erotic novel Venus in Furs. Flighty Vanda is his final audition of the day — and the last woman in the world he hopes to see. See EW’s First Look below: READ FULL STORY »

Will Ferrell accepts Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. When you're down, which Ferrell flicks pick you up?

Great Odin’s Raven! Over 15 years after first breaking out on the scene with a seven-year stint on Saturday Night Live, Will Ferrell has finally been rewarded for his contribution to comedy. Last night, the television/film/web star accepted the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, the highest honor for comedic actors in the nation. Naturally, the ceremony appeared to be more fun than anything any of us did last night — after accepting his statue (a brown bust of Mark Twain), Ferrell dropped it, breaking it into pieces, then told the crowd he had chosen not to accept the award 13 times, but caved because he wanted to be seen on PBS “by hundreds of people across this country.”
Admittedly, it’s surprising that the Kennedy Center chose to honor the actor in his post-Land of the Lost and Semi-Pro days, rather than in his Anchorman-Talladega Nights heyday (though, he’s definitely rebounded in the past year with The Other Guys). Either way, he’s still in good company: Previous winners are Tina Fey, George Carlin, Steve Martin, and Richard Pryor. And, in my Anchorman-loving eyes, the actor certainly deserves to be placed in in the ranks of some of the greatest. READ FULL STORY »
Pete Seeger and Arlo Guthrie join the Occupy Wall Street protests

Folk music icons Pete Seeger and Arlo Guthrie lent their voices to the protest call of the Occupy Wall Street movement over the weekend.
According to the Associated Press, on Friday, the 92-year-old Seeger — who walked with a cane alongside his grandson, musician Tao Rodriguez Seeger, as well as fellow artists David Amram, Guy Davis, and an estimated 1,000 OWS supporters — marched from New York City’s Symphony Space to Columbus Circle while chanting their protests cries, including the unofficial OWS slogan, “We are the 99 percent!” READ FULL STORY »
Alexis Stewart's intensely uncomfortable 'Today Show' interview: Watch and squirm!
If looks could kill, anyone that tuned into The Today Show this morning probably would have been dead by breakfast. Martha Stewart‘s daughter Alexis, alongside her former collaborator and friend Jennifer Koppelman-Hutt, visited the program to promote their book Whateverland and, apparently, make everyone terribly, terribly uncomfortable. When asked if the book — in which Stewart writes, among other things, that she felt as though she had “a glue gun pointed at my head” growing up with a famous mom — is an attack on her mother, the author simply stated, “It’s not a book about my mother. It’s a book about growing up and learning to live with what happened or didn’t happen.” (For the record, on her own show, Martha referred to the book as “hilarious” and “enlightening.”)
But it wasn’t the icy responses to the questions about Martha that would have made even David Brent uncomfortable and Nina Garcia cower in fear: It was the interaction between Stewart and Koppelman-Hutt, who have “broken up” since writing the book and working on their radio show together. Some of Stewart’s gems: “If you want to punish somebody, never talking to them again is a really good method,” “Some people are very clingy and some people like to be by themselves,” and “I’m very close to my mother, but not a single other person in my family.” (In case you were wondering, Koppelman-Hutt is very close to her entire family.) If you can handle it, watch the entire awkward clip below. READ FULL STORY »
'Real Housewives of New Jersey' reunion: 'Go scratch!'

Teresa is one of those people who’s impossible to argue with. Not because she’s a great debater — her comebacks are some variation of “SHUT UP!” or “No, YOU are!” after the three seconds it takes for her to comprehend what’s been said — but she’s so dumb that any insults or valid arguments fail to have the intended effect on her. She’ll never answer a question in a satisfying way because she rarely understands the question in the first place. If I were Melissa, I’d want to throttle her for not being able to come up with anything she “regretted” saying about me. Arguing with a brick wall can be infuriating.
The Twitterverse seems to think Andy Cohen was too hard on Teresa last night, but I disagree. I think even he’s getting frustrated with how she seems to believe her own lies, and I think it’s valid that he asked for clarification on what “distanned” meant. America needed to know.
Perhaps the most jaw-dropping instance of Teresa’s stupidity and delusion: READ FULL STORY »
Enter EW's Pop Culture Pumpkin Contest!

For a few years now, my friend Jen and I have taken great pride in pumpkin creativity. It started years ago when we found ourselves hanging out at a local church pumpkin patch after a particularly crap-tastic day of high school. (Give me a break, this was Texas and, for your information, there’s no better way to make yourself feel good than going somewhere as joy-filled as a pumpkin patch.) In our frustration, we decided to buy some pumpkins to paint — for art therapy — when we spotted a sign about a contest. Not only was there a cast prize (maybe $25?), but we figured we’d be up against mostly children, so WE HAD TO WIN! Yes, this was pathetic, but hey, we’d had a bad day! READ FULL STORY »
EW's Bite of the Night for Sunday, Oct. 23, 2011
We at EW scoured the TV line-up last night to find the best quotable lines from your favorite shows. It was quite a busy Sunday, as we saw a threefer of quotable goodness from a couple of Housewives and a pair of Amazing Racers. While the reality TV entries were all about modes of transportation, it was Desperate Housewives‘ Renee Perry (Vanessa Williams) who chipped in a catty comment that took the cake… well, not literally. Read on!

Zooey Deschanel sings 'Star-Spangled Banner' at World Series. Was the performance a bomb bursting in air?
Think you escaped New Girl‘s quirky wrath, thanks to the World Series? Tough tator tots, tooter! In a scene that seemed more fit for a joke than real life (Nolan Ryan, George W. Bush, and Zooey Deschanel walk into a baseball stadium… ), New Girl darling Deschanel reminded viewers that her Fox hit is still alive — and picked up for a whole season — with a performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” at Game 4 of the World Series. Though I’ve never been a fan of Deschanel’s She & Him tunes or the apparent belief that those with big eyes and bangs lead to vocal talent, the actress still pulled off the challenging National Anthem last night. And, despite the fact that I’m admittedly hard on the actress and her new sitcom, I have to respect the bravery behind the National Anthem feat — it’s certainly not easy to sing a song performed expertly by some of the music industry’s most talented, especially when your vocals haven’t been heard by 99 percent of the population outside of a Cotton ad ( …or Elf or (500) Days. Good call, commenters!). Watch the performance after the jump, and tell us how you think Deschanel did! READ FULL STORY »
