Twitter pays its respects to Harry Potter's parents on the anniversary of their death

If you ever needed concrete proof that the Harry Potter saga and its characters (even the dead ones) will never really die, this might be it.

On Monday morning “RIP Lily and James Potter” became a trending topic on Twitter, commemorating what would mark the 30th anniversary of the death of Harry Potter’s parents.

The late couple, as we all know, died defending their infant child against He Who Must Not Be Named. Fans, who are planning a moment of Twitter silence at 3 p.m., posted messages like, “Thirty years ago today Lily and James sacrificed their lives so that their son, Harry, could live. RIP James and Lily Potter,” and “It’s 3 decades since his mother’s sacrifice saved Harry and caused the downfall of Lord Voldemort. RIP James and Lily Potter,” while another noted, “RIP James and Lily Potter, but also, happy birthday Peter Jackson! An eventful day for nerd history, Halloween is.” (Although The Roots drummer Questlove had a different outlook on the outpouring of grief on the social networking site, “”RIP James and Lily Potter” REASONS YOURE SINGLE.”)

While I’m not planning a vigil, Internet or otherwise, for James and Lily Potter (as Chandler Bing argued about the sadness over Bambi’s mom’s death, “Yes, it was very sad when the guy stopped drawing the deer“), it got me thinking about how often this sort of thing occurs with pop-culture enthusiasts. Are you planning on having a piece of anniversary cake to celebrate the nuptials (also 30 years ago!) of Luke and Laura on Nov. 17? Did you hang out by your local mall on Oct. 26 in the faint hope that the DeLorean would show up? On May 4 will you be buying little Cece Halpert something for her second birthday?

Are you mourning the death of Lily and James Potter today, PopWatchers? Which pop-culture anniversary do you acknowledge? Share in the comments section below!

    • this was cool i guess but when Skynet’s self actualized and twitter blew up

that was way better. Terminator franchise >>> potter franchise.

  • Juniper

It always bothered me that Harry’s parents looked so old in the movies. They were supposed to be 21 when they died! They made them look like they were the age they should have been if they hadn’t died! I’m a huge HP fan but that’s always irked me… That being said, RIP Lily and James. I’ll pour one out for you both tonight.

    • Jackie

I agree, Juniper! They always looked older in the movies than they should have. But then, so did the actors playing Lupin, Sirius, Pettigrew, and Snape (not that they’re not fantastic actors, but if you go by the timeline, those characters would all have been mid 30′s by the third book, and those actors look a lot older). That said, cheers to Lily and James!

      • Ariana

I thought that Lupin, Sirius, Snape Pettigrew were much closer agewise in the movies. But seriously Lily and James died and then continued aging in their afterlife? I didn’t like in movie 7.2 that they didn’t even try to make Lily and Snape look younger in the Prince’s Tale. They were 21!!! They still looked in their 40′s.

      • Ariana

I would also like to add that none of the adults looked like what I pictured them to be. James especially looked completely different from what I expected him to. He was supposed to be cool! He looked like he was probably the kind of kid who got picked on in gym class!

      • Matt

Agreed – I think they mis-cast all of the adults – they were all so old, and the actors where all theater-trained, so their readings of the lines came in stark contrast to what I pictured in my head while reading the books, as well as sounding misplaced compared to the rest of the actors in the movies. The woman who played Pierce Brosnan’s character’s wife in “Ghost Writer” (she was the head of the LA Doll House in “Dollhouse”, too) should have been McGonnagall (prob misspelled that).

      • Jackie

Well, if you think about it, Harry was one year old when James and Lily died, and James and Lily were 21. The books begin 10 years later, when Harry is 11. If his parents were alive, they would have been 31. Snape, Lupin, Sirius, and Pettigrew were all in school with James and Lily, presumably in the same year/grade, which would have made all of them 31 in ‘Sorcerer’s Stone’. None of those actors, as awesome as they are, look that young. And yes, I know, I put WAY too much thought into that.

