Eddie Murphy lowers Oscar expectations, aims to be 'worst host ever'

Eddie Murphy joked to Entertainment Tonight that he intends to be the worst Oscar host in history. “It’s just going to be [me] introducing people and looking straight on [the camera],” said Murphy. “And I’m going to wear a powdered sky-blue tuxedo, and at the end of the evening, I’m going to urinate on myself in front of a billion people. Just letting you know, the worst host ever.”

Funny. Ish. But what was more revealing during a promotional interview for Tower Heist — alongside Ben Stiller, producer Brian Grazer, and director and Oscar producer Bret Ratner — was Murphy’s revelation that hosting the Oscars was his idea. “The conversation came up about who would host and [Ratner] was saying different names,” recalled Murphy. “And I was like, you know, if I hosted that show, it would probably get nice little chatter for our movie before the movie came out — that I was hosting the Oscars. … And that’s kind of how it happened.” Watch the clip below.

Has Murphy sufficiently lowered expectations, as Stiller suggested? And should we count on Murphy co-opting other gags from Dumb & Dumber on Oscar night? (Jeff Daniels’ Harry Dunne not only had great fashion sense, but he also had some bathroom issues.)

I think Eddie’s gonna be hillarious!

    • Luis

If he puts some effort into it, it could be fantastic. I hope he takes it seriously enough to practice.

      • CPSmith

If he doesn’t resort to crude humor or let the standard Academy Award writer-hacks (Bruce Velanch, etc.) pen his material, he could be really good.

      • Stevex

If Eddie could figure out how to snap his fingers and magically turn into Neil Patrick Harris, that would make for a decent Oscar telecast.

      • hf

Crude humor would be fine by me, but please don’t put on any latex fat suits, I’ve seen more than enough of that Eddie.

    • lisa g.

His pretend reverse psychology won’t work! He better knock it out the ballpark! Lord knows he has enough time to come up with some good stuff. A consult with Chris Rock would be good.

      • hf

Love Chris Rock, but judging by Rock’s own Oscar hosting gig, he’s the last guy Eddie should consult.

      • Uh

I loved Chris Rock hosting of the Oscars he was funny!

      • Ron. M.

Since when is Chris Rock funny?

      • lisa g.

Chris at his worst is better than most at their best!

  • Mac

I hope he does a great job. I think he should practice his routine by doing several comedy gigs, maybe dropping by a comedy club unannounced, that way he be on his game.

    • Demond

I would love to see Eddie do stand up again. He was so funny back in the 80s.He should return to his roots.Raw and Delirious are classics.I think the movies he has made since the mid 90s have been terrible except a few.I just want Eddie Murphy to be funny again.

    • Jackie

As long as Anne Hatheway isn’t involved, it should be great.

  • Disappointed

Eddy Murphy for Randall Flagg for the Stand movie.

    • Toni

That is … not the worst idea.

  • Under

If you really want to be the worst host ever, just look at Chris Rock and David Lettermans performance. In fact why don;t he just invite Three 6 Mafia back and do an encore of “Its Hard out here for a Pimp”

    • Lola

      …Oprah…Uma… Hehehe

  • kim in kentucky

Won’t be a bit surprise if he is – and if not, prob tie with Rock and Letterman

    • Jeff

You mean actually poke fun at the celebs like, Rock, Letterman, Steve Martin and Jon Stewart? I hated how actually entertaining those shows we’re. Enjoying myself during the Oscars does suck.

      • Uh

Yeah Rock and Jon were great, so was Ellen.

      • Annie Hall

No, Rock was mean – there’s a difference between mean and poking fun – he took it way too many steps way too many times during the show (I did like Steve Martin, Ellen and Jon was okay)

  • Harold Ford Jr.

Brother Ed needs a hit and this Tower flick looks a little corny. His tough guy black act is tired, he was doing this stuff back on SNL back in the 80’s. However, he’s still Eddie, which means he’s still funny. When he’s in his element, he’s uproarious. Problem is, he’s getting older and directors and producers don’t know how to use his talent in this youth oriented market. Good luck hosting the Oscars, bruh! You’re gonna need it….

  • @Lisa

Consult with Chris Rock? Are you serious? Eddie was making people laugh before Chris was even born! You dont know what you’re talking about!

    • fancypants

Eddie Murphy is only 4 years older than Chris Rock so your comment doesn’t make any sense.

      • Charlie Harper’s Ghost

Ok, so, where was Chris Rock when Eddie was doing his thing on SNL and Delirious? At what point did Chris Rock EVER have a hit movie? Let’s not forget the true comedic gems Eddie has brought us:

        1. Trading Places
        2. 48-Hours
        3. Beverly Hills Cop
        4. Coming to America
        5. Bowfinger

I like C-Rock. But, let’s not ever compare the two…

  • @@Lisa

    Agreed!

  • hlynn

Eddie hasn’t done anything remotely hilarious since the 80’s with his stand up routines and Beverly Hills Cop/48 Hours days. Would LOVE to see him hit it out of the ballpark at the Oscars! So tired of all the crap he has been doing the past 20+ years. I miss the old Eddie from Saturday Night Live. Here’s hoping for a come back for him! GO EDDIE!!

  • Ron. M.

I think Eddie Murphy will be good for the Oscars, he will put some humor into them for a change

  • Toni

I think Eddie Murphy has the chance to be a really good host. He’s genuinely funny off-the-cuff; it’s his weird hammy movie scripts that get him in trouble. But riffing on the Oscars as he goes? It has the potential to really work. Of course, it has the potential to flame out, too.

  • Manny

As long as Bruce Villanch is the head writer, the show is a train wreck. Doesn’t matter who’s hosting.

    • Q.H.

      Ding.

  • Johnny Carson’s Ghost

While I think Eddie Murphy is a good choice. He’s professional, he’s experienced on stage, and he’s not an A-hole. By the way, I think most people acknowledge (correctly) that David Letterman was the worst. What a train wreck.

    • Jeff

Worse than last year? Doubt it.

  • Murphy fan.

The monologue will be funny. Hopes he wears a shiny red leather tuxedo. And sings the Neutron Dance.

  • Arnel pineda

Just repeat “I ain’t falling for no banana in my tailpipe” for 3 hours and all will be well