      • Katherine

For me, I never realized that the Potters were only 21 at the time of their death until we saw the headstone at Godric’s Hollow in DH. If the producers of the movies weren’t aware of this detail until then either, then it’s understandable that the Potters don’t look the way they’re supposed to: young and vibrant.

      • AAR

Katherine- Exactly. I didn’t realize they were 21 when they died until I did the math on the headstones. I remember having to put the book down for a minute because it struck me as unfair that they died so young.

    • kate middleton

I agree. JK really should have made them older. Making them that young really didn’t add anything to the story.

      • Mary

I think it showed that by book 7, Harry was nearly the same age that his parents died to save him.

    • Acaseofgeo

It always irked me too! I’m sure they should’ve been 31, NOT 21, as listed on the grave marker. I mean, why did Harry wait so long to marry ginny and have kids? He’s late 30′s at the end and his kids are young. I also am a huge fan but have always been bothered by the extremely young age of Harry’s parents (if only due to the gravitas that accompanied them; they seemed much more mature in age than 21).

      • kater

Agreed. If they had cast really young people for James and Lily’s peers (Lupin, Sirius, Pettigrew, Snape), that would have at least been consistent. Not really sure why JKR made them so young.

      • Ru

kater – Before Bill and Fleur’s wedding, Mrs. Weasley explains that as Voldemort came into power, a lot of people rushed into weddings (a sort of “tomorrow may never come” attitude). From that perspective, it’s totally normal they were so young when they married and had Harry.

It actually makes a lot of other things make more sense. Why were Peter and Severus so easily manipulated into betraying the people they loved? Why did Sirius decide to run off and seek vengeance himself? Because they were 19, 20, 21 years old when they made these decisions. Even Harry thinks they look young and reckless in the picture of the Order of the Phoenix that Moody give him.

      • kater

Ru – that’s a good point. But it’s always bugged me that the actors playing Snape/Sirius/Pettigrew/Lupin were clearly SO much older than they were supposed to be in the books.

    • Princess Adora

I never thought about it actually, good point! I don’t really care though, nobody could have played Snape as well as Alan Rickman.

    • noam

we didn’t know their ages until book 7, did we? i don’t remember any years being mentioned until harry visits the graves in godric’s hollow, because i remember being so confused by the fact that in the book-timeline, everything happened in the 90s. but i guess that explains the weird sisters’ grunge look?

      • mpm

No. We knew their ages since the second book. Well, a harry potter fan who pays crucial attention should have known everyone’s ages and timeline by the second book. Nearly Headless Nick’s deathday party was celebrating 500 years of death and his cake said he died in 1492. From that piece of info, many people had already knew everything about the timeline of harry potter. The tombstones in DH only made it crystal clear to others who missed the info in book 2.

      • emka

“Nearly Headless Nick’s deathday party was celebrating 500 years of death and his cake said he died in 1492. From that piece of info, many people had already knew everything about the timeline of harry potter.”

Yes, since second book we know timeline of HP, bud we don`t know anything about his parents age! They can be 21 or 27… We know only that Harry was born in 1980 – so Lily or James can born in 1960, 1955… We know their age since 7th book.

  • jpratm

but twilight fools get their hands in cement.

    • Liz Lemon

Don’t EVEN get me started on this. Why to make this ceremony completely irrelevant now. Next people to get their hands immortalized will be the Kardashians.

      • Liz Lemon

I meant Way not Why, but I’m so annoyed that I can’t even spell.

  • Meli

Maybe the HP fans can focus less on the anniversary of Lily and James Potter’s death and focus some of their ire on Ms. Rowling and the Pottermore site for failing to live up to their promise of making the site public by today, and for now issuing a ‘well now we don’t know when we’re going to be public’ statement on their blog.

    • Liz Lemon

Whatevs. They’re not the first to miss a deadline. Nor will they be the last.

  • Ava

I don’t drink normally, but every year on 10/31 I break out a beer in honor of James and Lily. I make my husband join me. He thinks it’s silly, I think Harry Potter is as much a part of my family as my husband is. Harry and I grew up together. So yes, each year on Hallowe’en I raise my glass to the parents who gave their lives to protect Harry Potter! Crazy as it may be.

    • kater

I’m a big HP fan….but Harry is as much a part of your family as your husband is? Really? Hopefully that’s hyperbole.

  • amy

    UH!!!! Reality Check!!!!!

  • Tina

I think its about realizing the impact of a cultural phenomenon and the message behind it.

The crash of Oceanic flight 815… hello, fellow Lostie!

      • Acaseofgeo

After which we had to endure SIX years of labrynthine story tellin just to find out they were ALL DEAD all along and in purgatory. Ugh. NOT what the creators promised at the beginning.

      • Ummm

        Acaseofgeo = wrong.

      • Mike

Here we go again. You could not be more wrong about what the end of the show/entire show was about. I’m sure this will end up with me getting way too into this once again but I’ll start briefly by saying. Flash Sideways = place where all the characters reunite after their deaths (regardless of when each death happened). This was only in season 6. Everything on the Island, all of the flashbacks all of the flashforwards, all of the time travel….HAPPENED when they were alive. And seriously, where did you think the ghostly visions were coming from when they were alive? Maybe some other plane of existence after they MOVED ON? Woaaa…you mean they answered a question in the final moments of the show and no one got it? Bazinga.

      • adam

Lol @Acaseofgeo…I didn’t know that people were stupid enough to STILL think they were dead the whole time.

      • joe

haha i love how every single time lost is even mentioned it still brings out the same debate of the ending with one person sh*tting on it and others either agreeing or calling the other person stupid for not getting it. i’m on the loved it side but i still find it funny. at this point i think both sides should agree to disagree because trying to convince the other side will always prove futile. even with basic points to the finale.

      • Mike

We can agree to disagree with opinions of the finale being good or bad, but I will absolutely not agree to disagree about the “BASIC POINTS” of the finale. There is a chance that Acaseofgeo really does get the ending and is just trying to instigate something. But joke or not, if someone is going to bring up the whole “they were dead the whole time” comment, I’m always going to respond to it. Someone out there still believes that and need to be corrected! :-)

      • Mike

        “needs”

      • Acaseofgeo

Well Mike, thanx for that explanation but even that makes almost no sense whatsoever and I still feel insulted for all the time I spent on that show.

      • Mike

Well like I said, it was a “brief” explanation. lol If you want to do some in depth reading you can always go to my blog. I have a recap of the finale and some commentary afterwards. But just keep in mind…I was a big fan of the show. lol lostaddictsblog dot com.

    • Mike

      Preach on Nick!

    • Melissa in CA

Another Lostie here! I’ll drink a toast (MacCutcheon of course) to the ones that got off the island 108 days later. :)

    • Liz Lemon

      R.I.P. LOST!!! :(

  • Shannon

    Hahaha. That’s amazing.

  • kate middleton

Cece Halpert? HA. You’re kidding, right?

  • Melissa in CA

Aww! That almost makes me want to join Twitter. But not quite.

  • ken in STL

So that means that Harry Potter is… 30???

    • JMB in FL

      Nope… 31. lol

This whole thing is silly, and I say that as a devoted HP fan. C’mon, people.

      • Liz Lemon

No, it’s not. It’s a significant date in the series. In every book, something big happened on Halloween.

    • LK

semi-correct! Harry was born in 1980, which would make him 31!

  • vinxy

O always remember Harry’s birthday but didn’t remember parents death date but now I think about I will watch movie 1 today to commemorate.

  • JJ

I REALLY dislike James, so I ain’t drinking for him. Nor for Lily that dang ginger;)

    • @JJ

You must be a Snape fan?

  • bobby
